About this project
Pi-Home is a board that can be attached to a Raspberry pi to add home automation features to your house with fraction of others cost and no monthly fee.
You can control those appliances/devices :
- Infra red controlled devices like TV, DVD player, Audio Systems, Roku or any other infra red enabled device.
- Z-wave RF enabled devices like thermostat, bulb adaptors, plug switches.
- RF enabled Devices(315MHz /433MHz ) like AC Electrical Power Outlet Plug Switch, wireless Remote control lamp holder.
- Zigbee enabled devices like ZHAC Zigbee ON/OFF lighting control module.
Old home Appliances that is not remote control enabled can use RF , ZWave plug switches to be controlled.
Pi-Home with different Raspberry board Models ( A, B, B+)
Pi-Home is most suited to Raspberry Model A as it will have the lowest hight that make it suitable to most off self cases, Model B and B+ will need the cases that have more hight.
Our board works with those open sources, that are pre-installed on our image :
1- Linux infrared control LIRC http://www.lirc.org A list of predefined remotes are in: http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/ You still can add new IR remotes by learning through the IR receiver on board using irrecord .
2- Open Zwave http://www.openzwave.com
3- 433/315 Transmit & Receive This is our code and built is in C and the source is on the image.
4- Python-XBee https://code.google.com/p/python-xbee/
Backers will be capable to download the image from our web site and flash it to SD.
You can either use keyboard connected to raspberry pi, or use SSH remotely to send control command to the devices through command lines. Developers can add their own user interface for easy use, or they can use Web.py or similar to have a web-server control interface.
This board is also used in Maestro, a product that gives full control of your home appliances from the palm of your hand using iPhone, iPad, Android phone/tablet, or your laptop. You can even control those appliances from outside the house. Adding an IP camera you can even see your house remotely while controlling it. No downloads is needed, the application will be running from your browser. You can even use your voice to control your Appliances.
The first 100 backers will get accesses to download and try the Beta version of Maestro software for free, no development required.

This is our second round on Kickstarter, from our first time we found that 78% of the backers were interested in the add on board and not the final product. So this time we concentrated our effort to the board, adding Zigbee to it as some backers request, changing the name from ZIR to Pi-Home to be more meaningful to it's function. Introducing only the add on board lowered our funding requirements.
We have already finalized our Bill Of Material (BOM) and got our production quotes. We are not expecting any major road blocks on the design front, as we already have our working product and the final PCB is just a cleanup.
Risks and challenges
Our previous consumer electronics product designing experience will help in making this dream a reality.
We are planning to send the final PCB out for fabrication and buying all essential components for manufacturing, immediately once we hit our funding goal. We will keep our backers updated.
Cost: Everything is being done to bring the cost down on Pi-Home. Raspberry Pi board cost is fix and you can buy them online.
Schedule: Unforeseen events happen. But each of us has over 20 years of product designing and delivering the complete products experience. This should help reduce the chances of delays and minimize the likelihood of unforeseen issues. We have done the product designing with all these protocols and interfaces in the past on a number of different products. Pi-Home is combining all these interfaces on one board and in one product.
Other than some unforeseeable disaster, the biggest risk is if this project doesn't get funded. Please help spread the word about Pi-Home!
