UPDATE: Stopping the Kickstarter Project
So we have decided to stop our Kickstarter campaign for the time being. We launched our game on Kickstarter early in development because we wanted to involve you, the community, in the design of Deozoa. With over $13,000 raised and 300+ loyal backers, we think Kickstarter has been an incredible success in building a community. You have made some amazing suggestions that we feel will really make Deozoa a lot more fun to play! But those changes also drastically affect some of the design choices and funding estimates. With a new battle animation style, it now looks like we could complete Deozoa at a fraction of the initial estimate. Rather than immediately relaunch with this update, we have decided to step back and implement a lot of changes that have been suggested. Our goal is to get a functional prototype for you to mess around with before we attempt to kickstart this project again. Your input into this project has been immensely valuable, and we ask you to join the game development on the forums.
[PLEASE NOTE! The battle is still very much in progress. We are going to change them from the chibi style to a 2D pixel sprite style, more along the lines of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. Please scroll down to FAQs at the bottom of the page to read more.]
Deozoa is a monster catching video game combining the rich storytelling of an RPG with the combat system of a turn based strategy. As you explore through the world you will discover and capture over 100 monsters called Deozoa. Unlike other monster games, your 11 playable human characters battle side by side with their Deozoa to fight their way to victory.
Our number one priority is to build an exciting, high quality RPG that is unique and fresh. Our game will boast:
- One time game purchase for all monsters, characters, and story. The game will be developed for iOS (iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch) and Android (phone and tablet), with an subsequent release to PC, Mac, Linux, and Ouya.
- DRM-free. When you buy the game, all of your data will belong to you.
- Help shape the game: One thing we are excited about is making the game a little more community driven. We will have opportunities for you to share your monster creations and submit them to contests to get them included in the game. Ignis Studios will still have a final say on the game development because we want to create a consistent world and style, but we love hearing your ideas and are excited to build a place where we can share and build this together.
- Capture and befriend over 100 monsters: Each teammate can be assigned one Deozoa to fight with them on the battlefield.
- Evolve your Deozoa: Like animals that grow from baby to adult, all of our Deozoa will grow into a new form as they mature. There are typically two to three monsters per family.
- Recruit 10 characters to your team: As you progress through the story, you will encounter 10 available warriors looking for an adventure. Determine the best combination of abilities to give yourself an edge on the battlefield.
Level up and upgrade human classes: There are 10 classes of human warriors to battle, each with their own unique stats and strengths. As enemies get tougher and the heroes get stronger, every class can develop into an advanced form for stat boosts.
- Use the elements to your advantage: There are 12 elements that all Deozoa and attacks fall into. Every element will have strengths and weaknesses against other elements, making each battle unique and challenging.
- Fight in a free-form battling system: Position 6 teammates with an open movement system unrestrained by a grid. The size of a unit can block enemies’ movement to redirect their attacks, protect weaker units, and form a front line.
- Rich RPG storyline: Unlike casual games, you will explore through a fun RPG story with an expected eight hours of gameplay in a single play through.
We have done a lot of work but we still have a long way to go. We have already designed over 50 monsters, developed the story, characters, and style of the world, but there is still a lot to do. We need to hire artists to help draw all the human characters, monsters, and backgrounds. We also have to develop the world’s environment for battling, as well as animate over 100 monsters and 25 human characters.
If we make more than our goal, our first goal would be to make and animate more Deozoa. We would also love to include more side quests, art for upgraded human classes, high quality animated cutscenes to enrich the story, and original music composed by local Austin musicians.
Kickstarter is an all or nothing effort. We need to hit our goal of $78,000 to make this dream a reality. But with your help, we believe that we can reach it.
For a $1 pledge, get access to a backer only forum for latest updates and for helping us come up with items, Deozoa names, stats, backstories, and more! There will also be a place for you to submit your own monster ideas, sketches, and fan art! If we update anything new, you'll be the first to know!
For $5, you get access to the forums plus three wallpapers for your desktop!
For $10, you all the above as well as three stickable stickers, in all their stickiness, to show your support for Deozoa.
For $15, you get the wallpapers, stickers, and the finished game with all 100+ unlocked monsters. The game will be released for iOS and Android, with a subsequent release to PC, Mac, Linux, and Ouya.
For $30, you get all of the above, plus three unlocked classes for your main character at the start of the game! The classes include a Pirate, Barbarian, and Assassin (unique to the main character only!).

For $75, you get everything above plus two exclusive Deozoa, released only to Kickstarter backers! Each time you start the game, Rayang, the light dragon, and Luyin, the shadow dragon, will be automatically added to your team!
Plus, instead of getting one poster, you will get two of your choice!

