About this project

Julie Laffin has been invited to participate in the Jakarta Biennale for 2011 by activating one of her enormous red gown installations in the city of Jakarta. Laffin has created a huge new gown of scarlet silk to grace the festival this December and is planning a performance to accompany it. Joining forces with her long-time collaborator, Clover Morell, the two are campaigning to raise airfare and travel expenses for Morell to travel to Jakarta to perform the work. They hope to create this spectacular performance event between January 1 and January 15, 2012.

The piece will transform perceptions of urban space by disrupting the flow of urban pedestrian traffic in this highly populated city, and insert itself into the ritual of everyday life. The work positions and extends the feminine body in relationship to modern architecture and the built environment. The spectacular and monumental nature of the fabric/sculpture will engage a huge array of people moving through the area.

About our generous sponsors

This project is being sponsored by and presented in partnership with two Chicago-based arts organizations, Voice of the City and the Borderbend Arts Collective.

Building community is the central focus for Voice of the City programs and performances. The alliance works to bring together the sometimes fragmented artistic community of Chicago by providing on-going opportunities for collaboration and dialogue between artists of various disciplines. When artists are able to connect meaningfully with one other, their work inevitably grows in richness and scope.

Voice of the City is also firmly committed to sharing the work of these talented artists with the residents of Logan Square. Through partnerships with other neighborhood organizations, like Alliance of Local Service Organizations, Logan Square Neighborhood Association, and St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Logan Square, the alliance brings high-quality arts education and arts experiences to the Logan Square neighborhood.

Breaking Down Barriers
Many times throughout history art has been used as a weapon to create separation. Dividing community through unaffordable pricing, creating the allusion of grandeur of the artist detached from the audience, making distinctions of the merit between artistic disciplines, or devaluing teaching as a fundamental component to an artists process.

Voice of the City builds community by breaking the barriers that separate the artist from their audience, by keeping high quality arts experiences affordable to everyone, not making distinctions between what is "high art" or "low art" --  focusing only on what is good art; providing informal non-competitive forums for audiences and artists to discuss the work, and providing opportunity for the "Phat" artist: An artist who strengthens his/her work by reminding themselves of the fundamentals, and the reasons for why they became an artist in the first place, by teaching art. The balanced artist makes art and teaches art.

This project is being fiscally sponsored by Borderbend Arts Collective, a 501(c)3 arts organization whose mission to promote the arts by giving artists opportunities to collaborate and show their work to a variety of audiences. Poetry, music, performance, and the visual arts are no longer exclusive: hybrid forms and interarts collaborations can more effectively reach today's audiences. Borderbend programs encourage artists to use innovative technologies and strategies to engage with artists from communities in Chicago and around the world. Multi-venue musical performances, literary events, visual arts exhibitions, and interdisciplinary festivals reach beyond immediate cultural and aesthetic norms to bridge boundaries among participants, audiences, and art forms.
