About

Hey there! Thanks for visiting our Kickstarter campaign in support of our 10th season.

For the past ten years, Choral Chameleon has developed a reputation for playing around with the norms of the choral world – everything from culture of our rehearsals, to the venues we perform in and the combination of music that we’ll perform right next to each other. We’ve commissioned over 140 original compositions and arrangements in this past decade and we also run an Educational Institute every summer for composers and conductors. We've collaborated with the likes of MacArthur Grant winner Taylor Mac, Sxip Shirey, Caroline Polachek, and this year we're proud to be named the first vocal ensemble in residence at National Sawdust, a world renowned hub of new music activity in Brooklyn. We are a registered 501c3 nonprofit, and your support will be tax deductible.

For our 10th anniversary, we're planning a series of concerts that shines a light on one of our core values:

Behind every voice is a human being.

Why is that important? Because you can hear it in the sound.

Choral Chameleon’s audience knows us for the warmth and intimacy they encounter in our performances alongside our great musicianship, a touch of humanity that is sometimes lacking in new music presentations.

As more and more choirs today strive to sound distant and other-wordly at a time when people are alienated and divided, we believe we need to be more present, more tactile and more communicative when we ask an audience to come out and see us live.

This is why we’ve programmed MIND/BODY/SPIRIT, a series totally dedicated to this holistic insight.

The three-part series will invite audiences to get even closer to our singers, to explore their internal life in three separate concert programs:

The Spirit: Their formative experiences
The Body: The messy stuff
The Mind: The work behind the musicianship

We have two performing groups with in our organization that will be singing:
The Ensemble – Twelve professional voices
The Chorus – Over forty adventurous volunteer singers

While ticket revenues, artist stipend from our National Sawdust Residency and a generous grant from The Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of New York will take us a good way there; we need your help to fully realize the vision of this exceptional Series!

Here are our details for each concert:

SPIRIT (FEBRUARY 2 + 4 2018): Spirit will be performed by the Ensemble at Williamsburg Brooklyn’s artist-incubator space, National Sawdust as part of their ‘Classical Sundays’ series, for which we are a Group-in-Residence this year.

Each singer will be co-curating the program with a choice of piece that speaks to their formation as a person, accompanied by a visual collage of memories that will be projected for the audience.

There will also be a world premiere commission by composer Edward Thompson.

Your help will enable us to specifically:

  • pay our professional singers
  • hire a projection-artist to bring the visual storytelling to life in an immersive way
  • commission a new work by one of our favorite composers to showcase his work in front of a totally new audience
  • provide two opportunities for National Sawdust’s audience to experience the program

BODY (APRIL 19 + 20 2018): Body is the choral-theater sandwich-filling of the series! It will be on a totally different scale to our intimate events at National Sawdust.

This unique choral/dance production will be performed by our adventurous Chorus at the Irondale Center - a large theatre space in Fort Greene.

The program will be devised over a series of weeks via collaboration with a very special choreographer, Coco Karol. Coco’s groundbreaking exploratory work with palliative care professionals incorporates a technique known as ‘movement interviews’; a therapeutic process of talking to subjects while moving together which fosters deeper human connection. We are excited for our singers to help shape the story of this program via this physical dialog.

The musical centerpiece of the program is Vince Peterson’s 20-minute work ‘I Sing The Body Electric’: set to Walt Whitman’s poetry, written for accompaniment of brass quintet, contrabass and percussion.

Your help will enable us to:

  • pay for the artistic staff to prepare our chorus in weekly rehearsals
  • hire the amazing and atmospheric space, The Irondale Center, in which our choral-theater concept will truly come to life
  • hire the production staff necessary to coordinate this theatrical experience and work with an exceptional choreographer who shares our goal of creating work that fosters human connection
  • hire the professional instrumental musicians

MIND: The Ensemble will return to National Sawdust’s ‘Classical Sundays’ Series with a program that explores how a musician’s mind works, from their own perspective, about what it takes to surrender to music and to become one’s full musical self.

At the center: Adam Ward's exquisite choral setting of texts from the famed book "Gradus ad Parnassum" for choir and cello, which explores the relationship between trusted teacher and eager pupil.

In this program we will acknowledge our deep commissioning history and our commitment to living composers.

We’ll be featuring music by each of our four Composers-in-Residence to date: Jeffrey Parola, Joseph Gregorio, Adam Ward and Rex Isenberg and there will be four World Premieres from three of them, plus an additional commission from Joseph Stilwell.

Your help will enable us to:

  • Pay our professional singers who will do an amazing job with very challenging music
  • Hire the cellist we need for Adam Ward’s piece
  • Showcase the quality and significance of the commissions our organization has brought into the world and expose them to a new audience
  • Give four World Premieres of composers whose work has not yet been performed at an important venue for music discovery, National Sawdust

Risks and challenges

We have 9 seasons under our belt of bringing all of our planned live choral experiences to fruition, and 7 seasons of running our Annual Summer Institute. As long as we have our funds raised there is no significant risk of our season not happening.
