In 2194, commercialized prison systems had become overcrowded. Fighting to make room for more prisoners, and more profit, an auction system was put in pace designed to transfer prisoners to various employers. Nearly one hundred years later, in 2290 the system has become more aggressive and more lenient. As the system became common place the public started viewing it as natural and a blind trust has been placed in the justice system.

Prisoners are now objects, losing all rights when taken into custody and are instantly flagged as property, bought and sold throughout the galaxy for any use legal or otherwise without consequence to the buyer. You have been purchased.

Acquired in the most recent bulk order of prisoners for BioMass Labs, you are being shuttled off for study at the Kohate testing facilities. No information is known about the details of the study. You have been black-bagged, loaded onto a transport shuttle and are awaiting assignment. 

The subject is a sci-fi horror puzzle game where you are the next subject in-line for testing. You are forced into a maze-like complex that you will have to navigate to find your way to the various puzzle rooms that need to be solved.

Learn all the twists and turns of the maze well. You are required to visit a bio-data terminal periodically to record your vital signs and other data for the test. If you fail to do so, you will be removed from testing by euthanization.

But no matter how well you do, or how well you think you know the maze. Never feel too comfortable... you are not alone. Something is hunting you. Be careful, run, hide, and survive the thread wandering in the dark. There's more to this test than it seems.

I am leaning into my environment experience in the game industry to build the entire game from scratch! Going from simple proxy art to the first full pass; check out some of the progress shots taken from early development to now.

Great question!  There are a lot of costs involved in development such as many different tools, sound FX, fees for services, licenses and more which I have invested my own money into happily thus far. Your support would help with with all these costs and allow me to test and build for Mac and Linux as well.

Here is a general cost breakdown. There is wiggle room in the budget for price changes, fees, and other unforeseen costs in development.

Hi everyone! I'm Brian Clarke the developer of The Subject. I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.

        I’ve been working in the video game industry a little over 13 years at studios such as Trion, Ea, and Disney filling roles like lead artist, art director, producer, and other various jobs over the years. After working on lots of different games in different production environments, I wanted to take the things I’ve learned over my career and apply them to the games I've been wanting to build my whole life with the goal to make high quality games in shorter periods of time.

I then left my job at Disney to move and live closer to my family and raise my own. The first indie project I released was Welcome to the Game II as a co-developer venture with Reflect Studios. I have since started DarkStone Digital and am now working full time as an indie developer on my own games.

Risks and challenges

schedule is always a factor in game development. I have been keeping a very clean schedule for my work flow and any time tasks take more or less time, I adjust the schedule and move things around to keep everything on target.

I am fortunate enough to be able to lean on my experience in game development to think creatively around issues that appear as I've helped deal with many over the years but there will be challenges as with any game.
