Artists travel to Chile to celebrate the legends and spirituality of its Native Americans and translate it into beautiful works of art
We thank you in advance as we hope that you will help us celebrate the spirituality and iconography of the Mapuche, Chile's Native Americans!
During our month-long trip to Chile we hope to glean hands-on knowledge of the Mapuche’s spirituality, legends and iconography (their cosmology) and translate it into beautiful and informative works of art.
Be a part of this ARTventure!
There are SO many ways you can help us demonstrate the power of art to unleash imagination, break down barriers, and connect people in this world where we too often find so much division and prejudice-help us shine the light on the essence of the Mapuche people!
I made the painting below. La Semilla ( 7 x 9 feet oil on canvas)~depicting indigenous people from North to South America. I have always been interested in the cosmoglogy of people everywhere. ~Claudia
I have always been interested in the iconography of indigenous people in the Americas. Until now, most of my work has been focused on the imagery from Mexico. The piece below is encaustic on wood, titled: Aztec Sun (Tonalpohualli)~Sergio
Claudia & Sergio: Partners in love, life and art: We met in Mexico where Claudia had been invited to exhibit in a museum show, and Sergio was one of the artists in charge of the exhibit. One of the first things we realized when we met is that although our art is quite different, we are both interested in the same subject matter: people, their culture, history and spiritual beliefs.
It is one of our dreams to be able to visit countries throughout the Americas, learn from the Indigenous people there, and work with the imagery we find so fascinatingly beautiful. We are excited to begin our dream in Claudia's Chile!
We want to engage the viewer in learning through our art about what shapes the lives of these people who too often are stereotyped in the media. The Mapuche tend to be either martyrized in the international press because of the exploitation of ancestral lands, or portrayed as renegade rebels in the Chilean press as the media's focus is on the minority who engage in violent conflict with authorities.
We seek to learn about the essence of their culture and cosmovision: spirituality/religion, legends and iconography and thus via our art to present Mapuche culture as represented through their link to their ancestors, deities, symbolic representation of their land, history and society.
We want to create art that inspires rather than divides.
Your support for this project will help us create fabulous paintings to share the beauty of the Mapuche and help us create bridges between cultures. When we embrace humanity by learning about others with whom we share this world~ we help the river of love, peace, and illumination to flow across the arid landscape of our world!
The result shall be a dynamic body of work with the vitality and intrigue of the infinite infused with the symbols, hues and energy of the Mapuche.
What will the money go towards?
Through kickstarter we are seeking to raise $3,500 towards our overall budget of $7,000 for the project. The money raised here will fund:
~Materials and supplies; rental for one month's duration in Santiago, Chile; food and other necessities while we are in Chile; shipping of the work back home to Washington DC. Any extra money will go towards promoting the exhibit, transportation of the work for the various presentations and exhibition opportunities associated with this body of work, more materials to create more work, . We plan to make large paintings, several smaller drawings and paintings... and who knows ...whatever else our hearts get inspired to do!
What about those rewards?
While we are in Chile and in the studio working on our Mapuche inspired work we want you to be part of our process! We will be keeping a backers-only facebook group, and livestreaming as well as taping our ARTventures in Chile as well as in our home studio. Kickstarter rewards include prints, studies, watercolor drawings, mixed media art, oil on canvas pieces and encaustics.-- plus studio visits, and a VIP opening reception~a pARTy~ to experience the art with a select cast of our muses (this means YOU) , our wonderful supporters!
Some of the rewards include pieces from Claudia's mixed media Butterfly series (more images below, 8 of these are available):
Some include pieces from our encaustic series (more images below and on our website, 13 of these are availble as rewads):
Here is the oil on canvas for our Ceviche Reward (it is also framed as the two pieces above, handmade wood, handpainted frame by Sergio):
When will the exhibit take place?Throughout 2013. This is why rewards from our Mapuche collection will not be available until June 2013.
What mediums will you work in?
While in Chile we plan to work primarily on paper. We will use pencils, ink, acrylics, oils and collage. Once back in the USA, we will work on larger pieces on canvas and wood, as well as encaustics with found objects.
What will your work look like?
We are not sure...but you KNOW it will be AWEsome! You can peruse Claudia and Sergio's websites and see our other work to get a better idea...but most of Sergio's work will be encaustic (like the two on this page) and Claudia's will be figurative and we expect mixed media pieces like the one below (of course, inspired by Mapuche cosmology):
How often will you livestream?
Hopefully weekly or more often while in Chile, and at least every other week, for the months during which we are working in our studio once back in the USA.
What does "shipping fees required" mean?
Since we are creating paintings on wood panel, they get heavy. Shipping domestically and especially internationally is very costly. If you're interested in these rewards and concerned about shipping costs, message me with your location and preferred shipping method, and we will look at giving you a price estimate.
Domestic shipping costs are included in pledge amounts, international pledges are welcome but only for the smaller rewards and additional shipping is noted when required.
May I bring a friend to the pARTy?
You are welcome to bring +1 friend! If you are not in the area you are welcome to transfer your invite and +1 to a local friend. Here is a YouTube video from one of our annual pARTies in the studio, where you can also peruse some of our work.
Join us in our effort! We appreciate ALL your support!

Once the project is funded, we will send the postcards and prints out as soon as we can print them. Prints on block will take longer and to err on the safe side,we estimate that you will receive the postcards in July and prints by August/September (but most likely it will be sooner).

Shipping will depend on where you reside and we will notify you as soon as we get information/addresses via kickstarter about the cost. The average cost within the USA is usually $3.- for smaller pieces and around $7.- for larger pieces.
It is more complicated for internationally as it depends greatly on where it is going to- it is for example cheaper to ship art to Australia for us than to Italy), cheaper to Mexico than Canada.
