About this project

The Sweatshop Social, presented by Bags for the People(www.bagsforthepeople.org), takes place the last Monday of every month, except December, at 3rd Ward(www.3rdward.com) in Brooklyn, NY.

At the event, Bags for the People provides the equipment, materials, and instruction necessary to guide the general public through the reusable bag making process. Participants learn how to use a sewing machine and how to construct a reusable bag made from repurposed materials. Participants are also encouraged to express themselves creatively throughout the process.

To help facilitate fun, creativity, dialogue, and community, Bags for the People also supplies refreshments and entertainment creating a comfortable atmosphere for participants to socialize and work together on a common positive environmental action.

Our goal is to have over 1000 New York City residents make their own reusable bag as well one to donate to a local Greenmarket at our Sweatshop Socials over one calendar year. If our goal is met, we will have effectively helped reduce the amount of plastic bags used and discarded in the city, saved an abundance of scrap fabric from the overflowing local landfills, and taught many the invaluable skill of sewing.

The money we hope to raise with Kickstarter will be for refreshments, entertainment, supplies, transportation, marketing, and instruction for the Sweatshop Socials over the course of one calendar year(11 workshops).
