About

"For the Win" is a treasure hunting comedy about 4 nerds who work in a comic book store and go on a journey to find the first issue of Mr. Mighty Might. They are racing against a rival comic book store who wants to find the book purely for financial reasons and to drive our heroes out of business. As the four of them get closer to the truth they find they are now targets of a secret government organization called H.A.R.V.E.S.T. (Head American Research for Villainy, Espionage, Sabotage and Terrorism). This organization believes there is a secret buried within the pages of the comic book; the kind of secret that would be dangerous in the wrong hands. In the name of national security, H.A.R.V.E.S.T. will stop at nothing to get possession of the book, no matter who stands in their way.

And, you know, funny stuff happens too because...comedy!

Will our heroes find the comic book before the other team? Will they get captured by H.A.R.V.E.S.T.? Will they learn the secrets of Mr. Mighty Might? Find out all this and more in "For the Win!"

Look at our pretty poster!

pretty.
pretty.

Even though Elephant is the manager of the comic book store, he doesn't really consider himself a nerd. He graduated top of his business class, reads self-help books, and decorates his apartment in motivational posters (cough, cough, nerd!). He is a born leader who never found his footing in the corporate world. After losing his job, an opportunity to manage the comic book store presented itself. Normally he would have never considered it, but it was owned by Roger Rangle, an actor best known for his title role in a cheesy 80's sci-fi TV show "Lars Darkstar: Cosmic Commando." While he would never admit it, Elephant is a huge fanboy of the show and of Roger so he was willing to take the job until he got back on his feet. That was three years ago.

Moby is one of the workers at the comic book store. Even though she is a huge nerd that practices magic (particularly card tricks) and goes Live Action Role-Playing on the weekends, nobody dares make fun of her. She is dark, sarcastic, and mischievous and has been known to throw a few punches in her day, especially to men who try to treat her like nothing more than a sex object. Sarcastic remarks aside, she is fiercely loyal to her team and those she cares about, though she would never be caught dead actually saying anything nice about them. She is one bad-ass chick you do not want to mess with.

LT enjoys working at the comic book store but would honestly rather spend his day sitting in front of his computer screen, as that is the kind of nerd he considers himself to be. His main reason for working at the store is to keep an eye on his adopted brother, Christmas. Growing up smarter than all of his peers, and having a funny sounding voice ensured that he was fairly lonely most of his life. He makes up for that now by surrounding himself with like minded peers online and at game nights. When the going gets tough, LT is the man to have on your side, especially if he has internet connection.

Christmas is easily the heart of everyone that works at the comic book store. Being raised on comics, he has an appreciation and love for the characters (especially his favorite, Mr. Mighty Might) more than any of the others.  After spending most of his life bouncing around foster homes, he was finally adopted by LT's family after the two of them became best friends.  He views the world with a genuine child-like naivety. When things get a little too serious, Christmas tends to revert back to his comics to ground him to reality. And if anyone deserves to find the lost issue of Mr. Mighty Might, it is Christmas.

All nerds.
All nerds.

I'll let them do all the talking since they are good at that and I don't want to write anymore...

It's okay to say he is your new favorite superhero.
It's okay to say he is your new favorite superhero.

Jeremy T. Navarro has been telling stories since he was a kid. As he grew older it went from short stories, to novels, to theater, and eventually to making movies. He has written over 15 short films, two web-series, two stage plays and a stage musical. Jeremy occasionally dabbles in acting as well to critical acclaim. The films he has been involved in have won several awards in a broad range of categories. His most recent film "Brush" has been very well received in the festival circuit. He is also a lifelong nerd and avid Superman fan, so much so that he even named his son Clark.

Jessica Wise has been a passionate performer and lover of all things creative since she was a young child. With roots in musical theater, she pursued her passion for performing at the collegiate level. It was at Southeastern University where she was first introduced to film making and a new creative passion was born. Since then she has collaborated on many local films in front of and behind the camera. She is an accomplished make-up artist, costumer, and an award winning actress. With her varied skill set, knowledge of film making and innate leadership capabilities, producing was the natural next step in her creative journey.