For $150, you get all the above, plus the opportunity to be a beta tester! Be one of the first ones to play the game and help us work out the bugs so we build the highest quality game we can! Please choose between being an iOS, Android, or Windows/Mac/Linux beta tester.
For $350 or above, you get all the above (except for the beta tester) and the chance to be a non-playable character! Submit your photo and our artist will draw you as a shop owner, barkeep, innkeeper, a townsperson, or an enemy boss! We get to decide who to place you as, but we will submit your sketch to you for approval before it goes into the game.
For $650 or more, you will receive everything above (except for the beta tester) plus 8" x 12" framed giclee cutscene, signed by the team to thank you for your contribution. Plus you will get an invitation to the launch party (Please add $30 for shipping outside the US & Canada. Must be able to travel to and provide own accommodation in Austin, TX.)
For $1,500 or more, you will get all the above, plus instead of becoming a non-playable character, you will be made into a playable main character. You send us a photo (or describe an awesome warrior idea) and let us know what class you want your character to be. We will send one sketch for your approval before finalizing the drawing. (Note: Custom classes will not apply to your character. We can implement your favorite colors and weapon, but we will not draw anything inappropriate.)
For $3,500 or more, you will get all the above (including the playable character instead of the NPC) plus you are named in game as an Associate Producer. Plus, we'll take you out to dinner in downtown Austin. An evening spent with us is time well spent. You know it's true. Or not. You don't know us yet. But we're cool. At least our dog thinks so. (Must be able to travel and provide own accommodation in Austin, TX.)
For $10,000, you will get all the above, plus you are named in game as the sole Executive Producer. In addition to all of that, we'll take you out to dinner in downtown Austin. Or we can go look at ducks. Lauren prefers the duck option, but it's your call.
For anyone who wants to give more than $10,000, please message us and we'll figure out an appropriately awesome reward for you!
Note: For all those who give more than $150 and really want to be a beta tester, please contact us.

Thank you for your support!
Pokemon is typically 1v1 monster battle (sometimes 2v2) with not much of a plot besides someone evil is doing something bad. You also travel around the world as a 10 year old and your goal is to get all gym badges and beat the elite four.
With Deozoa, although we do have elements and monsters that evolve, we are trying to take a new approach to the monster catching genre. You are a 20 year old soldier that travels the world as a hired mercenary. You will be able to recruit 11 other characters, all of which are different classes and have different abilities. Each person is paired with one monster and they are thought of like a team. In addition to the monsters evolving, your human characters will upgrade too into stronger classes.
On the battlefield, each humans fight alongside their monster and they combine their strengths, skills, and weaknesses. Instead of just facing off, you have to move around and strategically place yourself on the map in order to protect your weaker units and attack the enemy.
We really think it will be a unique and exciting new concept that has not been done before. We get a lot of people telling us that it is a Pokemon clone. We understand that, and honestly, are honored that people like the game when the bar has been set so high by Pokemon. But we really hope to present a fresh adventure for the gamer.
Unfortunately, no. The scope of the game will be much bigger than a typical browser based game. We would like to integrate some Facebook connectivity, so you can still interact with your friends through the game. But everything will run much more smoothly as a native app on whatever system you are on.
That is really the goal. But all the app stores work differently and can be very restrictive. For Kickstarter backers, you will get your choice of iOS or Android in addition to a computer version. Ideally, the game can be connected across all platforms, but we are still looking into how to make that work.
We have heard that from a few people now, and want to reassure everyone that the battle style is not set in stone.
We are going to change the chibi style that you see in the battle to a more classic, 2D pixelated sprite style. It will be more along the lines of Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. We think this is a better approach and fits the game's style a lot more.
Console gaming is very hard and expensive for the indie game studio to break into. So for the time being, we are just going to focus on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, and Ouya.
We sure hope so! Right now the $78,000 covers just the story mode of the game. If we make more than our goal, PvP will be very high on the to do list.
You will explore around the world much like Final Fantasy Tactics where you are on a large map and jump on hotspots between cities. There will be 2 to 6 spots between cities, so there will be plenty of chances for encounters and battle.
Each human and monster are a unit and depending on the Deozoa's size, your unit will either be very small or very large. It won't be like some turn based games where you face off against your opponent and not move. You will have to move through a map to clear out all the enemies. So like there will be cases when you can set up a barrier with all the tough guys or try to slip through the enemy lines with the smaller units.
It is a turned based strategy game, but because we wanted a little more natural movement, we do away with the grid restrictions and have you run around in a certain area. Then there are 4 specialized attack areas- a target, a cone area of damage, a line area, and a large circle. So you have to mix and match your attacks to be the most effective.
When you encounter group of wild Deozoa, you can use the flute and build harmony between it and you. So you may encounter a fight with 3 Baby mustachios, a young sevour, and an Adult mustachio (It could be more than just one family - there could be some rare ones thrown into the group). The older the monster, the harder it is to catch.
To catch the Deozoa, we are going to develop a way to tame them with music. It flows with the story with the tree of Eden, and will also be a fun little mini game each time you catch a Deozoa!
Absolutely. In fact, it always bothered us that in other games, if you want a strong team, you have all the adult stages. We are going to figure out a way to make the baby and young stages just as good as the adult, but in a different way.
Absolutely! Your Deozoa can always be swapped out. It would be lame to be stuck with a starter when you catch a rare Deozoa! When you get a new character to join your team, most likely they will come with a monster of their own, but if you have caught extra Deozoa, you can change it.
Yes! We will make Deozoa DRM-free.
Yes! We are using the open source game engine, Moai. It is cross platform and allows rapid game development. Go Moai!
