The iBoardbot is a robot connected to the internet capable of writing texts and drawing with great precision. Also, it can erase in a quick and effective way. Send to your iBoardbot your information from any part of the world. As it has a multi-user interface you can also play and challenge your kids, use it as a collaborative notice board or as a twitter wall in your shop window. Have fun and enjoy learning how to assemble your iBoardbot!

The iBoardbot is able to reproduce what you remotely draw using its web application from any part of the world and any device: a laptop, a smartphone or a tablet. From a web app that can be shared, the user will find the necessary apps for the control of the board. You will be able to draw, write a text of your choice (even from the other side of the world!) and to access the iBoardbot´s configuration menu . This drawing robot can be used at the same time by as many users as you want. 

The Iboardbot is a DIY robot designed by JJRobots under the following rule: all the robot projects should be assembled using the same components we have used before  (and these components can also be used in future projects).

We wanted an autonomous remotely controlled drawing robot with access to the internet. And It had to fullfil the following:

A web application (so it can be independent from the platform we are using at that moment) will send your drawing/text to the CLOUD. In the same way, the robot, with its capacity to access to the internet, will "display" that information on the board 

This robot, with its open API for developers will allow anyone to make the most of its possibilities.  E.g.: Writing Tweets with a specific Hashtag, displaying motivational quotes, showing the weather forecast in your city, ifttt recipes,  the latest reviews about your shop or your company... So much opportunity, so many possibilities!

 The WebAPP is quite easy to use. Right now, it has some features, among them:

Send any text. The iBoardbot will adjust it to the right size so it can fit on the board and it will draw it using its own font. Just type it and click/tap on SEND

 It can precisely draw what you assign to it. Different users will be able to collaborate with the drawing at the same time from different devices and world places. No matter how far the drawer is; the drawing precision will be as if the drawer himself was holding the pen with his hands.

There will be an online gallery where you can choose any already uploaded designs or you can also upload your own graphics (after an adaptation process that we will gladly show you on the jjrobots website).

Current status :   The IBoardbot app (fully functional but still under development) can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. All the features listed above are 100% available but subjected to improvement and third parties contributions

    The iBoardbot is a robot based on an Arduino board (atmega32u4) with a wifi module with the ability to connect to cloud services. When you write a text in the app or draw with your fingers, this information is sent to the servers (in the CLOUD) then, is processed (vectorization) and splitted into smaller packets of data that are sent to the iBoardbot in order to draw your message in almost real time.

 There is a queue of pending tasks for every single robot in the server. The iBoardbot robot handles this queue, so you don´t need to wait to send new tasks! 

 This is a 2D drawing robot with a simple design and a great accuracy. It uses stepper motors, bearings and timing belts as its mechanical structure. 

 This "display robot" has an integrated eraser in the drawing header so you can wipe the board automatically and continuously send as many messages or graphics as you want! 

The Software/Code: We will provide an open API, so developers can easily make the most of it to generate powerful applications (a weather forecast display, wall info from your social networks, games...) 

The iBoardbot firmware will be open source and the server protocol will be open as well, so you can hack it to your needs or set up your own cloud services. Furthermore, we will provide (as we do with all our projects in JJRobots) "how it works" and technical documents so people can learn robotics with this project while having fun!

If we reach the 230% of our funding goal, we would like to celebrate this milestone enhancing the current features even more. We will connect the iBoardbot API with IFTTT! This will allow you to make cool things like:

- TWITTER WALL: Create your easily customized TWITTER WALL. When a new twitter with a specific #hastag is created, it will be displayed automatically on the iBoardbot.

- Inbox MODE: The Iboardbot will display the subject of every single email sent to its pre-set email address.

- CALENDAR/CLOCK MODE: Send any message/event alarm whenever you want to the iBoardbot. Just write it down in your GOOGLE CALENDAR (set a day and time), and the iBoardbot will draw it. (Would you like to wake up with a motivational quote every day? JUST DO IT!).

- Send notes, reminders... from your POCKET or your EVERNOTE account. Let your imagination fly! There are a lot of possibilities with this IFTTT integration! Bring the CLOUD to the real world! Help us to get to this Stretch GOAL.

 This is the most DIY version. If you have a 3D printer and some other elements (metal bars, bushes, glass, cables, bolts...), just print the 3D parts and follow the assembly instructions we will post on our webpage in order to create your stunning iBoardbot.

Why are we using KICKSTARTER?

The idea of the iBoardbot creation was born when we joined the robots making experience of JJRobots with José López's curiosity, who was looking forward to experiment with the growing area of  Internet of Things. From that moment on, we gave birth to the first functional prototype (after a lot of iterations) of a white board able to draw (already connected to our web server). When we saw that prototype robot being able to draw with great precision, all the staff members were astonished. That “Wow” we uttered almost at the same time, pushed us to jump into this adventure, seeing how our baby "whiteboard bot" became the current iBoardbot. And now that our robot is ready to be a trending topic ;-) and to provide heaps of fun and enjoyment, we decided to show it in Kickstarter so our first “Wow” can grow up as well and become a collective “Wow!!”.

Some questions:

- Why do you use glass for the board instead of using a whiteboard?

We developed a lot of prototypes for this project. The first ones were made using a regular whiteboard. The main problem was that whiteboards get dirty and they quickly look deteriorated. We "discovered" that standard glass boards that people use as bookshelves and come in different colours were really durable and so easy to clean! (that´s the hacking spirit!)They also come with more possibilities, for example: If you want to create a nice back-light effect you only have to put a light behind it and voilà!  Feel free to try another materials as drawing surface (just cut it to the right dimensions)

- If you leave the marker uncapped it dries really fast , doesn't it?

We have tested a lot of markers and we ran across an inexpensive and easily available worldwide marker that you can leave uncapped for several days without drying up! This is the pen we will supply with the KITs.

- Can several users use the iBoardbot at the same time?

Yes, you can easily share your APP with your friends (via email or whatsapp...) and they can use the board at the same time. The server has a task queue for each iBoardbot

- What would be the price of another year (after the first one) of CLOUD service?

17 euros/13 GBP /18.5 USD for the Kickstarter´s KITs.  However, as this is an OPEN project you can create and set your own ONLINE services if you want instead,.

- What kind of skills do I need to assemble my iBoardbot?  

Basic "DIY/MAKER" skills would be desirable to assemble the BASIC KIT/ Iboardbot KIT. The PREMIUM kit comes almost assembled so even a not too witty human can set it up :-)

All the Kits come with the electronics already programmed and soldered.

Of course, the Assembly Manual will be on our webpage as soon as the Kickstarter period ends. On the JJRobots website we will create a specific iBoardbot forum where you can share your modifications or just have a look at the rest of contributions by other members (and obtain some extra helpful tips as well)

Risks and challenges

This is not the first robot we create. The company JJRobots (jjrobots.com) is behind this project.
iBoardbot is currently a full working robot. We wanted to use the Kickstarter funding platform as a helping way to improve it and aiming to reach goals that would be unreachable without funds.
If we raise enough money for this Kickstarter, this will let us enhance its features adding new add-ons and therefore, making the iBoardbot more affordable and more accessible to any person who wants an "almost" plug and play project.
