We haven't raised as much as we'd hoped, however we haven't given up! We will be rescheduling this campaign. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to stay up to date. Thank you.
WHO IS PRINCE HARVEY?
I grew up in Dominica - a small island in the Caribbean, and moved to New York at 14. I'm a rapper and music producer. I'm an artist. I got big dreams and I just wanna inspire the kids to believe that they can do anything and everything. My music has always responded to political and social topics and I feel responsible- more than ever- to continue this journey in a meaningful way.
WHAT INSPIRED THIS PROJECT?
In 2012, I started a street performance project called BoomBoxBoy to raise money for my first album. When my computer got stolen I had to start all over. I didn't have the money available to buy a new computer so I went to the Apple Store and used their demo computers to make my album. I called it PHATASS, an acronym for Prince Harvey At The Apple Store: Soho.
Immediately after I released PHATASS in July 2015, campaigning for the general election took off and I fell into a deep depression watching the way the media covered the candidates and paid too much platform and airtime to one candidate. I felt this way for the next year and a half leading up to the election. As a musician, I knew that I waned to talk about this through songs and share it with anyone else who felt the way I did. Last summer I wrote "Stay Gold". I released it the night before the election and Paper Magazine wrote an article about it telling everyone: "In case the worst happens stay gold, stay bold!"
In mere hours after I released "Stay Gold" my father died. Then 24hrs later Trump was elected, and I saw so many of my friends, who were filled with hope turn disappointed. But for me it was different. For me the depression was subsiding. Writing "Stay Gold", I had already begun the healing process, and the shock and disappointment my peers felt was a reminder that my 'Stay Gold, Stay Bold' lyric needed to, and must, become a form of daily practice. Now, more than ever, was time to take action.
STAY BOLD: 100 DAYS 100 SONGS
As a form of protest, I will be writing, recording, and releasing 100 songs in 100 days. Through these songs my hope is to motivate and fuel action as we take steps to creating the world we want. Love, desire, isolation, revolution, death, division, success, pain, and happiness are but a few of the main topics I’ll be exploring. The aim is to 'activate' and inspire action and dialogue. Mirroring the president's 'first 100 days' I will use these 100 days to create a musical universe that reflects the one I'd like to see in the world. Every notable attempt of societal change requires a group effort and collective responsibility. The importance of community building during such pursuits is invaluable. In addition to releasing one song everyday by myself, during the course of this project I plan to incorporate a host of collaborators who share similar visions. A collection of filmmakers, musicians, visual and new media and performance artists, all who identify with similar topics raised in relationship to what has resulted the presidency of Trump as well as its aftermath.
Through these songs I want to leave bread crumbs to a new mode of thought and daily process. One in which we never feel comfort in ‘the wait’, and instead feel empowered in creating daily rituals that become the worlds we desire. One in which we understand that while we wait, there are others who envision a world completely different from us, and would prefer to live in a society riddled in divisions and systems engineered to keep one group of people above another.
“STAY BOLD: 100 DAYS 100 SONGS” is a reminder to everyone including myself that no matter what the results are it shouldn't change who we are and what is expected from us.
WHERE IS YOUR MONEY GOING?
I know most projects launched with kickstarter start after the project has been funded. In the vein of this project I thought it would make sense to run the campaign while doing this project to give you a sense of the music and also why wait? Our most expensive cost is recording. I have set up a home recording studio and plan to record and mix and master all the songs released while the campaign runs. However that is an insane way of doing things and it is also really draining my pockets. Once this campaign is funded I would like to hire engineers to help me record and to help with mixing and mastering also.
Once funded we will be making similar designs with "STAY BOLD" graphics on them. Just to add more options. The ultimate goal is to hire a graphic designer to create one more design so backers will have three different options of t-shirts to choose from.
