Symetra is a strategy card game for 1-6 players ages 13 & up. A game lasts anywhere between 20 - 120 minutes depending on the number players and the game mode being played.

Symetra as a deck is a study in systems and game mechanics. The deck comprises of 60 unique cards that cover the base elements, emotions and energies found not only in games, but many different traditions of  philosophy, spirituality and divination. A lot of work went into testing and balancing the deck and game symmetrically on many levels to give an original and enlightening gaming experience.

Symetra is easy to pick up and learn in under 10 minutes, but extremely hard to play at a high level (I created the game and am still getting better each time I play!).There are many play modes including teams, draft, short or long games, tournament, solitaire and oracle. Due to this Symetra has an extremely high replay value and no two games are ever the same!

In Symetra players battle for the opportunity to join Symetra, an ascended being who travels between Earth and other worlds. She is recruiting some of the best psychic warriors on Earth to battle a high tech evil on her home planet of Orbworld. It turns out beings from Earth are immune to their weapons, and in return Symetra offers to share her magic, technology and mystical teachings with her champions.

However, she can only take a few back with her, so the challengers must show their skill in wielding Symetra's reality-shaping interfaces. With the energy and intention of a sentient being, these computer cards give the user access to the different elements, emotions and energies of the cosmos at a quantum level and the power to alter them at will!

To win at Symetra a player must have the most energy in their actual energy pool at the end of the game. Players actualize their potential energy by fusing, combining and charging cards in the matrix, which is the board created by the players' cards. Once cards are charged in the matrix, players can use their unique actions to shape their victory. The player with the most actual energy at the end of the game wins and earns the opportunity to travel beyond Earth and fight at Symetra's side!

Think you have what it takes to return to Orbworld with Symetra? Pledge for one of the limited seat Traveler Tournament rewards and if you win you get to create a character with the Game Point team to be included in the upcoming Travelers Set that consists of characters that travel between Earth and Orbworld!

Detailed rule book

The goal of Symetra is to have the most energy (represented by coloured glass beads) in your actual energy pool at the end of the game. Each player starts the game with 3 cards in their hand, 30 energy in their actual pool and 20 energy in their potential pool. Players use their cards to transfer energy from their potential into their actual.

A game lasts a number of cycles determined by the number of players and game mode being played.  Each cycle consists of 3 rounds, and each round consists of each player having 1 turn.

At the start of each cycle each player moves 3 actual energy into the universal, which holds this initial cost for the cycle and any costs paid for card actions. At the end of the cycle each player who has the most total energy on their cards wins, and gets their energy back from the universal into their actual. All other players lose their energy from the universal into their potential.

During your turn you may use any of the following 3 actions in any order, or not at all: 1) fuse a card from your hand into the matrix connected to at least one card, 2) charge any card you control with up to 3 energy from your actual, and 3) use the action on any card you control once per round by paying its cost into the universal.

Card actions can also be used during other players' turns as a re-action to an action (or re-action). When a player re-acts to another action, their action happens first. They may even be able to cancel the other action. If an action is cancelled the cost is not paid and the effects do not happen. Each player in turn order around the play area has an opportunity to re-act to the previous re-action, creating a chain re-action that explodes from the most recently announced action to the last.

There are 3 different card types in Symetra: elements, emotions and energies. Each with a unique icon and energy pattern. There are 3 different polarities of cards in Symetra: positive with a white background and a '+' icon, negative with a black background and a '-' icon, and neutral with a grey background and a '|' icon.

1) To fuse a card, select a card from your hand and place it face up in front of you, check for other players' re-actions, and put it into the matrix connected to another card on at least one side. Once the card is in play check for any affinities or enmities it is fused to, and lock it with 1 energy from your actual.

The affinities and enmities are listed on each card just below the name. Most cards have two affinities and an enmity (which is its opposite, in both principle and game mechanic), but not always. Some cards have no enmities, and some cards, emotions, have affinity with entire polarities of cards. For this reason, emotion cards are the energy hubs of Symetra. Since this cannot be listed on every single non-emotion card, you must be aware that your card has affinity with all emotion cards that it shares polarity with.

For each affinity you fuse your card next to you get to move 1 energy from your potential pool onto that card. For each enmity you fuse your card to, move 1 energy off the other cards into their controller's potential. If you control both enmities, move 1 energy from your potential onto both cards!

2) To charge a card, select 1-3 energy from your actual and separate it from the pool, check for other players' re-actions, and then move the energy onto 1 card you control in the matrix.

3) To use a card action, announce the action and any selections it requires, check for other players' re-actions, re-check to make sure the action and selections are still valid, move the cost from the energy on the card into the universal, and follow the actions instructions.

At the end of each round, each player in turn order gets a final chance to use their card actions that round before moving on to the next.

At the end of the 3rd round of a cycle, the cycle ends. Each player who has the most total energy on all the cards they control wins, and moves their energy in the universal into their actual. The losing players move their energy from the universal into their potential. All players move the energy off their cards into their actual and the cards in the matrix are discarded.

The game ends if there is only 1 player or team left with energy in their actual, or if the pre-determined cycle limit has been reached. After the final cycle the player or team who have the most energy in their actual win!

I like to introduce Symetra with these 6 cards as they are familiar, archetypal opposites from each of the 3 card types (elements, emotions & energies) that also illustrate the core game mechanics of Symetra (cards in hand, affinities & enmities, and actual & potential energy) with each of their unique actions.

We have 3 types of rewards for this campaign: Game Rewards, Art Rewards and three Traveler Tournaments where you can win the chance to create a character to return to Orbworld with Symetra in an upcoming game set.

