Update #5: Lighting and Shadowing Video

Hey guys! In the past week we've made a few modifications to Antharion's rendering engine and thought we might as well make an update out of. So here's a video showcasing our engine's real-time dynamic lighting and shadowing capabilities along with a newly added "classic lighting mode" option for older devices (or for people who prefer a more tile-based aesthetic). We've also included the first dungeon atmosphere track by our composer Eric Gallardo. Check it out...

      All right, if your torches don't burnout, maybe have a lantern option as well with a bigger light radius. Although the idea of lighting existing torches off your own sounds pretty nice.

      A Light spell would typically be available cheaply and easily. There should be some reason to prefer a torch, or just don't have a Light spell. All it does is force at least one character to have a single handed weapon. Or perhaps a single torch/Light spell could provide low illumination, so there would be a reason to have more *if* the dungeon were pitch black.

      Torches in offhand are enough: you won't be able to use two-handed weapon, bow, shield etc.
      Also some magic spell or object that could shine strong light would be great for stronger chars (or those who have explored more).

      @Darklord, the classic lighting system is the newer one ;) The harsh lines in the video were only really noticeable because the size of the light source was increased for the sake of demonstration. Shouldn't be very noticeable in game. @Scott, torches won't burnout - that kind of thing really annoys me personally. Making you choose between a torch/weapon is one of those things that forces the player to think more carefully about what he's doing - though you're right, the alternative is just to allow the player is equip it in his off hand. We'd love more feedback about what you guys think in regards to this.

      I don't see why the player would have to choose between a torch and a weapon. Can't you hold the torch in your offhand and still use a one-handed weapon? Hopefully your torches don't burnout, or do so very slowly (like one per level, max). A pitch black dungeon would be awesome.

      Great lighting and I love the soundtrack. Sounds a bit like Temple of Elemental Evil... One of my all time favorites :)

      I'll be honest I prefer the classic lighting, the new system creates some very harsh lines, maybe if you could diffuse them somehow?

      Oh and that music is great! :-)

      Also, there should be dungeons where not only is it pitch black but there's no torches (empty torch holders) that require you to have a stockpile of torches to light and leave behind. And further, dungeons (or sections of rooms) where magic prevents torches from bring lit altogether... Only magic vs magic will/might produce light.

      So, snuff out our torches at times and let loose the monsters for pants crapping moments. ;)

      @Orphic I can't really tell from the videos, but if each character has an off-hand weapon/shield hand slot free, allow a torch to be carried off-hand and weapon in main hand. If you only have 1 slot for a single weapon or shield, consider making the 2 ring slots accessory slots so 1 can hold a torch or something else in the off-hand (non-weapon).

      Or have a Phantom Torch spell where a torch floats around and follows the caster?

      Glad you guys liked it :) We're still working out how to deal with torches. My inclination is to make a torch like a weapon and to force you to choose between equipping the two. But this would necessitate a light spell being active almost constantly in dimly lit dungeon combat situations. I'd also would like to have some dungeons that are totally pitch black. @Kevin, having unlit torches in a dungeon and lighting them with your own torch is a really really cool idea, thanks for that one!

      I was just going to write a similar note as Zombra below. I hope the adventuring party member/s can carry a torch, lurk through completely black dungeons and light unlit torches on the walls as you encounter them, eventually lighting the entire dungeon as you progress... At least for the more ancient dungeons forgotten for ages.

      I LOVE the soundtrack piece.

      The lighting looks great, too. I really hope that the party can carry around a light source without being screwed out of a hand weapon. (Light spell?) I want to go into scary locations that have no lighting. It's so weird in so many games to go into a dungeon abandoned for a thousand years and find lit torches on every wall, you know?

      Thinking of upping my pledge to get the Soundtrack Pack just based on that snippet ... more samples please ... :)
