We want radio DJs to be able to pick the music that they play. When they lost that liberty we lost an outlet for local culture and local economy.
We want to promote this movie across the country because we love radio and what it can do for local voices, local bands & local charities. Corporate FM reveals from many perspectives how localism has diminished and what that means for the rest of the country. Here’s the story: DJs have a gift of listening to the best of their communities and then presenting that back to them. When live local voices are replaced with prerecorded and satellite programs, it ends an age-old symbiotic relationship between radio and the community. That hurts emerging bands, small charities and even the emergence of new ideas on a local level. Corporate FM uncovers a financial shell game that doomed radio the moment it started to consolidate. The medium of radio becomes threatened when there are only 2 stations worth listening to.
Unlike Facebook, Satellite radio, or web-based music sharing applications, locally-owned terrestrial radio can reach thousands of people across all incomes and ages in a local region at the same time with a message that is relevant to them at that moment. That ability is what once moved entire cities to unite around local bands, local charities, local businesses, and even new ideas. Our local infrastructure used to depend heavily on radio, but now there is a communication void in our cities that we have not yet filled. Radio is free and its everywhere. It is potentially the most powerful way that we can unite a community.