To pledge for multiple rewards, select a base pledge, then add the totals together (including S&H) for all rewards you would like to receive, and just increase your pledge to cover the difference between your base pledge and the total amount. When the project ends you will be sent a survey, and at that point you can list all the reward levels and quantities you pledged for.

Symetra is also available as an Oracle Deck. The oracle deck replaces some of the game information with oracle information and shows more of the art.

Symetra is an original oracle system based on the different elements, emotions and energies in the cosmos. Symetra symmetrically balances aspects from many traditions of spirituality, divination and philosophy on multiple levels. This creates great breadth and depth of subjective and objective connection and exploration.

The oracle guide booklet includes information on the principles of divination (regardless of system), many card spreads, the steps of doing a reading, detailed interpretation, meditation instructions, learning methods, a solitaire game mode, and a healing visualization using the Symetra cards.

Savvy players who know the card actions and costs can use the oracle deck to play the game while enjoying the full art.

$60,000 = Mobile Version of Symetra

This will be a complete version of Symetra, both game and oracle versions, with all play modes available including online play. The intention is to have it available on both iOs and Android but specs will not be finalized until nearing the stretch goal.

Symetra has a large team of artists and gamers who are involved in the development, production, and promotion of the game.

Game Point's journey began in the spring of 2010 when Justin and I got our badges for GenCon online. We had been designing games off and on for years but had yet to turn any of them into a product for sale. The idea of attending an event full of gamers and industry professionals was really exciting, and we both knew that GenCon was going to be inspiring and fun. We live in a small town in British Columbia, and drove an amazing four days across Canada, moving a friend to Toronto on the way and headed down to Indianapolis through the Ontario border.

Justin, Beholder & Brad at GenCon 2010.
Justin, Beholder & Brad at GenCon 2010.

On day one, we showed up to join the vendors and teachers participating in the Trade day workshops and meetings.  This was our first opportunity to hear from successful designers about what store owners are looking for when they buy games to sell, and the inner working of the industry.  We attended every lecture and workshop on turning a prototype into a solid product ready for sale.  Mike Gray, Owen Stephens and Stan! all gave us pivotal advice that we have already begun putting to use.  We were in the front row of all their workshops and they were gracious enough to answer all the questions we could come up with.

Gencon was an amazing experience, and it is no exaggeration that our week at the con changed both of our lives.  We immediately knew that GenCon was the ideal setting for us to get serious about game design and to launch our products.  Our games are now ready to show the world and we cannot wait to set up our booth. Returning with our own games for sale this coming year is the realization of a dream that we have put a lot of work towards.

Brad and Justin showcasing their games at GottaCon 2014.

Brad Finlayson is the founder of Game Point, and has been working on Symetra, originally called G-Aim Cosmic, since 2003. During this time he has had many people support the game with playtesting, art, business planning and prototype production at the GameCrafter. Symetra is the first completed game for the G-Aim system, although there are many other sets at the prototype stage.

Part of the inspiration for the G-Aim system came from the “Glass Bead Game” which was the focal point of Herman Hesse’s novel “Magister Ludi”.  The Glass Bead Game encompassed and connected all subjects and objects into a game that was not only competitive, but also educating and enlightening. Before reading the novel, Brad already had in mind the plans for a gaming system that integrated roleplaying, tactical tabletop and collectible card games into a modular system that could play any of any type of game and incorporate any idea a player may have. Brad combined this with the principles of the Glass Bead Game and geared the mechanics to reward players who use creativity and lateral thinking in addition to logical, linear thinking.

Up until now the creation and development of Symetra has been entirely volunteered. Having worked on Symetra only during my free time and with all the art, prototyping, planning and production costs coming directly out of my pocket, we at Game Point have reached a point where we need to reach out to the gamers of the world to rise up and help us get enough copies of Symetra printed so that the cost can be reasonable.

We are currently selling the Beta edition of Symetra for $60 to happy customers but we would like to get the cost down to $40, which we can do, but only if we do a large enough print run. Help us get there and shape your fate!

The $12,000 goal of this campaign will be used to produce and ship copies of Symetra and the rewards, and pay the Kickstarter, payment processing and advertising fees.

Risks and challenges

Since Symetra is already complete and thoroughly tested (version 7.x), the main challenges are related to marketing and manufacturing. There is no development or art left to be done other than the new cover art of the Symetra character by Chris Rallis.

Symetra is Game Point Game Systems first published game so our social network is just forming. Getting the word out to potential players is an obstacle we have put a lot of thought into.

We have teamed up with Gamerati who are going to promote Symetra over their large community of gamers. Game Point will also be directly engaging at the main hubs for gaming such as Board Game Geek to increase exposure of Symetra.

You can do us a big favour by sharing our campaign with your friends, family and anyone you know who might find Symetra interesting. You can find all our social media links and newsletter sign up at gamepointcentral.com.

Due to Symetra's unique nature we had to find a manufacturer who was able to print a run within our small company budget with all the custom parts we wanted including 300 glass beads of 6 different colours!

Yes glass beads are heavy, but they are also by far the nicest feeling and looking while playing Symetra. We tested many different materials and shapes for use as energy counters in Symetra and none did the job quite like the glass beads with their substantial mass and refraction of the cards below.

This, combined with the inspiration taken from Herman Hesse's final novel 'the Glass Bead Game' (or Magister Ludi), it was clear that glass beads were the way to go. Now, finding 300 beads of 6 different colours for an affordable price was tougher than expected but we found a manufacturer willing to do a print run within the grasp of Game Point with all the customization we wanted, including a cool holo-foil game box!

The manufacturing process is under way and we are confident that we will be able to deliver a high quality edition of Symetra by September of 2014.
