Our first 100 Early Bird backers will have their shoes shipped out within a week of the campaign succeeding!
The idea for a better bike shoe came while changing from my bike clothes into work clothes in a tiny, actual broom closet. It was Shanghai, 100 degrees and as I wrestled my clothes and shoes out of a jammed pack, I thought, there has got to be a better way. Why did I need to lug around an extra pair of shoes? Was there a bike shoe that was comfortable and stylish that could be worn off the bike? And it should be leather. No such shoe existed.
So, I connected with a local shoe factory. They were instantly stoked about my idea for the ideal bike shoe. Thus, the “Streamline” shoe was conceived. A handmade, super chic, highly functional and durable shoe that is comfortable on and off the bike.
In 2016, I moved back to the weatherful Seattle area only to get a bike messenger job. This was the perfect opportunity to try and abuse the prototype of the Streamline shoe. After constant riding, a crash or two, several 100-plus mile cycle tours, mountain trails and city streets, I've logged some 20,000 miles on a single pair of Streamline shoes. They still look fresh out of the box and they still wear well.
STREAMLINE SHOE FEATURES
Style and Mechanics
The Streamline shoe was inspired by the Golden Days of cycling (circa 1940 & 50's). Some of the most famous racers from that era were also fashion icons and pedaled around outside of the races ready to step off the bike and into a nice restaurant with their attire fitting in seamlessly.
Before the Streamline shoe, I had to cycle with a spare pair of shoes for work and life off the bike. Cycling shoes design were usually cycle-specific, with little thought to style off the bike. They were usually flashy with bright colors or a very casual look. While others had an exposed cleat that made walking awkward.
Fast forward to today. The Streamline shoe is stylish yet functional with a classic yet modern look perforated black leather. They look as good in the office or out on the town with friends as they do on the bike. In fact, I once wore my Streamline shoes to a black-tie event, I even received complements on my "cool shoes". People were shocked when I told them they were cycling shoe. They looked like stylish black shoes suitable for the occasion.
Wearing the Streamline off the bike is comfortable and slip-proof with the gripping rubber lugged sole. With the cleat recessed, walking is natural and quiet with no "cleat clicking" made possible by the height of its lugged sole. Stylish yet functional, this sole design prevents the cleat from damaging to flooring.
I no longer need to cycle with a spare pair of shoes and bigger pack; my lifestyle on and off the bike is Streamlined!
The stiff sole of the Streamline shoe is made of a flexible rubber compound which allows for comfortable cycling. The upper leather is bound to the sole using patent pending technology that prevents peeling to ensure a durable cycling shoe.
The Streamline shoe's sole has an extended platform which permits the cyclist to transition easily to walking as if wearing a normal day shoe. I wanted to make certain I could get directly off a bike and walk on any surface without feeling like I was precariously skating on an ice arena. Other recessed cleats I've found angled my foot for the purpose of cycling. Comfortable on the bike, but uncomfortable to walk in.
The Streamline shoe's sole absorbs impact and minimizes walking vibrations to provide a comfortable experience both on a bike and on the streets.
Perforated American Leather + Synthetic Mesh + Reflective 3M
The Streamline shoe upper is made of perforated, genuine American leather. The perforation allows the foot to regulate air naturally, promoting circulation and breathability. The American leather offers durable quality.
The Streamline shoe is lined with a synthetic mesh fabric that molds to the wearer's foot like a glove.
3M Scotchlite fabric promotes nighttime visibility and increases safety. Situated behind the perforated leather, this 3M reflective material creates a visible flash at night when lit by passing headlights. In daylight, the 3M fabric is unnoticeable.
Before the Streamline shoe, many of my friends used MTB (mountain bike) shoes for road touring because they sought a comfortable, looser fitting cycling shoe. Others complained of foot pain caused by the ratchet system clamping too hard as they rode. We were searching for shoes that fit the desires of a well-rounded cyclist.
The Streamline shoe is designed to suit this need. The synthetic mesh and perforated leather mold so well to my feet that I don't notice they are still on after a ride.

Appeal and Durability
As a common rider, I wanted the Streamline shoe to empower cyclists. The science of footwear should not overwhelm the rider; rather, it should encourage them to focus on the core of this sport: the cyclist and their bike.
I was frustrated by the ease with which my cycling shoes deteriorated: the toe boxes scuffed and platforms separated until I was going through two pairs of cycling shoes a year.
In order to maximize durability, the manufacturer and I designed a foolproof system to keep the upper leather and sole from separating. When we used genuine American leather, it did not matter how many hours I spent riding or walking in these puppies... they have not turned me wrong yet.
I wanted to launch the Streamline cycling shoe with Kickstarter to involve the cycling community, break the norm of "hardcore" cycling, and positively impact lifestyle choices cyclists make. Cyclists ride because we want to have fun, be healthy, and utilize functional yet stylish gear.
There has been a large amount of success in the cycling community with crowdfunding and the majority of it leads back to Kickstarter.
The Kickstarter pledge to raise $8,888 is intended to show our investors that the cycling community believes in the Streamline cycling shoe. Velo Republique already has access to production and shipping on a large scale, but our global backers want to know that there is significant demand for this product within the cycling community. As someone who has cycled for over 20 years, I believe this product solves an immediate shortcoming of this sport.
Thank you! With your help we look forward to building the Streamline shoe's legacy for cycling and lifestyle.
THE STREAMLINE IN ACTION!
Risks and challenges
The Kickstarter community is a lot like the cycling community: We trade ideas, support innovations and we keep spinning with what works. Several folks have approached us about private funding, but we think this idea will be most successful with broad support.
This Kickstarter funds the first round of full production and essentially, puts shoes on the feet of people like you who have faced the cycling shoe dilemma. The Streamline takes away the excuse of not being able to ride your bike to get where you want to go. These are bike shoes that aren't - they neither clack nor slip and they look and feel good. Maybe the Streamline shoe will be the first sort of disruptor that makes cycling easy because you're always dressed for it and anything else.
This is my first Kickstarter campaign. The biggest challenge is growing a large amount of support in such a short time. I am confident about the purpose, utility, and potential of the Streamline cycling shoe based on my own experience and the feedback I've received from cycling enthusiasts and backers. We have the design, manufacturing, and team assembled but we're trying the best way to get the shoe to you.
I look forward to keeping our supporters involved and updated as this campaign continues. Thank you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
