We have pictures of the concrete bunker (or a piece of it) finished and painted!
Check out Update #3 for another sneak peak at the next item being printed.
Work has begun on the crashed zeppelin terrain (the piece that won the previous round of voting) and this piece will be finished in a lot shorter of time frame compared to the modular bunker.
I am keeping this concept sketch here, as it is for the model that is currently being made.
Tragedy of Progress is a Steampunk Tabletop RPG-Skirmish game which allows players to create custom groups of characters and compete, or sometimes cooperate, with others. Our models are what make us stand out when compared to currently available tabletop miniatures games. We will be offering a selection of 3D printable miniatures players can purchase for a low cost and print themselves, either at home on their own 3D printer, or at a publicly available printer, which can be found in more and more in public libraries.
Players are in complete control of each of their characters, choosing equipment, skills, and ability upgrades as well as additional customization options. These characters are part of the group that will be playing in a multitude of objective based tabletop skirmish battles with other players..
Between battles there is a decision based story system for characters to find rare equipment and rare skills to further customize their characters.
The most important fact about Tragedy of Progress is that the game itself will be free to play for everyone. All the necessary rules, instructions, and items (such as basic dice) will be posted online once the game is complete and will be freely available for download and use.
You might be wondering why we need money if we are going to give away the rules and mechanics. We are looking for support to allow us to hire sculptors and purchase the equipment needed to make our miniatures available.
Our goal is to create an online database with a large selection of miniature files that players may purchase to represent their characters. We are looking to keep the price of these models reasonably priced at around $3.50 each. Players will also be able to purchase add-on packs of weapons, armor, etc. for around 25 cents each. Once a player has purchased a miniature they may return and re download the file to print as many times as they choose.
To keep true to miniature gaming and the desire for customization, we will be creating our miniature files to print disassembled on sprues. This will allow us to create a much higher quality of print on smaller parts of the model. Assembling the miniatures after printing will also allow players to customize their groups to be their own.
All of our files are being created to be as 3D printer friendly as we can possibly make them. With 3D printing being such a fledgling marketplace, our miniatures have built in guides that allow for correct sizing across any device or printing platform. In the long term we, hope to have premade miniature files for different printer such as Ultimaker, Makerbot, Lulzbot, and others that will allow players to get as close as possible to a Download → Click → Print system as we can.
Being tabletop players for most of our lives we enjoy the idea of being able to use the up-and-coming technology of 3D printing to lower the cost of miniatures and allow players to truly create exactly the model they wish for a very low price.
You may have already seen our SAM model (Size Approximation Man) in the first video, but he will come up a few more times before the end. We have been using SAM to correctly scale the size of our terrain and to play test our rules. If successfully funded we will be able to do away with SAM forever and use our high quality miniature models instead
A local artist has began sketching the concept art for the miniatures shown below:
A sculptor friend of ours created a first rough model as a proof of concept for us. Once we have the needed equipment to scan the miniatures, we will begin the process of creating the printable files.
Replacing SAM with high quality miniatures created by sculptors in traditional mediums is the reason we are here on Kickstarter. We will be digitally scanning these models, dissecting them and creating the easy to print 3D files This will allow for much lower costs for the players (well under $100 a group) instead of for hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars for some other miniature games. We want Tragedy of Progress to be a game anyone can play, without having to fear for their bank account.
Depending on the chosen pledge level, you will receive a portion or all of the 3D printable terrain files that we have been, and are continuing to, produce for this Kickstarter. This terrain can be used to enhance the tabletop battlefield for Tragedy of Progress players, as well as many other tabletop games.
Higher pledge levels will allow you to pre-purchase miniatures and allow us the funds to have the models sculpted
As can be seen in the sketch art, the first two groups to be created will be the Nobles and the Abandoned. These two groups represent the oppressors and the oppressed, they are polar opposites and the most fitting to the Tragedy of Progress theme. Examples of other groups include Ex-Military, Outlanders, Steamgineers, and Necrologists to name a few. If we meet our funding goal we will add additional models for some of these other groups. For now we are focusing on the two core groups and getting our requested funding.
Everyone who contributes to the Kickstarter will be given access to the beta release of the rules. We will be running a alpha of the rules that can earn backers additional choices of models when available and a direct line to help us create the game you want to play. More information on the Alpha and how to apply will be available on our website.
