What Is Tavern Keeper?
Tavern Keeper is an online community for Tabletop Roleplaying Games - a fast, easy to use, mobile & tablet-friendly way to create campaigns, play-by-post roleplay, and create an in-depth profile for your characters.
What is the goal of this campaign?
Tavern Keeper wants to take your Tabletop RPG to the next level with a Dynamic Character Sheet engine. Whether you’re new to Roleplaying Games or an old vet, this tool will help players get up to speed quickly with a new game system by providing an intuitive interface based on the unique requirements of the gaming system you choose. Tied into our Campaign management tool, Looking for Group interface, and addictive play-by-post Roleplaying, it’s the central hub for Tabletop RPG’s online!
Top Level Summary: What we want to build
It is Two Parts: Dynamic Character Sheets, and a ‘House Rules’ Manager, starting with the Fate Core and Savage Worlds systems.
- Character Sheets, in two formats: a Simple, Beautiful form, and a Dynamic, guided Calculator that knows the system you’re playing.
- A House Rules Manager: GM’s can build out and attach a House Rules “guidebook” to a campaign, or extend a system’s Dynamic Character Sheet for their players. This project will build a House Rules Manager for the Fate Core and Savage Worlds systems!
Two Parts - Beautiful Forms, and Dynamic Character Sheets
These Forms would be freely available to any character on Tavern Keeper (no subscription required, no upfront cost!)
The Fate Core Dynamic Character Sheet would be free and available to everyone. (More on that, below!)
All future Dynamic Character Sheets would be a small, one-time purchase for your account, unlocked to use on all of your characters, forever.
The Building Blocks to build anything
Which systems are you going to start with?
1. Character Sheet Forms, available for free to everyone, for every system we build now and in the future.
2. Dynamic Character Sheet Calculator available for a small one-time fee per account for all characters
Fate Core’s Dynamic Character Sheet would be FREE to everyone.
Savage Worlds' Dynamic Character Sheet will be available for a small fee, with a big discount to subscribers.
3. House Rules Manager available to subscribers only, ties into dynamic character sheets and also creates House Rule Books you can tie into any campaign!
Every backer tier we offer provides you with enough Gems to buy at least one system, or try the House Rules Manager for a month (in addition to Tavern Keeper’s other benefits).
Backer Perks
The simple form version of every system we support will be free to anyone to use within Tavern Keeper, without any upfront cost or subscriptions.
The Dynamic version of that system can be unlocked for a small one-time fee per account, between $3 - $12, depending on the complexity of the system. Once unlocked you’d have it for ANY character you create on that account.
The Fate Core Dynamic Character Sheet will be FREE to everyone, forever!
Why The Fee?
Firstly, the ongoing creation, updating, and support of these character sheets will take both time and money.
Secondly, many of the game systems we want to support will fall under IP (Intellectual Properties) - with which a partnership or licensing deal may need to be made.
Charging a small a-la-carte fee for access allows us to:
- Pay for IP royalties if needed
- Build, Maintain, and Support the site and product
- Find, Create and Promote new systems!
Subscribers to Tavern Keeper will get discounts on these prices, up to 30% off the non-subscriber price, in addition to other account perks.
How long will it take?
We have committed to delivering the first round of these features to our backers (through beta testing & beyond) 60 days after we start the project, with regular (weekly or more) updates throughout the building & testing process. We plan to officially start development of this project in January 2014.
We will release the free open form version in advance of the Dynamic Stat Sheet for all systems.
Backers that have access to the beta site will get the latest and greatest as we build it (much, much sooner than 60 days - more like weeks after we start), with the unique position to provide feedback that will drive the details of how we implement these features.

Risks and challenges
We've done our best to mitigate as much risk as possible up front by developing our platform and testing it with our users, and do as much homework as we can on the development challenges we will face when building this product.
However there are always unknowns such as unexpected technical failures, injury or illness that could prevent one of us from working, or an unexpected technical hurdle that causes significant delay.
We will communicate with our users and backers every step of the way to keep them informed of the status of this project, good or bad!
