Update #14: Final 3 Days and Magic

Hey everyone, just 3 days left in the campaign and already the excitement is starting to pick up! We're firm believers that game development should always be an organic process. As designers, it's our job to allow the project to evolve organically on its own. Those of you who were with us for the first campaign may recall just how far Antharion has come since then (and really that was only several months ago). What I guess I'm trying to say is that, as great as the project seems now, it will only continue to improve more and more with time, so that by the time alpha comes around, you can expect an even far more highly polished and refined Antharion!

                                 Magic

Today we're going to talk a bit about magic. In Antharion there are three schools of magic: Black, White and Gray. Antharion's magic system is relatively unique in that each of its spell schools focuses singularly on one thing. Black Magic focuses on harmful spells, White Magic focuses on buffs and restorative spells, and Gray Magic focuses on alterative and illusory spells. This means you won't find any damage spells in the school of White Magic and likewise you won't find any buffs in Gray, etc. Below is a complete list of all of the spells we currently have working. Keep in mind that we will continue adding/refining spells throughout the remainder of development.

Black Magic

  • Firebolt - Hurls a ball of fire at a single target
  • Summon Beast - Conjure a rat to fight for you
  • Curse of Weakness - Increase the target's weakness to physical attacks
  • Poison - Does damage over time to a single target
  • Curse of Sloth - Slows your enemy temporarily lowering his action points
  • Web - Immobilizes the target in a spider's web
  • Life-Tap - Convert some of your life into mana
  • Inferno - Create a huge wall of fire extending out in every direction
  • Ice Bolt - Hurl a shard of ice at a single target freezing it
  • Death Blow - Deals a single devastating blow to an adjacent target
  • Cone of Cold - Freezes all targets within its cone
  • Curse of Magic - Makes the target susceptible to magical damage
  • Poison Cloud - Poison all targets within its radius
  • Summon Demon - Summon an imp to hurl fireballs at your enemies
  • Last Stand - Create a massive explosion killing the caster in the process

Gray Magic

  • Polymorph - Turns the target into a pig leaving it temporarily unable to fight
  • Detect Life - Reveals all nearby creatures hidden in darkness
  • Relieve burden - Allows the caster to carry additional weight
  • Extend light- See further into darkness
  • Mark/Recall - Set a location anywhere and instantly teleport back to it later (not in combat)
  • Silence - Prevent the target from casting magic
  • Teleport - Instantly transports the caster to a new location
  • Fear - Causes the target to flee the caster
  • Invisibility - Prevents the caster from being seen by foes
  • Knock Back - Pushes your enemies away from you outwards in every direction
  • Mass fear - Fears all targets within a radius
  • Lock-door - Magically seals a door or container
  • Sneak - Reduces your party's chance of being spotted by foes
  • Mass Invisibility - Makes your entire party invisible

 White Magic

  • Heal - Increases the target's health
  • Magic Shield - Protect the target from magical damage
  • Frost Armor - Chance to freeze attacker upon taking physical damage
  • Charm - Recruit an enemy to fight for you
  • Knight's Blessing - Increase the target's damage capability with melee weapons
  • Group Heal - Heal your entire party
  • Melee Shield - Protects the target from melee damage
  • Fire Armor - Chance to deal fire damage to your attacker upon being hit
  • Haste - Target is granted twice as many AP points next turn
  • Archer's Blessing - Increase the target's capabilities with bows
  • Missile Shield - Protect the target from missile damage
  • Resurrect - Bring one of your party members back to life
  • Cure - Remove one negative magical effect
  • Sacrifice - Give up your life to heal your party 

                           The Final 3 Days

These last three days are crucial for Antharion...

While we're all immediately focused on unlocking the 20k stretch goal, we firmly believe that the 25k stretch goal is completely within our grasp. If we can hit 20k before going into the final 24 hours then we have a great shot at unlocking the last 25k stretch goal!

An interesting statistic, if each of our $15 backers upgraded by just $10 to the Beta tier (which also includes the Soundtrack) then we'd instantly blow past our 20k stretch goal! Also, if everyone who's currently pledged between the $20-$40 tier upgraded to the $50 (which includes an insane amount of stuff) we'd instantly shoot past 21k!

