The Book Bikemobile would exist in the summer months to connect children in our community with books. It is not a lending library, but rather a vehicle to distribute free, quality books to children. Beyond the books, the Book Bike would carry the expertise of librarians and other literacy professionals.
With support from the Agenda for Children and volunteers and working in conjunction with Cambridge’s Summer Food Program, we hope to visit several of 5 parks during the week where free lunch is served. They are Danehy Park, Hoyt Field, Sennot Park, Greene-Rose Heritage Park and Gold Star Mother’s Park. After lunch has been served, the Book Bikemobile and its staff and volunteers would read, lead literacy activities and help children and their families browse and choose books.
Cambridge is flush with resources, wonderful schools, an amazing public library system and fantastic social programs. The Book Bikemobile would be unique in that it goes where the children are in the summer months...parks and playgrounds! Because of the context of “fun and freedom” at such locations, the pressures of reading and the didactic way we approach books during the school year transforms into a more casual experience and excitement. The children’s enthusiasm would be held by the fact they are allowed to choose a book to keep and read whenever and wherever they would like. Instead of looking out for the ice cream truck this summer, look for a trike full of books...The Book Bikemobile!

Risks and challenges
The Book Bikemobile is a work in progress. As we roll out this program please be patient and flexible. While our goal is to hit as many parks in a week as possible, logistics may not allow as many as we hope during our first summer, but we are optimistic. It is a volunteer powered pursuit and we are thrilled to begin this journey!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