Brandon David Hyde is a young, emerging filmmaker who began his career by making short films and documentaries. With roots in the photography world, Brandon attended Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL and received his 4-year bachelor's degree in Film Studies in 2009. During this time, he also attended Los Angeles Film Studies Center in Los Angeles for a condensed one-semester film school. After graduation, Brandon and his wife started a small production company specializing in wedding cinema and small commercials in Tampa, FL. From there, he has continued to grow and learn. He currently works on music videos, documentaries, short films and feature films. This will be his third feature film.

Angelo Gines Jr, is no stranger to the world of entertainment. Since he was a child, the writer, penciler and co-creator of independent comic "Hardcore Luchador," has always been in love with storytelling through art. A graduate of the Art Institute of Tampa with a Bachelors from the Media Arts and Animation program, Angelo has skills in not just hand-drawn and hand-rendered art, but is talented in everything from Visual Effects to 3D animation to CGI to video game development. Angelo has also interned with Art Monkey Studios as well, doing lettering for Marvel Comics, and was a staple in the Tampa Bay Art Scene for years, presenting at top art shows in Tampa including, Square One, Canvas, Kick Start My Art, The Skate Park of Tampa, and The Bricks in Ybor.

While $175,000 might seem like a lot of money, it is considered a micro-budget in Hollywood standards. This is the minimum we need to be able to create the movie we want to share with you. Of course, I won't be sad if we go above and beyond our goal, which will allow us to do cooler things and maybe hire some famous actors.

Since this is your money you are donating, I am sure you are curious as to where it all goes. As LT says in the main video, there are a lot of places the money needs to go. Here is a breakdown of the budget in a pretty pie chart:

Now I want pie. Multicolored pie cut up in strange sized slices.
Now I want pie. Multicolored pie cut up in strange sized slices.
Is that a question or a statement? You decide!
Is that a question or a statement? You decide!

There are a lot of ways to find finances for movies, so why did we choose Kickstarter? That is a great question, you curious person, you. The bottom line comes down to what I like to call the "4 F's" (which I may or may not have just made up on the spot): FUNDING, FREEDOM, FUTURE and FUN.

In its simplest form, what I mean is that we are not under the thumb of another larger production company who gets to control what we do (rightfully so, it is their money). By raising the money ourselves, we get to tell the kind of story we want to tell, which may not fit in your typical superhero format, which we have all seen done a dozen times. We are in control of our story, our casting, our edits, and so on. Also important is that we own all the rights to everything in the film, so when it is super successful and makes mega millions, the studio can't fire us and make a sequel (or reboot it) to their own desires. We get to create the bigger picture that we want to. And all those mega millions we make will go back to our production company which will, in turn, go to funding sequels and potential spin-offs. And you get to say you helped us get there, so it's a win/win for everyone.

Did that cover the 4 F's? I don't really know. Like I said, I just made that up on the spot.

Don't leave yet.
Don't leave yet.

Thank you so much for donating and sharing! I love you! Yeah, I said it. You don't have to say it back. Let's not make it weird.

Oh, also we are proud to be kicking it forward once we make this film. Learn more about it at kickingitforward.org

Okay, bye.

He's so cute.

Risks and challenges

With any feature film there are always risks and challenges that will arise. These complications range anywhere from a location backs out, an actor quits, the director breaks his foot, it rains everyday in Tampa, etc... The nice thing is that this story can be easily adjusted to meet any new problem that could arise. The locations are general enough that one store could be substituted for another, one house could be replaced by another, and there are no shortage of actors or crew members looking for work either.

The biggest problem that could arise in this film is running out of money. I have carefully calculated the budget, and added an emergency fund, but you never can control if we accidentally run over the camera and have to buy a new one, or run over the directors foot and we lose two days because he is in the hospital, or if everyone eats way more than expected and we have to spend more money to feed them. This problem gets resolved through various production companies around the Tampa area who have already expressed their interest in helping out in a smaller capacity. They are willing to come on board once there is an audience for this film, and if we are successfully funded, it proves to them there is one out there. So if we need to raise an extra $10,000, we would then work out a business deal with them to get the funds to finish the film. But we are all hoping that never happens so we can be in full control of the film from beginning to end.

The last major challenge is if we become way too popular and "For the Win" is requested at festivals all over the world and we don't have enough money to fly everywhere. I suppose that is a good problem though, so you don't need to worry about that one.
