About this project
Rise of the Rock Star is a board game where players use 2 decks of combo-making cards and roll dice in a race around the unique multi-level board, rising in notoriety to become a Rock and Roll Legend. Players gain Fame Points to Level Up and to ultimately win the game. The variety of methods that players can use to gain Fame Points creates automatic momentum allowing players to focus on which strategy is best for each game.
Rise of the Rock Star is a game for 2-4 players ages 13+. Most versions of the game can be played in around 45 minutes, and several included alternate play methods allow game to increase and decrease in strategic complexity and length of play, making the game fun, customizable, and playable again and again.
The game is finished and we are now in a holding pattern until funding commences. At that time we can pay our artist (Jason Chalker) to finish the art/design and our manufacturer (to make it).
We are running blogs all project long, tweets, and FB updates so head over to RiseOfTheRockStar.com to keep up!
Incase you are interested, here are the rules to Rise of the Rock Star! We have hired a professional copy editor to make sure they read well and are complete!
We came up with the idea of Rise of the Rock Star out of a 'boiling down' of ideas for a game about becoming famous (either through music or acting). After some initial brainstorming we discovered that in order to make the game cohesive (theme-wise) we had to pick one and to me the Rock and Roll (music) theme was the way to go. Much more fun! I was a child of the 80's and I must admit a lot of my ideas for the game tended to lean towards that decade. Chris had to correct those crazy notions so there is more of a mix of many 'ages' of Rock.
We feel this is a great game and lots of fun to play. I have to credit Chris for really ramping up the combo cards and pushing this game over the top, making it not just roll and move game. We enjoy it and we think you will enjoy it as well! Rock on!

In this section we will show you the work we have done for this game. We have written many blogs that are getting posted over the next 60 days but we want to show some progress here too.
We will post blogs about the game's creation over the next 8 weeks (every few days) as well as some other blogs (we love to write!) so check them out regularly!
Board Game Work
As you can see above we started with a very basic posterboard with card sleeves cut up and taped to it. We could then begin inserting the spaces we need to test. These pockets allowed us to slide out the spaces that needed tweaking and fix them.
Next up came a printed board. This was created in a photo program and printed at a local copy house. We then began playing with the color design, trying various color combinations and using public domain images for filler art.
The next board we came up with was printed out and pasted to a real game board. This is the final version of the board. The 4th version of the board was simply color and visual element work. Not being happy with our work (we are not artist) we handed over design duties to our artist Jason Chalker.
Just like in the game we are having to do our fair share of promotion. We were at Dallas Comicon on launch weekend talking to people and spending a little time with our artist, Jason.
Week before last Chris and I did an interview with The Fort Worth Star Telegram about the game and they sent a photographer (Bob) over to do some interesting photos.
We have been able to get custom dice made for the game! You will get 1 regular six-sided dice and 2 custom dice. Here is the design (my adobe skills aren't that great at the render but you get the idea)!
Here is another photo look-see of the design:
We have removed the boring Meeples and are getting carboard art player pawns:
* We have also made the box a little thinner (from 3" to 2.5").
* Bob (our Star Telegram photographer) give us the brilliant idea to turn the Progress Tokens into the shape of guitar picks! Excellent! Done!
Risks and challenges
As with any Kickstarter project there are risks. We have planned for any eventuality that might arise but there is always... the unknown! (cue ominous music). You can go view our MANY blogs and website to see firsthand all the pre work we have done for this project.
Rest assured we are prepared for this and think you will be pleased at the outcome of this most excellent project!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
