Beta Steam Keys & Prototype Access

Hi everyone!

We're thrilled to announce that beta backers should now have access not only to their steam keys, but also to the last version of the prototype! Remember, this version of the prototype is only available to our backers.

If you have already redeemed your key, you can log into your Humble Bundle account and retrieve the steam key from there, at

If you lost your HumbleBundle key, you can use the key re-sender ( to get it back.

We know it's a convoluted process, but it's about the only way to move forward from this point. Everything should be much smoother from here on in. You can also contact us at if you run into any problems along the way.

Remember, we don't only update here! In fact, most of our updates, in the form of the weekly blog, appear over at and we have a very active community as well over at

Thank you all once again for your amazing support and for sticking with us throughout this process! It's people like you that make us happy to deal with the hard stuff!

I have a nice collection on and Castle Story would make me happy, if it was there. Steam is just big no no for me.

When will a DRM-free version be released?

Every time I try to create account it's "under maintenance"

and yes, i'm on the "prototype.castlestory" address

way to run a company guys

    4. Michel Rowinski on April 15, 2013

Since I downloaded from Humble and have not connected it to steam I wonder if I will get the updates when they are released?

    5. ThomasN on April 9, 2013

Guys, forget about this confusing stuff. I have never made any accound and it goes like this:
I just had to create any humblebundle account, and go to and enter the mail address I use in my KS. A mail from humblebundle is then sent to me with the download links.

@Tyler, try to figure out what your facebook email is and put that into humble bundle's key resender... good luck.

    9. Tyler Gopen on March 28, 2013

Anyone have a suggestion for how I can get my prototype? I bought the $15 package, and humblebundle isn't recognizing my kickstarter email address (possibly because I am logged in via Facebook?).

Just played the prototype for about 2 hours..
      This game is fracking awesome!
I love the looks, the gameplay, even the controls (after you get used to it, they are pretty straight forward).

I started on prototype island maybe a dozen times, trying new discovered stuff :)
Thanks for making such a great game...

Had some issues with my bricktons stop working in a mine 3x3 with 4 workers after 1 level down or smth,
but im pretty sure youll figure that out.

      Thanks for the good work!
      For motivational purpose only:…

I have been unable to log in since getting my beta key. I am registered on the Castlestoryonline site and using the same credentials as that on Steam, but it keeps telling me "invalid username or password." Not sure what to do next.

    12. Ahzreal on March 23, 2013

Just let a new pledge level of our kickstarter into the game? BETTER GO TO A CONVENTION, GUYS.

    14. Skamandros on March 23, 2013

I've tried hard to figure out how to get the game, but it didn't work. I have created a castle story and a humble bundle account, but I have no idea what to do next.

Thanks for the hug at PAX East!

    16. Scott Everts on March 22, 2013

Thanks Ryan, finally got into the game. It's annoying to have to re-log into the game each time but at least I got it to work. Hopefully the release version will ditch the login or at least remember it.

      I had the same problem.

      1. go to
      2. enter your email
      3. you should receive an email with a link to "register" an account

here where it get tricky, as a few minutes ago that link goes to

IF THAT LINK IS a 404

prepend that *exact* link with in the browser and it should take you to the right page.

      ** worked for me

    19. Scott Everts on March 21, 2013

I sent an email last night trying to figure out how to figure out what it wants to log in and play. Still no response. I'm assuming the are overwhelmed with support questions. What I don't understand is it asks you to go to their website to setup an account which I did but won't recognize that account at all. Some people seem to be able to play it, not sure what I'm doing wrong. I got the first bit to work by getting my Steam code. I don't think I'm an idiot but maybe I am! :)

Just got my beta key and activated on Steam. If this is a convoluted process, then I think you guys will be fine! Can't wait to get home and test out the game, looks awesome!

"Remember, we don't only update here!"
At least Sauro has humour. 6 months and 13 updates on Kickstarter of which 6 during the KS. And then those are mostly links to their site. Wish they would take some example of KS's/dev's like The Banner Saga (still the perfect example for a KS) and Republique. Which are also small studio's and can manage the same. (*points at silly comment in comment section*

      >> Damn, isn't one level of DRM enough? I hate games that require me to jump through a bunch of hoops just to play them. That's why I don't buy EA, Ubisoft, or Kalypso games that require custom login apps and special accounts just so you can play their games. Sorry but this is a big pet peeve of mine.

I agree with this fully. I downloaded these files through Steam and am currently logged in to Steam. That's the limit to how much DRM I am happy with.

