About this project
A multifunctional scarf that has a secret pocket for stowing any valuables, so that you won't get pickpocketed in a NY Subway or purse snatched by a motobike thief in Cambodia. The beauty of this scarf is that it can be worn traditionally as a single or double wrap around your neck, but also go well beyond that by serving an endless number of intentions. Some of our favorite uses are "sling mode" where you can throw a water bottle, flashlight, or a friendly kitty in while hiking, then unroll it to cover your upper body for warmth when it gets chilly at the top of the Mountain. Lay it out on the beach for a seat because you forgot your towel, or pull it over your head like a hood to block the harmful sun rays beating down. We know you are going to love your Indo-Scarf and we are looking forward to seeing all of your favorite ways and places to wear it. This idea started with two young travelers who had quit their daytime jobs to go and experience Southeast Asia, looking for answers on what to do for the rest of their lives. Although the two were full of passion, wanderlust, and good intentions, they had no idea how to convert their passions into a sustainable future.
Their journey started in Thailand, moved through Vietnam and Cambodia, and finished in Indonesia. After many crazy, exciting, and purely brilliant experiences, it came full circle and found themselves back in the US. However, a funny thing happens when Marketing/Sales majors are exposed to a whole new world: everything seems like an opportunity. This made for exciting conversations and brainstorming sessions on 8 hour bus rides, 12 hour layovers, and calm nights sitting by the pool drinking cheap beer.
One night near the end of their trip in Indonesia in the town of Kuta on Lombok Island, the most productive brainstorming session had taken place while they were sitting with their feet in the hostel pool, drinking Bintang (Indonesian beer that translates to "Star Dust"), when the right idea hit them. They had bought these modified sarongs a couple weeks earlier while hiking volcanoes on the Island of Java that served as a scarf. It was decided that not only would these be a big hit back home, but also could size them just right to make sure that they were the perfect fit for everyone and add a pocket so that the scarf could be more functional (and secure). You are much less likely to get robbed when traveling in a dangerous area if your belongings are wrapped around your neck instead of hanging from your shoulder in a bag. And this definitely beats awkwardly digging in your pants to get to your secret fanny pack.
So once back in the US with that idea burning in the back of their minds it was time to take the first steps. Making several prototypes, and getting the opinions and feedback of friends and family (and many strangers while going about their typical day) brings us to present day. With that accomplished , the next step is placing large orders of fabric and working with high quality sewing shops to ensure that the best possible product is brought to market.
Now you know our story, but it is hard to put into words the type of change instilled in us from that trip. We easily met some of the kindest people who are living in very restrictive and saddening situations coming from such developing parts of the world. Our end goal is to establish a business model that allows us to contribute to the Countries that inspired while also supplying warmth to the world through sexy scarves. This means eventually partnering up with charities dedicated to the advancement of child development and economic stability, as well as outsourced production to achieve maximum authenticity and share in our success. To reach that point we need your help to get the word out about the Indo-Scarf and get our project funded so that we can start revolutionizing the way people think about scarves. Risks and challenges
It is possible that when beginning production/sewing that there could be complications in reaching the level of quality that we are demanding. In order to make sure that this doesn't become a problem we will have a small sample initially produced and then when production is in full swing the first several batches will have multiple levels of quality control to ensure that every piece of fabric, stitch, and zipper is strong and capable of satisfying every customer.
Distribution might be over-complicated early on while in the process of setting up distribution channels. First orders will be shipped through our office for final quality control check and dispersement.
