About

This project will allow the first production-scale run of this kind of toys (figurines).

One day I was hunting for a present for my niece's birthday. She loves to play with lots of little figurines. I assumed I could go to the toy store and buy a big bucket of them. The store only had a bucket of "Army Guys". Nothing remotely appealing for girls. I defaulted to a package of twelve little pandas. She liked them OK enough, but I knew there must be something out there that would hit the mark a little better.

I found a few figurines on sale that were "antiques" from the 50's and 60's. The company (100 Dolls Co) had seemingly gone out of business and no one is currently producing them.

Now I have enough for my niece, but what about all the other nieces in the world?  Someone should be making these or something similar for girls like her. Here is another of our initial designs. Pink and ballerinas are just a beginning. Girls Town is full of characters - yes, teachers and kids and policemen and policewomen, maybe a pet here and there, and so on.

Here is what a playmat may look like. We have a lot of ideas, should the project be funded ... Different sets are possible and even boys might want to play with these in the end! ;-)

This project will fund the design of new figurines (matching them with playmats to encourage creative thinking and imagination), computer rendering for mold manufacturing, and modest-scale production (US based preferably) using plastic injection molding or similar technique such as to honor the rewards.

Risks and challenges

Risks include:

Production Delays
Quality Concerns
Cost Overruns
Incomplete Orders
Shipping Errors

As a management consultant at a world-class consulting firm, I am highly trained in project planning, project management, process design, quality control, and organizational design. My partner is highly skilled in practical implementation of manufacturing flow as well as interfacing with manufacturers.

We interviewed and received price quotes from multiple injection-molding companies (we also looked at using recycled materials). I evaluated them on their past experience, their capabilities, their likelihood of fulfillment, their professionalism, and their interest in the project.

As the majority of the risks above are dependent on the fulfillment by the manufacturing contractor, it's critical that I establish their ability to perform, as well as establish project milestones, and continuously measure them against those milestones.

I will oversee quality control by personally inspecting the production run results (perhaps in batches of 2,000 - 5,000 figurines at a time). I will also work with the contractor to establish a process for fulfillment through shipping channels that stay within the bounds of cost expectations and fully leverage the tools provided by KickStarter and Amazon to manage contributions and rewards.

In the event that there are production or shipping delays, I will issue a notice to all contributors on a biweekly basis updating them to the current status of their award delivery until they receive it. For delays greater than six weeks, contributors will receive five additional figurines.

In the event that due to cost overruns I am unable to completely fulfill all orders with contributions, I will personally pay to cover rewards or refunds up to a total amount of $4,500 for the entire project. If there are any award shortages above that amount, we will seek private investment to purchase the rights for further production, and use the proceeds to provide rewards or refunds to all unfulfilled contributors.
