About this project
Hi Everyone! We need help raising funds for an industrial sewing machine, so we can create our first Boovaboxes, a unique new product which will turn your milk crate into a cool, designer bike box. The new machine will allow us to create the first Boovaboxes, which are the rewards below. Each Boovabox is designed by indie artists (or recycled billboards) and handcrafted in the U.S.
I was at the local bike shop looking for a crate/cargo box for my wife Robyn, who loved riding to the community garden. After perusing the catalogs and speaking with Chris King, the shop owner at King's Cyclery, I just couldn't find the mennonite-inspired rear bike box that I was looking for.
I met with my friend Giles Cassie to come up with something sturdy and well designed which could work as a bike box. Why not take an everyday object which can be made from recycled materials and tweak it out??? Yep. With this thought in mind we took the ubiquitous milk crate, and "upcycled it" with a hand stitched, designer fabric covering that keeps stuff from falling out, makes the box waterproof, and nice to look at!
We set up shop in Kutztown, PA where all Boovas are currently created by Jen Lindsay in her kitchen.
Funds from this Kickstarter are slated for a new industrial sewing machine.
The canvas Boovaboxes for this Kickstarter all come with our own vegan wax treatment sans beeswax. We have had great success with our current recipe which offers good water repellency. There is always room for improvement, so we are in the process of doing more testing and research (honeysuckle anyone?) to enhance the characteristics of our wax brew. We aim to offer bars in the future so you can refresh the wax treatment on your own.
One of our rewards is a recycled billboard Boova with a rolltop lid. When used in conjunction with a recycled milk crate you have a 100% recycled product. Plus they're bright, colorful, and highly weatherproof.
Boovaboxes are great off the bike too! Stack em, tote your band equipment, art supplies, kick that dorm room up a notch, whatever... the important thing is that you enjoy your Boovabox!
Oh yes. Our backgrounds! Giles is a designer, craftsmen, contractor, and avid cyclist. I'm a freelance designer and video producer for blastOff media.
