Home Alone feature.
A new feature is added to our ZIR product named 'Home Alone' after the movie. This features put the lights at a random interval sequence, so that burglars would think that some one is in the house. The time of putting on light in the house is at random interval from 5 to 15 minutes. In the video above I shorten the time to be from 5 to 15 seconds to make demo short and put the two lights in one place so that I can record them together. I intend to add TV on/off to the option to add sound to home.
What is ZIR ?￼
It's the fun way to control home devices using voice commands, or through Web Browser from any mobile device or Computer. It can control devices that are enabled for IR (infra Red), Z-wave, RF(315MHz /433MHz ), and WiFi. Devices that can be controlled include TV, DVD, Audio Systems, Roku, Lights, Thermostat, door locks, window shades, etc
I used to live in a two story/floor house with my wife and two kids. All the bedrooms were on the second level and living room with kitchen were on the main level. My home thermostat was on the main floor and every time we needed to change the temperature I had to go downstairs to the main floor to change it. It was very painful to wake up in the middle of the night and walk downstairs to change the temperature. Same issues when we needed to switch ON/OFF the main floor lights, backyard lights, kids room lights, hall way lights, corridor lights and kitchen lights.
We needed a solution for our family comfort. I researched the market for the solution. There were some options in the market which were only solving some of our problems but not all. It did not make sense to buy three or four products to solve our problem and also take care of their controllers. Also devices controlled through IR or RF (315MHz /433MHz) had different protocols within the same frequency or IR. I discussed this with my partner and he said we can also add voice commands to be cool controller. We came up with an idea to design a wireless gateway that can control all or most of the wireless devices currently available and should be smart enough to learn the existing devices protocols in the market. While we are benefiting from this technology why not make it available to others for their comfort. We researched the market and found out that most of the devices for a smart home are either Infra Red controlled, Z-Wave RF controlled, 315MHz /433MHz RF controlled or WiFi RF controlled. Since we carry our cell phone all the times, why not to use only cell phone or a tablet as a controller and not worry about remotes etc. We discussed the idea and started working on the product with our hobby boards. After little more research and analysis Raspberry Pi looked very promising for our application with our wireless gateway designed board. So we decided to use powerful Raspberry PI board and design our own ZIR-100 wireless gateway stack able board to make this cool product. We are sure it would be a very cool addition to your home as well. It will help in saving money and energy bills.
How does it work?
When we talk to iDevices or Android Devices, these devices will send WiFi messages to ZIR-200, that will understand the commands and wirelessly controls the lights, thermostat, door locks, window blinds, TV etc.
Web browser in windows, Mac, iOS or Android can also be used to control the same devices. A prerequisite is a WiFi router connected to DSL or higher speed internet.
Supported Home Devices:
Z-wave RF enabled devices. RF enabled Devices(315MHz /433MHz ). Infra red controlled devices like TV, DVD player, Audio Systems, Roku or any other infra red enabled device. It can also learn the infra red and 315MHz /433MHz commands from the device's remote control to make it capable to voice control the same device. Our road map contains adding ZigBee RF control and also controlling WiFi devices like light switches and nest thermostat etc. WiFi devices control would be only a firmware upgrade from our website.

What is the Board?
Buying the ZIR-100 board would be a great start for enthusiastic hobbyist. It contains one fully functional assembled printed circuit board (PCB) called ZIR-100. This board will enable your Raspberry Pi board/unit to automate your home, once attached. ZIR-100 pictures show our current fully functional board with Z-Wave's ZM2102 module, but moving forward we will be using Z-Wave latest version ZM5304, which will give us added features and save cost as well. Our final version design has ZWave’s ZM5304 module, 315MHz /433MHz Transmitter, 315MHz /433MHz Receiver, Infrared (IR) Transmitter, Infrared (IR) Receiver(learner) and power management.
What is in the Product?
It is ZIR-200, which is a complete product housed in a casing, ready to automate your home with voice control. It has both Raspberry pi board (Credit Card size board) and our designed ZIR-100 board (Plug-in/stacked board to Raspberry Pi), along with power supply and SD card.
How to setup and add ZIR-200 to the home network:
- Insert SD card in the computer and double click file name 'wan.txt'.
- In a sequence write : your network id, password , and type of router encryption on three consecutive lines . Save the file.
- Remove SD card from the computer and Insert it in ZIR-200, and connect the power after a minute the blue light of the WIFI dongle will be blinking indicting it is added to the network .
Use the browser to control your devices:
Put ZiR-200 IP address followed by :8080 as shown below. You can then save this to your favorite.

