About

Monbattle is a monster collection RPG that reduces the need for mindless grinding. 

The game is a free-to-play (FTP) online RPG playable for PC/MAC with the Chrome Web Browser and Firefox. We are also developing a version for smartphones.

 What? Free-to-play? 

Don't worry, we look up to Hearthstone, DOTA2 and Team Fortress 2 as games that do FTP right. We strive to make FTP enhance the gameplay for players, rather than deter them. 

Monbattle has two objectives:

1) Make a Online Monster Collection RPG that feels strategic from the start. We wanted to make a game in this genre that reduced the amount of mindless grinding. 

I love monster collection RPGs. But wanted to do less of this:

So we set to make a monster collection RPG that felt strategic from the start. This involved combining elements from rogue-likes and trading card game mechanics.

2) Support the indie artists that make this game possible.

People remember games for their characters and art. Yet many don't know who designed and created that art. Monbattle will foster a stronger connection between the artists and players. 

We allow all players to sort monsters by artist in game, and run livestreams showing our artist's creative process. We think this will result in a more important gaming experience:

Monbattle's Origins

I've played a lot of RPGs, from Pokemon to Final Fantasy. And loved the monster collection/capture genre most. Especially ones that let you play online with others.

Then I became obsessed with Trading Card Games, and in particular: Yu-Gi-Oh. These games were built from the ground up to feel strategic. They made you solve a puzzle every game. This was when the idea for Monbattle began:

The first version of Monbattle was made on the back of my old business cards. I played it with everyone I saw. And after it felt right, we began working on the video game.

- The first version had 3 classes: the square guy, the circle guy, and the triangle guy, each with unique abilities:

This game is influenced by my favourite childhood games: Pokemon and Digimon. 

However, the monster collection/capture genre hasn't changed much since Pokemon defined the genre back in the early 90s. 

When you play Monbattle, it should feel familiar yet refreshing.

 Monbattle is turn based. Battles can be up to 4 vs. 4. 

How the battle system works

  • Instead of allowing each one of your monsters to attack each turn, you decide, based on action points, which monster should attack:

  • Decisions, not dexterity, determine whether you win or lose

Monbattle features an in-battle evolution system. We call it "Ascension". Ascending allows you to gain access to different abilities.

- Ascension in battle is temporary. This is because each battle goes through a cycle like in popular MOBAs like League of Legends or DOTA2. This makes the player decide, when does it make sense to ascend?

Monbattle features a system that penalizes you from using one monster too much:

  • Repeately using the same unit will make it fatigue, making it less effective
  • Knowing when to rest your monsters is paramount to being victorious

Your monsters can be taught new abilities as you progress in the game. Deciding on which abilities to equip is paramount to victory. 

Abilities can heal you, buff your team, and inflicting status ailments to opponents. Many of the abilities are specific to certain classes of monsters:

Community is very important to us. That's why we built a guild system. 

  • Once you've joined a guild, you can fight in raid stages to earn raid points which determine what raid rewards you get.

  • Progressively more challenging battles: raid battles are divided into stages with different enemies. Each time you beat a stage, the monsters get tougher.

 - Your total raid points will be tallied and you will be ranked against every other player and guild

- Fight your way to the top of the rankings to earn raid exclusive rewards including abilities and new monsters

The story was inspired by my love of the Pokemon adventure manga and post disaster movies. Monbattle tells the following story:

- Then one day, a vortex opened, and monsters mysteriously began attacking!

- You take control a "Faye", a girl who mysteriously has the ability to control some of the monsters attacking earth. 

- Your mission is to defend Earth against the monster invasion... and to find out the true origins of the attacks.

SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

- Dekar, is a member of the military and relies on his sniper skills to defend civilians against the waves of monster attacks.

- Korona, another person that has the ability to control the invading monsters. Not much is known about her. She is known to be extreme in her actions.

- Referred to only as "The Judge". The people attribute the invasion by the monsters to him/her/it. You are trying to track him down.

With Monbattle, we wanted to make an online RPG in which the community can directly impact the game on an ongoing basis, even after the kickstarter is over:

Why pitch to investors/publishers when we can let players decide for themselves? 

We didn't want to run a kickstarter until we already had the game in a playable state. What you see in the videos is a working version of the game. This campaign is more of a kick-finisher. 