Because we did not want to run a Kickstarter that holds nothing but future promises, we have worked to create a series of terrain pieces we will give away upon our campaign success. As the campaign progresses we will add more terrain models.
- Used by military and civilians alike, concrete barriers can be used as impromptu road blocks or as part of a large base structure and will be available in new, worn, and destroyed variants.
Our game is designed to be a quick paced tabletop skirmish game, but also to include many RPG elements for detailed character creation and uniqueness.
Characters will have varied stats of Cognition, Melee, Ranged, Nerves, Awareness and Stamina. As they develop through battles they will earn new skills that will give them new abilities to use or upgrade existing ones. Characters will be able to develop into useful roles for their groups that can include nearly anything. From range support to objective running fodder our goal is to create a no limit system where players can create the exact characters they want.
Keeping game play fast, interesting and including all players as much of the time as possible is an important part of our system.
Tragedy of Progress takes place in a dystopian steam punk world where the population is exploited and abused by rich and government elite. The political system was divided up into a series of city states spread across the land. The local businesses would often barter and buy government seats among themselves and advance their commercial interests ahead of the environment or human rights.
In recent years one of these city states made a discovery they have kept under tight secrecy. They have waged a war against any competing governments and have nearly claimed complete control of the territories. This war has forced any other government to focus on war productions and weapon innovation in an attempt to defend themselves against this nearly unstoppable war machine.
The new regime has been known only as “The Government”. Once they have occupied a new city state, They quickly create local outposts and begin recruiting individuals for their military. Dissonance is quickly reacted to and eliminated
Although who is in control does not change the day to day life of the population, the conflict and disarray has opened the door for rebel groups. Many different kinds of people, and for many different reason, are taking arms against ruling factions and attempting to cut out a better position for themselves amidst the war and chaos.
As mentioned before in our campaign we will focus on attempting to reach our listed funding goal first. If we are able to raise our funding goal this will allow us to become an organized business instead of a group of people working on their idea in their spare time. It will allow us to purchase the equipment (namely an additional 3D printer and a 3D scanner) and to hire sculptors and artists that will bring our game to life.
Q : Will I be able to purchase pre-printed terrain directly from Tragedy of Progress because I do not have a 3D Printer yet.
A : Yes. This will be an option we will make available, however it is not inline with our ultimate goals. Producing and shipping miniatures and terrain from us will not give the cost savings in miniature gaming we are looking for. We do not have the production capabilities of traditional manufacturing and the amount of time needed to do this will increase the cost.
Q : What about purchasing pre-printed miniatures.
A : No. We do not want to offer this as a pledge level because we want to see the finished product before we sell it. We do not want to ship less than ideal models to our backers and I am sure many of you would not want to receive it. Once our models are complete and available for digital download we will look at an option in our online store that will allow people to order printed models to be shipped to them.
Q: How common are public 3D Printers?
A : They are becoming more and more common. Recently a friend of ours found this interactive map showing the locations of publicly available 3D printers. We figure this is the perfect thing to share here :
If anyone knows of printers that are not already on this map, please consider sending Amanda a message at the bottom of the page and help update this resource.
You have made it to the end of the Tragedy of Progress page. Thank you for reading through our work and for your consideration of support. As a reward please enjoy this teaser trailer.
Risks and challenges
The largest concern for Tragedy of Progress is the printing resolution of many of the FDM 3D printers. We have purposefully used this style of printer to ensure all of our current terrain will be printable without issues or quality loss. As 3D printing technology advances, the issues with resolution will become less and less of a concern.
The second risk we face is the time needed to finalize and release our rules and models. We have been working on our game system since 2012, but we have always had to do so in our spare time from our regular jobs. We have all the major components completed such as; group creation, leveling, movements, combat, skill choices, story progression, etc, however we have fine detailing, balancing and creating a combined rule book to complete. If our Kickstarter is successful enough to have one of us become a full time employee for the company this will not be an issue. If not we may require extra time to ensure the game we release is what we want it to be.
The models are going to be commissioned to sculptors and scanned into a digital format. We are allowing 8 months of time from the end of the campaign to uploading the digital files to ensure there is no rush for the deadline and we can receive the highest quality of work. This is not really a risk, but we do wish to include realistic delivery times to our backers. If the models are done before this timeline we will work to release them early.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
