Update #13: Quest Video

Happy New Year! Hope everyone had a pleasant/safe celebration. Antharion rang in the New Year with 606 backers and just over 16k, well on our way to unlocking the 2nd and 3rd stretch goals! Remember, only 4 days left.

This video demonstrates a very simple quest from start to finish along with a little combat and some new interface elements. All of the music in the video is part of Antharion's original soundtrack composed by Eric Gallardo.

      @Saxon, thanks a lot! So yeah that was a demo quest and rarely will a quest objective be located right near the giver. Also the door was a placeholder and will be replaced by a yet to be created ice door made specially for these types of ice cave dungeons. Since we hit the first stretch goal and unlocked "Northern Point Winter Island" there will be lots of these wintery environments!

      Nice update, thanks for posting the video. I like the music alot and the game seems to have a nice atmosphere. I love snowy regions so I hope there are plenty of them in the game.

      It seems odd that a cave would have a wooden door? Also, I assume this was just a demo quest and mosts quests wont be located right outside the building they were given in?

      I upped my pledge so I am looking forward to this game.

      @Bryan, sorry for the delay... that's something we've considered a bit. One thing I just mentioned in another thread was that I'd love to do an exploding corpse animation for certain spells. I personally love little detailed touches like these in games and, time permitting and resources permitting, we'd love to add more such touches to Antharion!

      @Zombra, we're well on our way to hitting those last two stretch goals, things are starting to pick up and look really great for us!

      Very nice! I was wondering, will there be different death animations depending on how they died? For instance, the last monster died by a fireball, it would have been cool to instead see the monster burst into flames, then turn all black and crispy, then poof into black dust. Thanks for the update!

      @Justinian, Glad to hear it!

      @Godewijn & @Joost, Ahh yes, the first campaign. That seems like forever ago. No walking animation, yeah it may bother some people at first but ultimately it improves game play by making the controls feel snappier and more responsive. Combat is super simple and shouldn't take anyone more than a minute to figure out.

      I can imagine adding walking animations would require lots of work. I don't mind the lack of animation in that departement, effects like that you stop noticing after the first 10 minutes of playing the game. Rather I would love to see more animations in the environment to make it feel alive.

      But keep up the good work! It is looking great already so I am really curious in the extra polishing the coming months!

      I remember quite some talk about the 2D characters way back (the previous kickstarter) and I forgot what came out of it: are they going to get walking animation or not?

      I don't mind either way, just curious :)

      @Kevin, thanks for the vote of confidence!

      @Zombra, we're well aware of both issue but they've been low on the priority list as there are tons of other more immediately pressing issues to deal with. Antharion is constantly evolving and you can expect the alpha to be way more polished than what we currently have. By the way you have a great eye for detail, I also tend to notice little details that those in other games too.

      I love what I'm seeing! Gameplay looks fun; the music is great too.
      Here come the inevitable (but hopefully constructive) criticisms:
      1) I'd still love to see the player characters walk farther apart! It looks like they're all holding hands ALL THE TIME except in combat. When people walk that close to me, I yell at them for kicking me in the ankles. It looks weird.
      2) I like the idle animations, but it's weird that they're all synchronized. Very strange to see that broadsword and the skull staff and the other two staves all pumping up and down in unison like a cheerleading squad. You know?

      Looks really awesome! People making nitpicking complaints need to realize this is pre-alpha and most game assets are placeholders. Once the core game is done expect a graphical tweaks and sounds being finalized.

      I have great faith in Orphic to deliver beyond their original scope. Please keep the updates coming! It's vital that you show as much as possible in the last 4 days. Take a break from coding, answer questions on the main comments section, engage your backers with more videos, game assets, and show us why we need to up pledges to his the 20K stretch.

      Thanks for the fantastic feedback guys!

      @Darklord, yes you did detect a bit of humor with the Wraith's name.

      @SantanzChild, the footstep sounds are placeholders and we'll switch to much better/subtler footstep sounds before final release. We'll also have different footstep sounds for different environments.

      @Michael, the combat interface is by no means close to being finished and we totally feel the same as you with regards to clunky/unintuitive combat controls in games like these. We're still in the process of smoothing out the edges and you can expect to see many improvements and additions over the next 4 months.

      @Chris, yes it's absolutely possible! A simple line-of-sight test does the trick, it just wasn't on for debugging purposes. The discounting reward was mainly there for the sake of demonstration, in the actual game a reward like that would more probably only show up at the end of a long difficult quest line.

      @Chris Finch, don't worry we're on the same page when it comes to this and I personally promise Antharion will only be released with a beautifully smooth, functional and intuitive combat interface - nothing less! We have an optional combat grid that can be toggled but haven't demoed it yet.

      @Scott, yes we already have full-volume, music and sound effects controls up and working. You can set the music so it's barely audible or just turn it off all together.

      @Peter, A lot of the sound effects we're using are placeholders and the lesser sounding stuff will absolutely be replaced prior to release.

      Looking good, liking the music. Sound effects could use some tweaking I think. I can see myself getting really tired of the walking and bag opening sounds very quickly.

      I'm guessing you've already thought of this, but I hope you have an audio option to turn the music off. No criticism implied, it sounds great! But I like to have that option if I think I'm going to be playing a game for a long time.

      Great video, you get a solid feel for the game and it's obviously in good shape, well done! My only comment would be that I agree with Michael Hoffmann -- some better visual feedback with regard to character pathing would be very helpful and avoid the frustration that comes from zigging when you want to zag. First thing that comes to mind would be a movement grid like HoMM or King's Bounty, but anything to add at least a subtle visual cue would work great.

      Any chance it is possible to make it so you can't shoot through enemies? Add some tactic to front line.

      Also, I hate it when you buy a sweet new sword, and 5 minutes later you get a discount at the shop :(.

      Looks cool, but you should really work on the combat interface. Like marking the spot where the character will end up and the path he will take. Otherwise it will be extremely frustrating to sit through tougher battles (and I hope there will be a lot of them).
      It already took quite a while to get used to the Avernum/Avadon System, please don't make it worse (the Combats itself were great in these games, the controls on the other hand...)

      The music if awesome in that video I hope we can expect more of it at that level. My only complaint in that video is the sound of the walking. I can live with the clicky taking steps sound but atleast change it when for when we are walking in the snow shesh :P
