The Children of Litha Tarot Deck

So, who the Heck am I!?

Hi! My name is Alexandria Huntington, and I am the creator of The Children of Litha Tarot. I am a twenty-five year old artist and illustrator based in southern California, living with my wonderful partner, our two cats, and a baby on the way! The Children of Litha Tarot has been a project three years in the making, and a personal dream of mine for even longer. Although I received my degree in sequential art (a fancy academic phrase for comic illustration!), I am also a practicing pagan and have always been fascinated by the Tarot. After building up my own substantial collection of decks, I decided to create one of my very own! The completion of this deck was a slow, and arduous process. But despite all of the struggle (and indeed, perhaps because of them), its creation has been a truly transformative, and eye-opening journey for me, both as an artist, and as a person. Having just graduated from art school, I began this project during an exciting, chaotic, and honestly quite terrifying time in my life. Every hope, fear, and ambition I held for the future was poured into this deck. Now that it's finally finished, it's astounding to think how much has changed since it began. After struggling to make a home for me and my partner in Seattle, I moved back in with my parents, working day in and day out as a freelance illustrator. What I thought were going to be major career opportunities fell through, and I was left feeling dejected, and hopeless. Indeed, during these most difficult times, it was my passion for this project that got me through. With the designing of each card, I had to search deep within myself for meaning and purpose, and with each illustration I found myself learning more and more about who I was as a person and where my true values lie. I always used Tarot as a tool for mediation and self reflection, but now that I was making my own deck I had a whole new appreciation for the art of Tarot Reading. Now that it's finally done, my boyfriend and I have moved into our own place. I've been blessed with extraordinary opportunities and actually get to use my degree and illustrate comics for a living! This deck has seen me through my highs and lows, and as I enter yet another exciting stage of my own journey, I'd love nothing more than to share its wisdom with you.

 About the Deck

Each of these cards has been lovingly and painstakingly hand illustrated by me. Made specifically for Tarot, and no other purpose, each card is a product of specialized mediation, manifestation, and magick. The deck includes 78 cards which are re-imaginings of the traditional Rider-Waite Tarot, and also includes two additional "bonus" cards of my own design. This brings the deck to a round 80, which in numerology is considered the number of destiny.

My primary inspiration for this deck was to explore humankind's relationship with nature. I was especially influenced by ancient cross cultural mythologies. I was always amazed by how societies separated by both miles and millennia all feared, respected, and revered the animals they shared the planet with. As a result, The Children of Litha is a diverse group of illustrations that seeks to blur the distinction between the "human" and the "primal" in an attempt to unite these two and unlock our divine potential.

The Major Arcana (or Trump cards) are the foundations of the tarot. These are the gods and goddesses of the deck, and as such they represent cosmic, karmic, universal forces or changes and present profound and overarching life lessons. The  figures in these cards are all some kind of animal-human hybrid (with few and purposeful exception). This is because they unite the themes of the human condition and the universal, primal energies of nature.

The Aces, or “Root cards” are the root or essence of each suit. The skeletons in each Ace are of an animal from their domain and represent the core or foundations of their power. The bones are, after all, what we leave behind: they are our truest form after life and death have stripped us of all that is superfluous and superficial. They are our foundations, and so too are the Root cards the foundations of each suit.

Court cards, or “face cards” refer to The Page, The knight, The Queen, and The King of each suit. If the major Arcana can be thought of as the divine, and the Aces as the "elemental spirits" just below them, then the court cards represent the people living powerfully in that physical plane the next tier down. This is signified by human figures interacting with their animal companions, highlighting the relationship humans share with their animal counterparts in the mortal plane.

Pip cards, also called “numbered cards” are the common yet important day to day themes expressed by each suit and element. These cards are the events, people, and themes you are interacting with in your life – potentially at this very moment. They deal with everyday conflicts, decisions, emotions, and experiences. Representing these are the animals of their elemental domains:

  • Cups bring forth the finned creatures of the ocean and sea; they offer their heart if not their clarity.
  • Swords bring forth the winged ones of clouds and sky; through their eyes we see who may fall and who may fly.
  • Pentacles bring forth those of the earth with hoof or horn; with their stewardship may none go forlorn.
  •  Wands bring forth creatures of fang and claw; they who hold the flame of life and death within their jaw.

What You'll Receive:

The First 100 backers who purchase the "Early Bird Special" reward Tier, in addition to those who pledge 60$ or higher will receive a first edition Children of Litha Tarot Deck which includes the following:

The Cards:

  • 80 fully illustrated cards (the traditional 78 of the Major and Minor Arcana in the Rider Waite-Smith tradition of tarot reading + two additional cards only included in this first edition printing)
  • 350gsm Cardstock (super thick luxurious cards stock) Matt finish (no finger prints, easy non-stick shuffling)
  • 2.75”x4.75” (70x120mm the standard tarot size for manageability and comfort while handling)
  • Gold edges (for that classy regal look)

 The Box:

  • Hard Flip box with sturdy magnet (to close, secure, and protect your deck while traveling or whenever)
  • Full color (That means the box is just as beautiful on the outside as it is on the inside)
  • Gold foil accents (to match the regal gold edges of the cards)

 The Book:

  • Approximately 2.75”x4.75” (The same size as the cards so everything fits neatly in the box)
  • Full color (for just that extra mile of gorgeous!)
  • Approximately 100 pages (The full book is not yet completed- unlike the artwork which is 100% done-but is a little over half way finished! So this means the page count could change slightly. It is my intention, however; to include useful information about every card, some sample beginner spreads, and a few extra goodies you’ll just have to discover for yourself)

Risks and challenges

Since the deck is already created, this is naturally a low risk investment. However, shipping and distribution may be a little bit of a challenge considering it will be just me, my boyfriend, sister, and mom prepping orders. This might result in longer shipping periods than larger projects. In addition, I will also be working full time and won't be able to update the Kickstarter with new updates and information as often as I would like, but I'll try my best to get decks and rewards shipped out as soon as possible! Calculating shipping can be complicated, especially when considering different suppliers. There is a good chance that the shipping time will much shorter than what's listed, but I didn't want to promise anything before the logistics were all figured out.
