Founded in 2016, the Social Justice Sewing Academy is a critical education program that bridges artistic expression with activism. By using textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion SJSA empowers youth to become agents of social change.
Our goal is to bring together artist-mentors, youth, and community members to learn and create through community centered projects. Using art as an organized methodology, we promote a model that actively engages in conversations with our surrounding community through the lens of contemporary art. We support youth to become civically engaged artists as they are challenged to tackle current social issues in their community that directly affect their lives.
We hope to create a new program, the SJSA Ambassadors (targeting high school students and college undergraduates) which will start with a four-day regional training for participants to learn foundational social justice leadership skills through workshops, guest lecturers and discussions. This program is intended to incorporate mentorship and civic engagement opportunities to empower student voice. We anticipate the SJSA Ambassadors program to become a global youth movement, unleashing young people's creativity to counter the systemic injustices they face in their communities.
