About this project

Our First Annual Workers Unite Film Festival is scheduled between the 100th anniversary of the success of the "Bread and Roses" strike in Lawrence, MA. the 101st anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, a rallying point for organizing American workers and May Day, the international workers day of unity and celebration. This year we honor the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Workers Education and Labor Studies, based at The City University of NY and The newly AFL-CIO chartered National Taxi Workers Alliance.

Funds from this Kickstarter will help to pay for the costs of the festival and to make it happen this year on a timely schedule. The expenses include the cost of the festival venue, outreach to filmmakers and jurying over 150 films from around the world, marketing to get the public to know about the festival and operational costs of running the three day event. These Kickstarter funds will not only help guarantee that a Workers Unite Film Festival survives, but that it remains as an annual event and grows. We cannot do this without your help.

We seek to join forces with our working brothers and sisters from around the world, both organized in existing unions and currently fighting to organize for their workplace right. We plan to broadcast our stories of struggle and victory to the mainstream media that often pretend that we - the vast majority of the world's population - the 99% - count for far less than the celebrities and corporate titans normally showcased 24/7 by the corporate media machine.

The short clip we have posted - on the "World's Longest Unemployment Line," in NYC this past March 6th, represents only a small part of what we are doing with the festival. As a festival, we are screening classic and new films about workers and their union organizing efforts. As an instigator for a new pro-worker/labor media, we will also reach out to worker and student filmmakers to help produce new films on topics concerning workers' lives. We thank you for wanting to join together with us on this exciting journey.
