About this project
By Crom! is a comic about how a stoic barbarian, inspired by the finest barbarians of literary history, helps me deal with the challenges of modern life. From this simple formula I created a webcomic that ran for over two years. Now I would like to collect it into a single, beautiful book to share with my readers, my friends, and the world, and I need your help to make this happen!
I have been reading fantasy and pulp fiction since I was in the single digits, and the barbarian in me has been fed a regular diet of Robert E Howard, Michael Moorcock and JRR Tolkien. While the joke behind By Crom! was at first, what advice could a fictional warrior offer, I quickly discovered that my barbarian guide's practical persona meant he occasionally gave very useful advice.
Writing By Crom! was an incredibly positive experience. It meant I was able to share my own anxieties and fears in a way that felt productive, and the response has shown me these comics have also inspired their readers. Tumblr has described By Crom! as “weirdly inspirational”, and Lauren Davis, at io9.com, described my barbarian advisor as “a no-nonsense voice to guide you away from self-pity”. M. Harold Page, on the Black Gate, goes so far as to describe my advisor as “the wise friend we’d like to have to drag us out of our self-dug pits.” I am so honoured to have heard from readers that these comics have helped them through their own dark times, deep frustrations and existential crises.
I'm ready to make this book. I've already drawn all these comics - you can browse the archives right now on ByCrom-Comic.com. When it comes to understanding the challenges of this kickstarter, I feel very prepared. I’ve been selfpublishing comics since 2012, with three perfect bound books and countless minicomics and zines under my belt. I also worked in the print industry for half a decade, preparing files for print and testing out new machines. Over the past two years I’ve found a Canadian printer I trust, and this will be the fourth book I’ve printed with them. In short, I love fantasy art, I adore comics, and I am very confident that I can self-publish this book just as successfully as my last three.
This collection of By Crom! will collect:
- all the comics ever drawn, including a couple never before shared in print
- all the funny pinups
- a multi-page comic only ever published in the out-of-print first volume
- a couple brand new pinups
- a new essay about the inspiration behind By Crom!
- artist commentary on several strips
- and the absolutely necessary paper doll
It will be 8⅜ x 8⅜” square, perfect bound, with gorgeous colour on the cover and both black and white and colour inside, and clocks in at 144 pages.
Think of it as a fusion of both the first and second volumes, plus a little extra!
It will be printed this spring, after the kickstarter ends, and I plan to be shipping books by July 2016. They’ll be shipped in bubblewrap-padded envelopes, which I have used for book and zine shipping since 2012.
So! Let me tell you about some....
Now that you know all the wonderful things you can get as part of this kickstarter, let me show you all the different...
OH MY GOD WE"RE FUNDED ALREADY? GUESS THAT MEANS IT'S TIME FOR...
With all this cromulence and all these rewards, I’m hoping you will support me as I make this book a reality!
If you’ve been waiting for me to print By Crom!, now is the time to snag your copy. Participating now, in the kickstarter stage, helps me print this book at the highest possible quality and quantity.
I am asking for $2000, which will be combined with my savings to print the book on an offset press. I have done the math and I know exactly where all that money is going:
- Book Printing is the money going directly towards the cost of printing the book
- Shipping is what it costs to ship books and rewards to you from Toronto, Canada
- Editing, Layout, Etc. is all the preparatory costs for getting the book ready to print - I will be hiring a professional editor and layout artist to review my book files before print, to ensure the highest possible quality.
- Fees are an estimate of what Kickstarter and Stripe take off the top.
Thank you for taking the time to read through all of this. I hope you will take the time to support me here on Kickstarter as I create this book!
Now, let us all go forth bravely, into an age undreamed of!
Risks and challenges
I have worked with the printer, Marquis Imprimeur, on three previous books and they have been incredibly timely and professional, so I am not worried. However, with my experience printing books, I know that printing can sometimes be delayed by mechanical problems and machine errors. I have budgeted in time to reprint the entire run before shipping if necessary.
There is also a risk of a very small percentage of shipped books going missing in the mail. All reward tiers with original art will have tracked shipping and insurance so this does not happen. Books will be printed in an amount that they can be replaced if they have not arrived within six weeks of being shipped, or if they arrive damaged.
Beyond that, I feel confident in this process and have the truly difficult part, drawing the comic, already done.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