ZIR currently supports Siri on iOS5 and iOS6. If we get funded we plan to build our own voice recognition APP for iOS7 & Android.
iOS5/iOS6/iOS7/Android/Windows & Mac can all use web browser to control all devices.
Our software is open source and consists of bundle of open sources Like Raspbian,LIRC, Siriproxy...etc, that are combined together using python and shell script. On the first shipping date of ZIR a link will be available on our web site: inventca.com to GitHub, so that other developers can help us to make it better. For hackers other open source can be used with our Hardware after changing settings and recompiling like OpenZwave.

We are taking this project to Kickstarter to get it out into the real world. This is a project that we've been working on for over a year now. We've invested a lot of time and money in it to make sure everything is right. And now it's finally time to make it available to the public. Through your help we can take this product to the mass production and bring the cost down. This will put things in a great place to start selling the ZIR product.
How will be the money used?
Money will be used to cover the following:
*Z-Wave alliance membership and programming/development tools.
*Tooling for the Plastic Case, which includes top housing, bottom housing and the SD card cover. Making our own plastic case is only feasible if there are enough quantities like 1000. Otherwise we will use off the shelf MCM electronics part MCM part# 83-14473 and SD card cover MCM part# 83-14880.
*Raw polycarbonate material for the injection molding
*Cost of the Dark plastic cover which will let Infra Red pass.
*Cost of fabricating PCB and assembly
*Bill of Material cost
*Cost of shipping to individuals
We have already finalized our Bill Of Material (BOM) and got our production quotes. Our final PCB layout is very close to be released. We are not expecting any major road blocks on the design front, as we already have our working product and the final PCB is just a cleanup. Since we are shooting for lower quantities initially, our cost is high due to the fact that we are using off the shelf product case. But if we get a lot of interest, we will increase the production quantity and design our own mechanical case, which will give us more flexibility in term of design, features, look and feel etc. The money we will save will be spent on the development of added features and would be available to the backers as a software upgrade. We are so used to of travelling to china for manufacturing support and are ready to fly to China again to support ZIR production.
Production schedule is as follow:
Kickstarter is for sponsoring the further development and distribution of the ZIR. However, by supporting the project you are allowing future development of the product. Further down the road, we intend to add Zigbee RF control and also control WiFi enabled devices like lights and NEST thermostat etc. Controlling WiFi enabled devices would be a firmware upgrade only from our website.
Risks and challenges
Close to final prototypes have already been made, and our previous consumer electronics product designing experience will help in making this dream a reality.
We are planning to send the final PCB out for fabrication and buying all essential components for manufacturing, immediately once we hit our funding goal. We will keep our backers updated.
Cost: Everything is being done to bring the cost down on ZIR-100. Raspberry Pi board cost is fix, but off the shelf product case price is high. If we get a lot of interest we will make our own case, which will bring the cost down. Savings by doing this would be spent on the development of added features and supported device list.
Schedule: Unforeseen events happen. But each of us has over 20 years of product designing and delivering the complete products experience. This should help reduce the chances of delays and minimize the likelihood of unforeseen issues. We have done the product designing with all these protocols and interfaces in the past on a number of different products. ZIR is combining all these interfaces on one board and in one product.
Other than some unforeseeable disaster, the biggest risk is if this project doesn't get funded. Please help spread the word about ZIR!