      @Kevin, We've long considered creating a few polymorph spell variants so it's a strong possibility. I'd also like to do a contagion like spell whereby the target takes damage over time until it eventually explodes infecting any nearby targets with the contagion.

      Yes my Kickstarter temporary ban has been lifted. Exploding corpses are always awesome, especially if they cause collateral damage.

      Any chance Polymorph will evolve beyond changing things into pigs and include rabbits, the fabled majestic platypus or spotted alpaca?

      @Denes,
      1) There is a magic resistance that both monsters and players will have, yes. A spell's effectiveness/accuracy depends on both the target's resistance as well as the caster's corresponding spell school level plus a few others things. Immunity is just 100% resistance, though certain monsters will have certain immunities to particular spell types.
      2) We've been toying around with several ideas related to summoning, including additional summon spells as well as spells where you can capture the souls of monsters you kill and then summon them back later so we'll see what makes it in the final game.
      3) We have considered adding summoning to the other schools (some kind of angelic healer for White for example), so this is still a very real possibility.
      4) You learn spells by purchasing them through spell vendors. There is no limit as to the spells available to you in combat, however, there are practical restrictions relating to mana that will prevent you from casting too many powerful spells.

      @Christoph, we definitely understand that not everyone is going to be interested in the iPad version, that's why it's just 1 of 3 rewards at the $50 tier.

      A few questions/thoughts:
      1. You mentioned immunities, but will there be magic resistance, similar to saving throws in D&D? Or does e.g. a Polymorph spell always have a 100% chance to transform the victim (unless immune)?
      2. Summoning is cool, but make the creatures more badass, rat and imp are puny :) Or are these just the Black Magic skill level 1 creatures, and e.g. at skill level 20 you start summoning dire wolves/fire elementals, and by level 100 they are manticores/balrogs?
      3. Also, why not add summoning to the other schools of magic, like a healer/buffer angel/fairy for White or an illusion or some kind of immobilizing creature for Gray. Also, no necromancy? :)
      4. How do you learn spells and is there a limit to how many of the learned spells are available to you in a given combat?

      BTW, I like the sacrifice spells!

      @Tobias, Lucky pretty much summed up my line of thinking exactly, it's kind of close to spells like teleport but I'll admit it's an entirely arbitrary distinction and just as well could have been included in one of the other schools.

      @Lucky, expect both story and storytelling to be on par with everything we've shown off so far!

      Your "interesting statistic" makes it sound like you're not really thankful for small pledges. Not everybody can up their pledge. But I'm pretty sure anybody can use a calculator to come up with "interesting" statistics.

      Thanks for the reply, guys, that's what I wanted to hear. Pretty bad ass... I'm really pleased with the level of detail going in. I truly hope that we'll be treated to a campaign story that can match the depth of detail captured by the gameplay mechanics you've shared with us!
      Tobias: I think it's grey because it exerts an physical force, but by my reading of the description, does no specific damage. It's more of a neutral repositioning of clustered enemies... what you *do* once they're scattered, however ;-)

      Really glad you guys like it :)

      @solarempire, we already have a system kind of like that in place where the power of your spells increase along with the caster's corresponding skill level. So a character with 100 level Black Magic will cast insanely powerful firebolts compared to a character with only level 1 Black Magic. I'd consider buffing mark/recall for the higher skill levels but would have to see how it all balances out.

      @Sanatanz, polymorph is my favorite Gray Magic spell too ;) And at higher levels you can cast it on multiple enemies!

      Would it be possible to allow like 3 levels for each spell and make it more powerfull but very hard to reach the highest level? So for example for the mark/recall spell you would get more than one mark point at level 3.
      I always like to have something to still improve while adventuring.

      Yeah, certain creatures are immune to certain spells. So undead, for example, would be immune to life detect.

      Mark/Recall exists is in addition to fast traveling via portals that cost money to use. So there's kind of a fine line we're walking, where we want travel to have some value but we also don't want to it be too difficult/expensive to use. An overpowered mark/recall would kind of nullify the whole fast travel system in a way if we overpowered it - but as we've said, everything is still in flux so if we find something else works better we'll change it :)
