Jesse Johanning is a graphic designer at Sub Rosa and Manuela Garcia is a photographer. Through the recommendation of acquaintances, we met and immediately began brainstorming ways in which our interest collided. Our conversations immediately began to revolve around the creation of a book. We both were and are extremely interested in the exchange of ideas and the powers they undeniably hold. Through sharing our libraries, we were extremely enthused to find another person whose passion for the intricate details that create a proper environment for a specific form of storytelling. Immediately, we began to conceptualize, through the mediums of photo and essay, an endeavor we believe to be entirely our own. As we began conceiving this project, we understood that taking on a task as such required both monetary and creative support.
The book is primarily comprised of photos. Manuela Garcia and Brandon Hall. Manuela’s naturalistic photography is inspired by her conception of time in the recognition of the lifespan of botany. Brandon focuses on the improvisational aspect of looking at our surroundings. Manuela is a Colombian-American photographer who is including photos from the Andes, the Everglades and New York. Brandon, a Midwestern born artist, currently gathering material from the Appalachian Trail, is in a pursuit of capturing an honest depiction.
The choice in using two photographers comes from our recognition of two people speaking similar languages through the use of photography and passion. The friendship has entailed of working along each other and recognizing the merit in their differences and the beauty in the truths the intersections represent.
The writing in the book is a compilation of poetry and philosophical essays on silence. This includes the texture, shape, context, and implications of sound and lack thereof.
Our venture takes form in a 128 page 5" x 8" photo-book. The construction of the book is of the utmost importance to us! The pages are printed on Vellum, a translucent paper that adds a specific texture and experience for the reader. The pièce de résistance, will be a cover that's sensitive to one’s touch, meaning each time one picks up the book the actual color of the book changes. Through this meticulous construction, we believe we have made a space for silence to live and breath.
The book will be printed by the Chicago-based indie comics and art book printer, Bred Press.

Risks and challenges
We are committed to making this story a unique one, and have dedicated a lot of time into the construction of the book. Vellum is a semi-sheer thicker paper which allows light to go through and illuminate the photos in a rare way every time, depending on the angle of the paper. Vellum allows us to bring you an object with life, a new experience every time. The problem is that vellum is very expensive and can only be printed on via niche methods, which is why we need your help.
We need your help raising the funds to help cover part of the initial cost of printing and self-publishing the first 100-200 copies.
