There is currently no video clip for the game but a pre-concept demo is available for you to try out for yourself.  You can also scroll down for photos taken in-game of the demo and see if the style suits your aesthetics.  I believe a demo is easier for the backer to grasp the overall feel and what to expect in the final version than having a solo developer trying to convey a concept through words.  Please be aware that the linked demo is a pre-concept demo that I had only a little more than a month to work on.  This is not an alpha or beta demo.  If you are still undecided after testing the demo, please give me another chance to convince you as the demo link will be updated weekly to refine/add features throughout the funding period. The current controls for the demo are:
Keyboard arrow keys for movement
"A" for regular attack
"S" for special attack
Spacebar to jump
"P" to open player menu
"F10" to quit game

The protagonist (you) gets summoned to an unfamiliar land with a peculiar insignia branded onto your body.  On your arrival, you quickly discover yourself having the ability to acquire memory fragments of heroic spirits by merely touching one of their previous possessions; granting you access to their skills and knowledge.  To make matters worse, an enigmatic entity with a sharp tongue enters your mind after placing your hands on an ancient relic.  Travel with your newly found company across a world filled with magic and interact with its inhabitants and creatures in search for a way home.

Brave Insignia is an action-adventure/RPG with styles similar to games like Legend of Zelda, Ys, and Seiken Densetsu series.

  •  Customize your character to suit your play style by leveling up and allocating points to the attributes of your choice.  Whether increasing your maximum health to become a tank or having a vast mana pool to constantly cast spells is entirely up to you.
  • Nonlinear maps and hidden areas for you to explore and reap rewards or choose to ignore them with no major penalties.
  •  Day/Night cycle: view the scenery under the soothing sunlight or embrace the eerie atmosphere of the shadows.
  •  Learn spells to aid you on your journey through perilous areas and dungeons.  Current goal is to add one spell per dungeon (support spells such as healing and buffs are excluded in this goal), making a total of 8 offensive spells.  

Brave Insignia: Unsung Memories is being developed using Unity game engine and planned for release on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.  If additional platforms/distribution mediums may be added in the future.

The demo contains many unrefined mechanics and unfinished touches since it was made using slightly past 1 month's time period.  If I worked on a single aspect to make it as smooth as I could in that time frame I would have nothing else for show except that particular element.  I split my time across multiple areas: level design, character movement, animation, AI, and others miscellaneous scripts in order to help you have a glimpse of what to expect the game to be.  Hopefully the demo can articulate my enthusiasm and dedication to you as a new developer to the scene.

I am aware of various issues in the demo (clunky attack inputs, unfinished animations, wall climbing, no spells, camera clipping, etc) but I will release an update to the pre-concept demo weekly during the funding period in hopes of earning your trust to the cause.

The current planned updates are:

  • 1st week - add in targeting/lock-on system for the player to aim attacks/spells at enemies easier.  Add in sound effects to attacks.
  • 2nd week - finish linking attributes to other scripts and enable the player to level up and experience the effects each attribute has (currently only "Vitality" and "Will" are linked in the demo).  Vitality gives a bonus to the player's maximum health and relies heavily on the player's level.  Will increases your willpower regeneration rate, enabling you to use the special attack ("S" key) more often.  There are also other bonuses each attribute makes.
  • 3rd week - refine the regular attack combo and animations. The current implementation involves utilizing cool-down timers for each attack phase and increasing the "Dexterity" attribute lowers the cool-down rate. However I am planning on taking a different approach and omit the timers and allow the player to mash the attack button and investing in the "Dexterity" attribute increase the attack speed instead.

If there are any updates/fixes you would like to see first, just let me know!  If there's a lot of requests for it, I will give it first priority; whether it's increasing the map, improving the enemy AI, adding more animations, etc.

Risks and challenges

I am the sole developer working on this project at the moment and require time to find/purchase licences to music, sound effects, visual effects, animations, etc.

The estimated delivery date is for a minimum of 4 dungeons and surrounding areas. My goal is to have a total of 8 dungeons and surrounding areas. I feel like an action/adventure game needs to have a lot of explorable areas and secrets before it can categorized under this genre. Fret not, for whether the project gets funded beyond the goal or right at the mark, I do intend to add all the dungeons and areas. I have confidence in my abilities to be able to deliver AT LEAST 4 dungeons and surrounding areas at the end of the estimated date. I will release patches for the remaining dungeons for you to download when they are complete at no extra cost. Each dungeon will be larger than the previous one, which will require more time to complete. Thank you for your understanding.
