What is special about our software?
Before now, learning applications were just helpers that supported you with language learning. You had to take time and force yourself to learn new words. We, the students of Munich University have decided to change that and set our focus on the development of smart applications that use your subconscious mind, allow you to memorize words faster and help you to save your time.
Our approach is completely different from anything you have ever seen. This application is based on research about "How Our Brain Stores Information" and turns your PC into your personal trainer. You do not need to take time or force yourself to learn; the learning process happens when you are going about your life and doing the things you normally do, like working, checking social sites, or watching a movie.
How does it work?
It's different from anything you've tried in the past, both in terms of what you're learning, and how you're learning it. The vocabulary training consists of didactic cards that appear on your screen from time to time. You do not need to spend extra time and effort for learning, the learning process happens while you are doing your usual things: just during your work or surfing social networks. You can define appearing intervals by yourself.
The whole process takes about 5 seconds, and you don't have to force yourself to learn! We prepared for you illustrated word lists with most commonly used words with pronunciations in 8 different languages. With our application, you will be able to learn the list of words necessary to understand 60% of the information in a foreign language in less than three months without spending extra time for learning! Automatic learning This software allows you to learn new words in a foreign language much faster than with standard learn technics. When the PopUp window appears, it focuses your attention automatically on it, because:
- You have to press the button to see the translation. This increases the learning effect rapidly because you have to focus your whole attention on the new word for few seconds
- Through association with words in the sentence, your brain remembers several words at once and learns information faster.
According to theory and science of memory, we need to repeat the word about 7 times at some intervals. In this way, we only need to spend 35 seconds to learn a new word, and it will be stored in your long-term memory. Over an 8-hour period of surfing the web or working on your PC, you can learn 10 new words, so you should be able to pick up 60% of a foreign language in less than two months.
More on Subconscious Learning
Learnee is based on real-life information storage techniques, helping you to pick up a foreign language in the same automatic, intuitive way that you picked up your native language. Fundamentally associative, human memory works through unconscious learning (passive learning: you acquire knowledge of new information through exposure) and explicit learning (active learning: you seek out the structure of any information that is presented to them), so our application involves both those types of memorization. It is easier to remember new information if it is associated with previously acquired knowledge that is already firmly anchored in memory. The more meaningful the association, the more effective it will help remember.
When a new word appears on the screen, your brain recognizes the colorful picture at first, and you automatically know what it is. Then you see the "grammatical part" – how the word is written down and can hear the right pronunciation. After you press the button, you learn unconsciously how to use this word in a sentence and learn other words too. Should you not press the button to see the translation of a word, your brain will still learn the new word unconsciously with a picture association.
Yes, it is possible to learn a new language within 50 days.
The Oxford English Corpus enables us to assess the number of English words in current use. Analyzing all types of texts, ranging from literary works to tabloid press, as well as internet chats, e-mail messages, and blogs, researchers at Oxford found that about 75% of analyzed texts in English consisted of 1,000 words. Read more about the research.
We conducted similar research, creating word lists out of the most common words, which should serve as a good jumping off point to start learning any language. You can easily learn about 500 new words in less than 3 months with our application! On this graphic, you can see that coverage of 75% of English text is made up of only 1000 unique words. We analyzed several books and prepared wordlists with 500 of the most used words for you. With this word list, you will be able to understand about 50% of the information in a foreign language.
Create your own vocabulary and use thematic word lists
You can also create your own unique vocabulary lists. Just enter the new word, translation, and usage example in the table. Our plan is to create several themed vocabulary lists for business, traveling, studying, visiting a doctor, going to restaurants, and other important activities.
What We Need & What You Get
Right now, we have come to you, for help raising $5000. These funds are going to cover:
- the costs of completing development on Learnee by perfecting our user interface
- adding new languages, creating vocabulary lists, adding usage examples
- adding pronunciation keys
- and creating picture examples
To start out, we will support English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Russian, but long-term we want to support many more languages. Your contributions will make our growth possible. We thank you for your time and support!
Risks and challenges
The software is almost 70% ready. We can give you a guarantee only for tested operating systems. That's why we give you 2 years guarantee and support for our software, it is more than enough to learn a foreign language :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
