In theory Hat-Trick started over 20 years ago. Back in our teenage years, infected with football fever, we spent all days playing football managers (first on Amiga, then on PC). Dissatisfied with their limitations, we decided to make our own tabletop simulation. Thus, the journey through several editions of football games had begun (you can read the entire story here). 

 Being 17 and not concerned about the game’s reception (we did it entirely for ourselves), our first games included such beauties as trainings, player forms, referee types or… pitch brawls. Needless to say, the games lasted forever and we never ever managed to reach the mid-season. 

Two decades and a dozen of games later, in 2014, we decided to put our passion into practice and, thus, Hat-Trick was born. Take a look what we’ve come up with.

You’ve seen (some of) the cards – if you want all of them described in detail, visit our home page. What you need now is a football pitch. And you build it from another type of cards, the ones that you could see in the background with jerseys on them. They are called Player Cards and once you arrange them on the table, everything looks like that.

 

So, what is it all about?  

Well, we won’t be going into details just yet– everything will be explained later (if you are impatient, just scroll down to the 'How to play' section or visit our site). What you do need to know before we move on is that you will be spending a lot of time moving players back and forth. Why?

Look at these little footballs on their cards? These are players’ stats, namely – attack and defense. 

Player cards are 2-sided. The blue player no. 7 is on his regular side with normal stats, whereas his red counterpart is on the star side and has slightly better stats (defence 3 in place of 2)

So when you move a player forward, you basically use his stats to strengthen the line you have moved into (and weaken the one you have left). In other words a big part of the base game is about balancing your formations, just like in real football. Players function as one unit in order to realize your tactical assumptions.

What we needed, however, was some individuality. After all, football is all about individuals. We wanted to recognize our players. To have our Men of the Match. To see who underperformed.

And, thus, we came up with the idea for the expansion. Have a look.

 

If it gets funded, the Players Expansion will – first and foremost – introduce 22 player roles. What are these? Remember moment ago, as you’ve been reading about (and looking at) the Player Cards – the blue and red one? Well, in ‘Players’ expansion we will be replacing them with those.

This time it is the red player that is on the regular side (silver) and the blue player is a star (gold). Note that not only stats but also skills differ between the two.

And now imagine you have 22 of those, each available in the regular and star variant. This amounts to 44 different skills to choose from when setting up your team. From now on your team will not only operate on macro-level but you will also have to micro-manage it.

Beforehand, however, we need a way to determine how many players you can have in your team. This is where another new thing comes handy: the Budget Cards. Here’s how they look.

What you see here is the price list for each player and amount of money you are allowed to spend between defensive/offensive players. The 4 rows with Roman numerals indicate the quality of the team you are creating (the higher, the better).

Shortly speaking, if we wanted to create a defensive-minded team of 2nd tier, we would have 21 stars to spend on defensive players and 9 on offensive ones.

We realize, however, that you may want to leave the transfer dealings to the board and simply play football. In that case, we have prepared something for you as well. Behold.

 

24 national teams – fully customized, up-to-date and ready to play. Just flip them over and follow the guidelines. And by ‘guidelines’ we mean pretty straightforward illustrated set-up. Take a look.

So, basically, what we end up with looks similar to the base game set-up. Only this time we have new players on the field. And now, with all those individual skills at their disposal, they can really make a difference.
And last but not least, the expansion will introduce a few new match events – for example, corners – which, we felt, were missing from the base game.

 
But this probably does not tell you much if you’ve never played the base game. So let’s just have a look at some video tutorials which should give you a basic idea how the game plays. (If you happen to be a Hat-Trick veteran, you can probably skip the next section)

Note that the following Video-Trainings refer mainly to the base game. The 'Players' Expansion introduces player skills and a few new rules which broaden the scope of the existing system but the basic 'engine' stays intact.

From now on, in place of the Player Cards from the base game we will be using Player Cards from the expansion (devoid of skills so as not to complicate matters).
The goal of the build-up play is to place your player with the ball in the final line of the pitch (in front of your opponent’s goal). Doing so will trigger a Scoring Opportunity (presented in the video number 3). 
The game in midfield is highly tactical and requires plenty of skill to outplay your opponent.

 

Scoring Opportunity is similar to the buid-up play but much faster. No adding up footballs, no counting – this time it's all about player movement. Try to outmaneuver you opponent to find best shooting position.

 

And finally, everybody's favourite part, no matter it it is real football or Hat-Trick.

 

We don’t have any videos for you here because there’s no need. If you understand the basic game system, you know everything there’s to know. Players will simply allow you to ‘bypass’ certain rules or use them in a slightly modified fashion. Hava a look at the Playmaker to get a better idea.

So, if you decide to sign, let’s say, a gold Playmaker, his skills will let you make a Short Pass that will travel not 1 but 2 lines forward. This is supposed to reflect his vision and creativity.

Note, however, that once you use the skill, the player flips to the other side leaving you – in this particular case – with a regular Playmaker. To flip back, you will have to use his regular skill which lets you replace the Action Card played that turn but only if it is stronger than your opponent’s card. 

  So, as you can guess, regular skills are bit more difficult to execute but that is the idea – using (and losing) your gold skill is supposed to be easy. Raising your game, on the other hand, will require some effort.

