Long ago my love of storytelling placed me on the path to become a middle grade and YA author. I’ve traveled from reading with my grandparents and parents as a child, to most recently, piloting a boys read program and teaching creative writing to middle school students.

As a parent, educator, and author, I found it natural to combine the themes of bullying and peer pressure with the teaching elements of vocabulary lists to enhance test-taking skills, common core activities that align with state standards, and motivational techniques aimed to heighten a student’s “love for reading.” And finally, multiculturalism, something I’ve addressed in my work from day one and have become firmly engaged in. These experiences have led me to create …

The IA Series is an origin story and a hero’s journey that follows thirteen-year-old orphan “Naz” Andersen as he comes of age.

Naz lives with his indifferent foster parent and his little sister Meri who he is determined to protect from the mean streets of, what is known as, the Exclave. After the tragic and suspicious loss of his friend Artie, Naz sets out on a quest to discover the truth. During his search for answers, he begins to discover with the help of Meri and his therapist, that the voices in his head, his nightmares, and sleepwalking are actually telekinesis and telepathy.

When the unthinkable happens and tragedy strikes again, Naz must face the full force of the dark world around him and the only way he can survive is to embrace the secret world within.

Click play to hear an excerpt from the first book in the series, IA: Initiate.

The first book in the series, Initiate was published, 2014 by Purple Ash Press. The second book in the series, B.O.S.S. (eBook) was published, December 2015, with the print version set for publication, March 2016. To date, the series has received more than 350 positive reviews and ratings on Amazon and Goodreads as well as critical acclaim by industry professionals.

Kids, parents, and industry professionals agree, the characters of Meri and Naz are totally relatable and endearing, the storyline is current, and the scenes are engaging. The IA series delivers all this in a very imaginative way without offensive language, sexual innuendo, or inappropriate themes. Although the series has come to the attention of both smaller presses and traditional publishers, my team and I have decided to take the series in a unique direction …

The mission and vision of the Adopt an Author program is to create an atmosphere where boys and girls learn to love reading and writing.

In practical terms, the program schedules classroom and/or whole school reads where students, teachers, and parents read the same book. During the read, students interact with the author in a virtual classroom: a wikispace where they can ask questions about the book and the writing process in general. After the reading the author will pay a visit to the school and interact with the students in person, this will include a dramatic reading, a Q & A session, games and giveaways.

Here's an example of the activities found in the literature unit.

John Darryl Winston I am the founder of the Adopt an Author program and author of the IA series. I piloted a successful Boysread program at Marcus Garvey Academy in Detroit Michigan where my job was to motivate low readers. I also cofounded the Winston Institute of Art, a non-profit fine and performing arts institute that serviced at risk children in the Detroit Metropolitan area.

Dominique Wilson avid reader, research scientist, CEO and founder of Purple Ash Press tutors students in Mathematics and the Sciences. Her passion is to bring multiculturalism mainstream in literature.

Andre Floyd is an educator, Instructional Specialist, and organizer for the Jumamosi Shule (Saturday School). He cofounded, along with me, the Winston Institute of Arts and is a proponent of educational reform.

You are the final piece to the puzzle. You can help by donating and receiving cool rewards. You can help by spreading the word; please follow Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and share this Kickstarter with your friends. You are the integral part to help us initiate

My team is enthusiastic about motivating children to read and develop a love for reading.

We will use our funding to support the needs of the Adopt an Author program by publishing, promoting, and marketing the IA series. We will also publish the literature unit, acquire appropriate vendor licenses for schools, and produce gifts for in-school giveaways and to fulfill the rewards.

If we exceed our funding goals, we would like to produce and publish the IA audiobooks, secure professional reviews from, Kirkus, Pacific, San Francisco, and Manhattan book reviews and hire Smith Publicity, Inc and AuthorBuzz (two book publicity firms) to bring media attention to the series and broaden our audience.

Why do I care? I am a parent, educator, and author who understands first hand the challenges associated with motivating children to want to read. Once an unmotivated reader myself, I am in a unique position to know the path from indifference to appreciation of the written word and more importantly how to motivate young readers to make that transition.

Risks and challenges

There is no guarantee that the Adopt an Author program will be accepted. However there are individual teachers, and schools that have shown interest in the program, we have successfully test run the program in several classrooms, and the strong movement toward educational reform could work in our favor.

The primary publishing risks are rooted in the public launch of the book. It will be challenging as an independent author to promote a new book and establish a foothold in the traditional marketplace. We have creative marketing planned and hope that my large following on Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads will help to seed the pot.
