We are currently rushing for climate disaster within less than a century…
Over one billion people live in extreme poverty, earning below $ 1 per day…
Meanwhile, people in the rich world consume resources roughly corresponding to what 3 planet Earths could provide!
Would you like to play a game to save the world?
My name is Dr. Jon-Erik Dahlin. I am a university lecturer, teaching sustainable development for engineering students at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. I created the board game DILEMMA to create awareness about sustainable development issues. This is my way of contributing to a better world.
Name: Jon-Erik Dahlin
Age: 38 years
Education: Ph.D. in Plasma Physics (2006), M.Sc. in Engineering Physic (2001)
Favourite quote: “Sustainable Development is the prospect of people being able to go skiing one hundred years from now” – one of my students
I have used various board games in my classroom for many years, and tested various prototypes of the DILEMMA board game for over a year. It is a great tool for learning how to deal with sustainability. And it is fun to play board games in the classroom as well!!
The DILEMMA board game
When you play DILEMMA, you will encounter tricky questions and challenging dilemmas. The questions trial your knowledge and understanding – like a quiz! And the dilemmas test your ability to put forward strong arguments for a certain position.
While playing DILEMMA, you learn about our world and about the tasks that can contribute to a more sustainable development – and you have fun with your friends on the same time!
Pledge the minimum (or more)
For the minimum of 10 SEK = just $ 1 you can be part of the movement to save the world by playing games! Like us on facebook (www.facebook.com/boardgamedilemma/), go to the website (www.jonerikdahlin.com/dilemma) - and please, spread the word about this in all the ways you can!!
Sponsor a High School or University
The DILEMMA board game is intended for being used in the classroom. I have used the prototype in several courses and students love it!
Pledge $ 300 to sponsor a High School or University to receive one full classroom package including 8 game boxes (playable for up to 40 students at the same time). It will be decided by lottery which school or university that will receive this reward. If you're a resource-constrained teacher who would like to be added to this list, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject "I'm a teacher!"
I have spent the last year developing the DILEMMA board game, manufacturing and testing several prototypes to get to what you see today. I am currently working on refining the final design in cooperation with an experienced designer. I have also established relationships with manufacturing partners for the DILEMMA board game and now I need your support to help make it a reality!
- November/December 2015: KickStarter campaign!
- January 2016: Final design and final testing
- February 2016: Designs sent to manufacturer, proofing
- February/March 2016: Production for KickStarter + sponsors
- April 2016: Review and full production, PRODUCT RELEASE
Risks and challenges
This project will take the board game DILEMMA over the ‘valley of death’, from being a neat prototype that I produced from my own pocket money to a product that may be used in classrooms all over the world.
I have produced three prototypes of the game and tested the game mechanics from the inside out with over 1,000 test subjects – i.e. the students on my classes. For each prototype generation I have made the necessary adjustments and I am now confident that I have a strong product. Finally, I printed a few demonstration copies for an international conference that was held in Vancouver, Canada earlier this year – to see and hear the response from university lecturer colleagues from all around the world. The response was extremely good and I am now ready to go into full scale production!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
