What did it feel like in Rome circa 400CE? Did the people sense something was wrong before the literal "barbarians at the gates" moment? Could they feel that power and influence was shifting elsewhere in the world? What about Britain in the 18th century? What about now? Is America waning as China is rising? Maybe.
Black Lotus Empire is a 12 issue, full-color comic book series that explores what life might be like in China almost 100 years from now. In BLE, China is now the sole economic and military superpower in the world, and the government frequently engages in intimidation, violence, and control of information to keep the people in line. But cracks are forming, and the leaders know that unrest may threaten their rule, so a sinister general has been giving the authority to create a fighting force to combat China’s only true enemy: her own people.
Ok, but what is the story?
Here is the setup: It's the year 2107. China has prospered over the last century due to an ongoing industrial revolution. Although these events have made millions of Chinese wealthy and pulled millions more out of poverty, it has inflicted devastating consequences on the environment and health of the people. The rate of birth defects has increased at an alarming rate, but the one child policy puts parents cursed with a disabled child in an unfortunate position. Many babies born with deformities are abandoned by their parents. The military, under the ambitious General Ying, has started the practice of taking in these unwanted children and experimenting on them with the goal of creating a force of Super-soldiers called the Chāo Shìbīng (超士兵). The Chāo Shìbīng are trained to fight dissidents and other internal threats against the stability of the country.
The hero of the story is a young girl named Sparrow. She was one of these children. Born with bird wings, she is gifted with the ability of natural flight. Taken by the military at a young age, she has been trained to combat the internal threats to the country. Issue one picks up at the beginning of her first assignment, which doesn't exactly go as her handler's plan.
What is the money for?
This money covers the cost of the art for Black Lotus Empire #1, all Kickstarter and Amazon fees, and costs for printing and shipping the pledge rewards. I am really happy to be working with Carlos Gomez, a talented young artist from Spain.
What's the ultimate goal?
I plan to shop issue one around to comic publishers to see if anyone will pick up the 12 issue run. If not, I will self publish and hope to make enough money off of each issue to fund the next one, or come crawling back to Kickstarter for more help. I don't really plan on making a penny off of the comic, and may even lose some money, but I am having fun writing it and I would love to see it come to life. If this works out, I have a couple of other stories I want to start work on.
What if the funding goal isn't met?
If I can't meet my funding goal, then I will have to dip further into my savings to pay for the book.
here are a couple of pages in the sketch stage. Check the updates for more.
