It's kind of astounding.
When this all began, I hadn't planned for Rang Raaz to come to Kickstarter. I had no idea if this idea would work; if we'd even be able to raise enough to cover post-production. And here we are, with over $3,151 more than we asked for. Seriously, things usually don't work out this way. Especially when you're trying to make a movie. Usually, things fall through. Usually, you fail, and you just have to get up and you try again. And so when your faith is rewarded, when you put something out into the world and discover that you're not just shouting into a vacuum--that there are other people out there who want to be a part of the act of creation as much as you want to create--it leaves you kind of stunned.
Looking back, Rang Raaz started off as a conversation. It’s started with me listening about the issues faced by minority groups in Pakistan. With me taking that topic, and framing it as a narrative short- then emailing the screenplay to anyone who might be interested. It’s amazing that the film continues to be a conversation. But now, it’s not just between me and a few friends. Thanks to you, it’s one that has been tabled on our national newspapers, inspiring coverage that I never could have dreamed of.
Fast forward a year, and I form an incredible production team of talented artists, actors and musicians under CityLights Productions. We unveil the ‘Rang Raaz’ teaser trailer on an international publication, The Fader, and are 178% Kickstarter funded to support the completion of the film.
After working alone for so long, my team is what I am most grateful for. At this point we’ve worked on stage plays, commercials and short films together- and they feel more like family than colleagues. Thank you for believing in Rang Raaz and bringing us to this point.
As you guys have made your pledges, so I have made a pledge to you to do everything I can to give you a film you will love. This is why we have decided to re-shoot the entire film in January. We now have the time, a budget (Still can’t believe it!) and the drive to make Rang Raaz as incredible as it can be. I hope you will see that you all have become a part of something that you couldn't get anywhere else. When all is said and done, it is my greatest hope that I have earned the privilege of calling each of you a fan.
As for the future, we are now gearing up for Rang Raaz 2.0. The first thing on my agenda is to put all 77 of your names up under the Special Thanks Page on our FB. I will be in touch with more news in the weeks ahead. And as soon as the film is finished, I will let you guys know the details of the Online Premiere.
Thank you to my family, friends, supporters, journalists, colleagues, and that girl I went to elementary school with. We will do our best to make the most beautiful film we can.
