Here's the deal: we see a problem. There are tons of people who are working on world-changing projects but are dumbfounded by how to use social media sites like Facebook to get the word out, engage deeply, and move your project forward. To boot: there are plenty of campaigners who are great at the basics, but could use a real boost in skills and strategy to break through and win the Internet.
Here's how we hope to help: We're going to make a short and sweet guide to help anyone become an online organizing ninja. We're setting out to cram the best strategies, most tactical information, and compelling case studies into a brief e-guide that can help you rock the social web for change.
What will it look like? The final product will be a free PDF in the range of 30-50 pages, including 10-15 awesome chapters and tid bits of wisdom from the online organizing pros.
Here are 6 example chapters we're aiming for (among others!):
• Where is the social web headed in 2013 and beyond?
• How to make a Kick-Ass Meme (without any graphic design skills!)
• 12 Secrets for Breaking Through the Noise on Facebook
• Twitter 101
• Super Tips for Blogger Outreach
• Going Real World: How to Host an All-Star Meetup.
Can the Green Memes team really pull this off? Yes! If you check out our bios, you'll see that we've got a fair bit of experience with social media projects to help us write the guide. Folks on our team have led social media efforts at 350.org, Tar Sands Blockade, and co-led online campaigns at New Yorkers Against Fracking, Energy Action Coalition, and Friends of the Earth, as well as regularly make memes that spread like wildfire. But that's not all! We won't just be writing these chapters ourselves. A big part of why we're raising $2,220 is so we can pay some of the best practitioners in the field to submit pieces on their latest tactics, stories, and reportbacks. When is this happening? The process has already begun! At this point, we're working with potential chapter authors to cement the contents of the guide and work on what the chapters themselves will look like. If all goes well with fundraising, we'll have our chapters complete by the end of May, and our guide will be out in June 2013!
Risks and challenges
Oh gosh. We think our biggest challenge is that this is an ever-changing landscape, and so how does our little guide pack enough evergreen punch, while also being completely useful right now?