Our Approach to FREE TO PLAY:

It's 2015, and a game like Monbattle, isn't going to work unless its free-to-play. 

So we wanted to do free-to-play right. 

In designing the monetization system, we drew inspiration from Hearthstone, Team Fortress 2, DOTA2 and League of Legends. That means:

- You can earn all of the currency in the game without paying

- You should never feel forced to pay to play the game 

ARENA OF SAVIORS

- By backing us at the GELATO tier, you will have the choice of preserving your team in the "Arena of Saviors" event area.

- After the game opens up, send us your team of 4 monsters with the desired abilities equipped, and we will make an event stage that can be accessed by all players.

- Your 4 monsters will proudly display your name in their names. (Ie. AlexM's Fulmo)

- Other players will then be able to battle against your party of 4 monsters.

We have a long term vision for Monbattle. When you back us, you are saying you want Monbattle to allow the community to directly contribute to future content. We think the user generated content model is amazing. 

THE BASE GAME 

We are 70% of the way to shipping the one player game and raid battles. The money will help us finish the game. 

A NEW AND IMPROVED LEVELING SYSTEM

We have been thinking of changing up the leveling system in Monbattle. With the new system, the player will have much more freedom to customize the growth of his/her monsters. We've been thinking about this for quite some time, so we really hope to put it in. 

MORE STORY, MORE GAME CONTENT + EASTER EGGS + ;)

We have a deep story post disaster story planned for Monbattle, and this would help our writer get the core story out much much faster. The money would also go towards getting more artwork done to compliment the storytelling. Oh, did we mentioned we love easter eggs, especially about that certain other franchise that's globally successful in this genre?

  • 20 new monsters, which will open up the game to more strategies. 

 USER GENERATED CONTENT PLATFORM 

  • Community and user generated content are very important to us. And what better way than to allow the players to continously influence how the game is made?

We'll allow the community to submit their own designs/voice work/music to the game. This platform allows us to curate the content more efficiently. 

 REVAMP THE UI 

  • We'll hire a UI designer to revamp the UI to make it even more efficient for you as the player to navigate the game. 

To be announced soon. But you can expect some bad ass boss fights. 

 Release PvP gameplay for Monbattle

  • Yep, this was planned from the start, but it was just too big to do with the savings we had left...
  • We have been wanting to get this out, but just don't have the cash to make it happen as it will require a tremendous amount more development time.
  • If you support us here, we'll make sure to give you one heck of a PvP. 

 MOBILE Version!

  • We take Monbattle mobile baby! The reason this is such a high ask is because we didn't design the game to work on mobile initially due to our lack of expertise. We would need to hire someone full time who has experience with mobile, in order to accomplish this goal, and that will cost us way more than we have now. 

Unlike many kickstarter campaigns, Monbattle is already 70% of the way to being shipped. We wanted to prove that we could make the game, before asking for any money.

This is our commitment to you:

- We will be as transparent as we can to give you progress on Monbattle throughout the campaign and after the fact. To further prove this, we will be streaming during the kickstarter, and answering any questions live. We will also be putting updates as the campaign progresses

-  We will have a game that is playable in one form or another. All the gameplay that you see in the video is from a playable build of the game. 

Some ask, is $9,000 enough to complete this game? We wanted to ask for only the bare minimum to get this game to release. We are extremely resourceful with our money. 

Plus, we are 70% of the way to shipping the game. 

We will use the money for:

  • Programmer for development! (50%) To fund the completion of Monbattle over an approximate three-month period. This includes putting in the final game mechanics related changes. 
  • Regular business expenses (10%) including office supplies. 
  • Hiring more passiontate creatives! (30%) Making a video game requires the combined efforts of writers, musicians, monster designers, character designers, environment designers and animators. We hope to bring on and feature more creatives to help ship the game, and to showcase their creativity in the process.
  • Kickstarter costs/transaction fees! (~10%) To pay for the Kickstarter fees and Backer Rewards themselves.

Risks and challenges

One risk is that we might not be able to accommodate a massive influx of players when the game launches its early access. Servers are finicky things and can break in unpredictable ways when strained.

Even though we've done some testing, it's often difficult to see what will go wrong until the actual load hits. Fortunately, we have plans in place to purchase more server space.
