About

A book that shows the REAL price paid for sexual violence.

I want to create a collection of stories to shift the focus from the "lost" future of assailants to the present and future price survivors pay for being the victims of a heinous act. These collection of first-hand stories will highlight the reality of being assaulted; the price paid comes in many forms — financial, social, emotional, physical, mental, and the list goes on. I'm aiming for the anthology to have at least 20 contributors.

Why I am creating this project now?

Honestly? This has been a long time coming. But the non-stop coverage of Brock Turner and the offensive things his father has said made me finally reach a breaking point: enough is enough.

Brock Allen Turner’s dad, Dan A. Turner said 6 months' worth of jail time is "a steep price to pay for 20 min of action."My response: What about a lifetime of healing from trauma? Is that not a heavy price to pay in response to a man's unwillingness to not rape? So let's answer these questions.

What your pledge goes to:

  • Paying contributors: I believe that survivors should be compensated for the labor (emotional and otherwise) of sharing their stories. Each contributor will get a stipend for their contribution.
  • Book printing and shipping costs: Hopefully this is self-explanatory. I got a quote from a recommended, low-cost book printer!
  • Web hosting: I want to create a digital home for the project. Regular hosting fees will apply.
  • Kickstarter and processing fees: About 10% of the budget will go to the cost of using the platform and processing pledges.
  • Editing: In addition to compensating the contributors, I want the editor(s) to be compensated for their time.
  • Legal costs: To cover the cost of an attorney for all legalese needed to complete this project.

What's with the name?

The name of the project, #SurvivorPrivilege, is in honor of the hashtag I created in 2014 as a response to George WIll's offensive column doubting the prevalence of campus sexual assault lamenting that the call to make campuses safer has made "victimhood" a “coveted status that confers privileges.” Fortunately, others saw how absurd this is and helped it trend nationally on Twitter.

Here's the reality:

It’s time for some #realtalk about the reality of surviving sexual violence. I don’t deny that there are leaps and bounds made to recognize the real impact of rape culture. But we have a long way to go. Time and time again, I have continue to see individuals at all levels of society - from average citizens to famous journalists to courtroom judges - shed tears and provide a disproportionate amount of concern for the impact of rapists being seen for who they are. This is unacceptable.

It’s time to talk about — and highlight — the price that survivors pay simply by having the misfortune of being in the presence of a rapist who decided to strike.

I want to make a book that shows that there is a very steep price to pay for being raped. And what happens when society cares more about assailants who got caught instead of the millions of survivors who suffer. Living life as a rape victim is truly too steep a price.

Risks and challenges

Since we'll be depending on a number of people to contribute and work for this project to happen, there is a risk that wrangling everyone together may be an obstacle to maintain the timeline.

That said, I am already lining up a great list of dependable folks who will make this wonderful and necessary project a reality!