    24. Scott Everts on March 21, 2013

So I finally got the Steam key and got the game installed. Was so excited to finally try it! Then I got it running and slapped with a login screen!! What?? Another DRM? So go to the castle story website, create an account. Try using this account to play the game and says its not valid!!

For those asking about their second beta key, you can find it in the Humble Bundle Page if you requested your keys. There is a little line that doesn't have the castle story logo next to it or anything, but it says Castle Story Beta (Gift). However, after jumping to the official forums and back to here I've noticed that no one has been able to figure out how to create an account for the person that you are giving an extra key to. Any help on this, from anyone?

    26. ThomasN on March 20, 2013

Deduction shows we should make an account on
I do that, and get a mail containing "feel free to go reserve your username at the Registration Page". So it shows my mail client. If I open the actual mail file (mime parts and all) I see there is actually "a href="…" Registration Page /a" link it it. Which after quoted-printable-decoding I did not get to work. Can you please just send us the humble key?

I'm having the same issue as an earlier backer: I only show the prototype, no beta. I tried resending the keys (which fixed the issue for him) but I still only have the prototype available. Any thoughts/suggestions/help?

    28. Dan McDaniel on March 20, 2013

Please send the updated keys to Thanks.

    29. Dan McDaniel on March 20, 2013

Hi, so, my keys are currently being sent to an e-mail address I do not have access to. When I tell the humble key resender to send it again, it does not redirect to the proper e-mail address as it should. Therefore my two beta backer keys are stuck in limbo. I would very much appreciate it if you would update the address there.

    30. killx_den on March 20, 2013

Will there be a Linux binary soon?

Maybe I ll try the win version at the weekend via wine in the meantime.

    31. Aaron Polcare on March 20, 2013

I'm running the prototype on Mac for the first time, and I get all the way in to the main menu of the game and under the choices for "new game" there's no icon for "new island" to click. Just the words new island at the bottom of the box. So I'm stuck hanging out in the main menu unless I'm missing something I should have done.

    32. Sauropod Studio Creator on March 20, 2013

actually the game stay DRM free no matter what, you don't need steam to launch or play the game. You can still download the game directly from humble but the latest version will be updated via steam. But once it's downloaded you still can close steam and open up the game if you want to.
Steam offer the choice to add the DRM or not. We decided to not build our game with steam's DRM.

      thanks for the encouragements :)

    33. Cody Orr on March 20, 2013

I think Sebastian means Steam. Usually I hate Steam but for such a small studio and team I, myself, am OK with it. It's not like you were offering it DRM free anyway. No complaints from me. With just one update you've made the game playable in my opinion. Keep up the great work Sauropod Studio!

For anyone who, like me, uses the Grid View I've made quick custom banner to use until the official one is out. :P
Just go to grid view and right click->set custom image.

    35. Rand Chua TL on March 20, 2013

The game file lucky is small only 64.5 MB. easy to dl.

    36. Sauropod Studio Creator on March 20, 2013

      Who talked about DRM?
Because less than 8% of all our backers didn't redeemed their humblebundle key.

Really? Is this game going to be locked behind DRM?
I hope this is only for the beta and prototype...

    38. Chirpy on March 20, 2013

What do we do if we chose an option where you receive 2 keys? how do we go about obtaining the second key?

    39. Hadrien Debris on March 20, 2013

I tried the prototype under Wine and it works, even if with poor performance (I'll try on my desktop even if I have to try it under wine since I don't have windows...). Anyway, when you plan to release e linux binary?

Awesome! Been busy lately, thanks for the update here!

    45. Guard13007 on March 20, 2013

Yes! :D Thank you so much! I was kinda sad I couldn't afford to get the prototype but I was happy to support for the beta and YES. ^^ BETA TIME. :D

    46. Greg on March 20, 2013

Love the decision to release the prototype at this stage, thanks for that! Also hopelessly lost trying to control these plump little workers. It seems they occasionally get "paused" and no amount of clicking and right-clicking has got them working again. Any clues?

    47. Julia on March 20, 2013

Aha, update. I returned to the "You've already reserved your name!" page and discovered that if I clicked on Home, I got the option to enter my email address to have my account name re-sent to me. Huzzah!

    48. Julia on March 20, 2013

I'm another one who doesn't remember if/how I got my account. The old link I dug up in email said I already registered a name, but I don't seem to have a confirmation email with what that name is. How do I find that out?

    49. Adam Cooper on March 19, 2013

Is the Beta available to all backers? Plus, I've never heard of this HumbleBundle, what is it?