But that will also differ from player to player. Let’s take a look at, possibly, the easiest player to flip no matter if it’s his star or regular side.

This player, on the other hand, flips to the other side whenever he participates in his teams’ action – either defensive or offensive. So, even though his skill may not be so impressive as the Playmaker’s (hence the lower price), he makes up for it with his, well, versatility. Enough to say that before tests we have thought that he‘ll never make it to the final version. In the end, he‘s become one of our favourite squad ‘fillers’.

And now, let’s wrap up by showing you what you are getting for your money.

This campaign is primarily concerned with the ‘Players’ expansion. However, we assume that you might be new to Hat-Trick and – since the expansion requires the base game – you can get it here as well. 

Still, we’d like to begin by presenting you the content of the expansion followed by the base game.

 

Keep in mind that the ‘Players’ Expansion requires the base game. So if you are new to Hat-Trick and don’t have the base game yet, please choose other pledge levels.

The Manager is one of the most basic pledge levels where you can get the base game ‘Hat-Trick’ and the ‘Players’ Expansion. For those, however, that already have the base game, we offer the chance of choosing 2 expansions instead, so you could create symmetrical line-ups with, for example, 2 Playmakers in one team.

The following pledge levels also offer this possibility – just let us know in advance that you want the 2nd expansion instead of the base game. 

The ‘Players’ Expansion will include 24 national teams. These are as follows (alphabetic order):

We realize that some seemingly obvious choices are missing from the list but we had to apply some criterion and we did (no doubt football fans will know which one). We could not modify it in any way as it would be unfair on those countries that were left out.

These are only 3 examples of teams that can be included but there can be many more – just choose any exisiting country that you'd like to see in the expansion.

As for the procedure, we are the ones who will be responsible for the team’s line-up, rank, price, etc. However, before pledging, you can always ask us about our assessment of a given team’s rank and price, and only then decide if you still want to pledge.

This pledge level not only lets you choose a team to be included in Hat-Trick but you will also select its strating XI. It works like this:

1. You select a team and we give you money available to spend based on our assessment and the team’s current world ranking.

2. Yo get a price list from us and you are good to go. Build the team any way you see fit.

3. See your team included in the final version of the ‘Players’ Expansion.

 

This is your chance not only to coach any given team in the world but to play in it as well. Generally speaking, we take your photo and transfer your face to one Utility Man of your choice. From now on, whenever somebody plays Hat-Trick with this Utility Man on the field, it will be you!

Let us explain how it works.

1. Utility Men are players signed for free. So, after you sign all your role players, there will be some spaces left to fill them with Utility Men. This is the most common role in the game. Have a look at them.

2.As you can see, Utility Men have the same minor skill which lets them flip to the star side after their side has conceded a goal. But once they do flip they have different skills depending whether they are Wingers (8, 9), Central Midfielders (6, 7), etc.

3. Now, if you’d like to be one of them, you pick the position on which you’d like to play (number) and in which team (red or blue). We contact you and ask you for a photo. For example, like this one.

4. And then we make a Utility Man with your face – only the face. The shape of the head stays the same. And you’ll get a free haircut :) Have a look.

Naturally, you will get to see the final result and approve it, before it goes to print.

If you are not into teams and players, and prefer business dealings instead, why not advertise yourself, your company, your url or anything else that comes to your mind on the cards? Look at the hoardings in the background. This is where your ad would go.

We offer 4 sets of ad spaces, each consisitng of 32 images with your ad. These are:

– regular side of red Player Cards

– regular side of blue Player Cards

– star side of red Player Cards

– star side of blue Player Cards.

In other words, your ad will be shown behind every player in the game.

And finally, you can become our primary sponsor, displaying your logo, url, company name etc. on the front of the box. Colors, fonts and imagery are entirely up to you. Just name it and we will design it. And that’s about all.

 

Our goal is to collect €6000 which will fully cover the Kickstarter fees and production costs of 1000 copies of the ‘Players’ expansion and/or the base game. We could go for a smaller number but anything below the 1000 threshold is a waste of money – ours, yours and the printing houses’.

In other words, if we manage to collect the €6000, this will only signal the start of the extra-time for us, where we will be looking to find ways to sell the remaining copies and make profit.

Of course, there’s also a chance that we will exceed the €6000 limit. What then? Where will the money go? What about some stretch goals?

Actually, there’s only one stretch goal and that is the game development. We have hundreds of ideas for future expansion which include:

 

The game is practically ready to print. We will be working with the same manufacturer that printed the base game, so there will be no unwelcome surprises. As for the welcome ones – should you decide to modify the game content by choosing various pledge levels (see ‘Custom content rewards’), we will be forced to work a bit on including everything in the game. However, we have adjusted the allotted times to allow for the possibility of these sorts of delays. You, the backers, are our top priority and we feel communication is a non-negotiable necessity in this relationship. If there are any adjustments or changes you will be notified.

Risks and challenges

We have already two games under our belt. The first one was Moto-Craze Speedway, released in 2013 (back then we operated as ZGrani).
One year later we moved to Germany and changed our name to Unplugged where we released Hat-Trick. Both games had exactly the same format (box, number of cards, rulebook) and were printed by the same trusted and reliable people. Everything worked fine.
Now, we want to continue with exactly the same format and the same people. In other words, we know what we are doing so you can trust us. All we need is your support.
