Manoa Otaku Experience (M.O.E.) is a anime/cosplay based expo created and organized by the Registered Independent student Organization(RIO): The Anime Manga Society at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
The members of the Anime Manga Society (AMS) enjoy anime, manga, and the cosplay culture here in Hawaii and wish to hold an event that can bring together the community.
Hawaii is the perfect place for an anime convention. Beautiful weather, white sandy beaches, and winds that make the palm trees sway. Yet there are very few anime conventions held here. We want to change that.
The AMS hopes that M.O.E. will become an events that everyone will look forward to attending every year.
What will M.O.E. have?
We will have:
Cosplay Contests: Watch or enter in your best cosplay and see how it fairs against the competition.
Cosplay Fashion Show: Watch cosplay designers show off their best cosplay.
Cosplay Chess: Have you ever felt like being part of a live chess game? Have you ever wanted to be a bishop, rook, or knight, and move in steps to take the king? Well with Cosplay Chess, you can. Dress up as your favorite anime/manga character and have a place on the board. It's not quite like wizards chess, but it's still just as fun!
Karaoke Contest: Do you have a beautiful sing voice? Would you like to share you talents with everyone? Do you like to watch people sing? At the Karaoke Contest you can do just that. Compete against other talented singers and sing anything from your favorite J-pop to metal ballads.
Card Game Tournaments: The other contests are not what you looking for? Feel like dusting off the old Magic, Yugioh, or Vanguard deck? We will have a table top gaming room available for you to challenge others to see how your deck holds up in the current tournament format.
Video Game Room: A part of every great event is having a video game room and beating all contenders in various fighting games. Don't miss out on all that action.
AMV Contest: Think you got some editing skills? Enter your best AMV and show off how good the skills are.
Where will this be held?
As this will be our first year, we will be hosting M.O.E. on our home campus the beautiful the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Hosting M.O.E. here will give us a nice centralized landmark location, it has ample parking for those with vehicles, and it is also along a major bus route for those without personal transportation.
We have a special Idea in mind for all of our Kickstarter supporters.
For everyone who pre-orders a pass on Kickstarter, not only do you helps us with a nice head count, and generous donation. we intend to have special armbands made as Entry Passes:
This is just a special thank you for helping make this event awesome. *please note final product may look different.*
Target Goal & Stretch Goals
Being a Registered Independent student Organization, AMS has a few advantages that allows us to operate on the University campus. These advantages allow us to plan M.O.E. with such a small funding goal of $2000.
1) Low cost for room rentals. For a one (1) day Saturday event it will cost us roughly $1000 for all the rooms we need to hold this event.
2) Food. The University has a great in-house catering service for big events and meetings.
3) Location. The University of Hawaii at Manoa is a well known location. It has a lot of accessible parking, and security
Thus keeping the cost relatively low, while maximizing the available resources.
We have thought about expanding M.O.E. into a two (2) day Saturday and Sunday event, but the after-hour fees associated with the room rentals for such an event are pretty big (even with the student discount)
For a 2 day event we would need over $9000 to cover the after-hour fees. Which brings us to our stretch goals.
Stretch Goal A) $5,000: Commemorative T-shirt for our (Kickstarter Backer)'s. This is a small stretch goal in the event we make over the original amount, but less than enough for Stretch Goal B.
Stretch Goal B) $15,000: 2 days (Saturday & Sunday) in January 2014. This will help us reserve the rooms for both days, and have a commemorative t-shirt available for everyone.
Stretch Goal C) $26,000: 2 days during the winter season (Jan), and 1 day in the summer (some time between Jun-Aug)
Stretch Goal D) $32,000: 2 & 2; 2 days as a winter event, and 2 days as a summer event
Stretch Goal E) $100,000+: If we reach this, it would be Amazing. this would be beyond anything we ever imagined. If by some how we do make it this far, and if there is support for it. The 2015 winter event will be on New Years Eve/Day.
Imagine having an anime convention/ expo in a hotel and staying up to count down to the new year and then spending the rest of the time on the beach.
Risks and challenges
With every project there are always some risks
1) Room Reservations. Our main risk would be that we didn't reserve the rooms early enough and we would have to share the area with others. We will work our hardest to reserve a venue that would be necessary for us to use.
2) Reaching maximum capacity. In the event that that happens we will either limit the number of attendees or search for a new venue that could accommodate us..
All of the funding and support we receive will go solely toward this event, rest assured that if we hit a stretch goal, we will work hard to make it happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
