Our project is a new sixty minute recording of a wide variety of music, some written for two trombones, many not. There is the seed that started the project, Tommy Pederson's Crimson Collup, and six other duets from Tommy.
A lot of the music is simply two old friends playing duets. And a lot of the tunes make use of some interesting new sounds coming from the computer of Mike Lake. He also wrote a new tune for this project, called Devils and Angels. Mike is also featured on Alto trombone!
Sounds on the recording range from the Renaissance, to Bach, Bartok, Jazz, Funk, Latin, and the projects name sake, Fratres, a new take on an Arvo Part composition.
This CD will add to existing repertoire for our instrument, and break some new ground as well. It's going to surprise some at what the trombone is capable of achieving.
It's great music, first and foremost. It just happens to be played by trombones!
Risks and challenges
The making of a new CD comes with many risks, perhaps the biggest for us is financial. So much music today is available free on the internet, that it is hard to get an audience to buy your product. Previously, both Doug and I have completed many recordings. Todays market is so different than in the past, that a crowd fund is one of the few ways to break even on the costs of making a recording. We set our funding goal as low as possible, and it is still a risk. This is the hard part!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
