About this project
We would like to invite you to build something that has never been done before - a full-length feature film that is set in the world of Minecraft!
We are massive fans of the Minecraft game! We have logged many hours playing the game and have made a bunch of fan films set in the world of Minecraft that have already been very well received online.
Moreover, we have been repeatedly disappointed by Hollywood's interpretations and creations of movies based on popular video-game franchises. We would love to see a video-game movie done right, and we feel that, as people with their feet in both the gaming and film-making worlds, we are the right people to do it. We specialize in creating films containing blockbuster quality on a hundredth of the budget that Hollywood requires by utilizing modern technology and a "think-outside-the-box" attitude approach to film-making.
Our plan is to tell an epic fantasy story that would stand alone on its own merit and set that story in the world of Minecraft for its visual appeal and the unique physical rules within the world.
We want to blend live-action cinematography with physically constructed Minecraft-style blocks and premier visual effects to tell a story of adventure, revenge, and creation - the likes of which has never been seen before.
I have directed, produced and composed the VFX for many of YouTube's most-viewed action shorts and video-game-culture-infused videos, garnering more than 1.2 billion views worldwide.
As an avid gamer myself and with a team of people who have helped create some of the highest quality and most entertaining action video game content on the web, I feel that we can make a movie that every single gamer can enjoy and be proud of.
We've made more live-action Minecraft films to date than any other filmmakers and already have the experience and the technology in place to bring the world of Minecraft to life.
In addition, we've created select concept videos (the first of which you can see above) and will be unveiling these shorts throughout this Kickstarter Campaign. To get your feedback, we've self-funded each of these shorts and intend to show you our vision for how "Birth of Man" both expresses the world of Minecraft and tells a unique story.
To us, $600K is a budget that we are comfortable working with to make an epic feature film while Hollywood would typically spend 100 times this much on a VFX heavy epic. We've practiced for the past decade to produce quality at this budget level and incorporate every bit of modern technology to make filmmaking possible at this budget level.
Most importantly, we want this film to be done correctly - to build something every single Minecraft player will not only enjoy watching, but will be proud of. We hope you feel the same and want to join us in creating it.
For years we've been building towards our goal of making a video-game film right, and we feel Minecraft is the perfect game to accomplish this goal.
Minecraft is a game created, developed, and owned by Mojang. As one of the most outstanding and inspiring independent game developers of all time, Mojang has encouraged the Minecraft community to take certain creative license with the overall world of Minecraft. Taking from their cues, we saw a unique opportunity to step up to the plate and create something that we hope will be a distinctive and incredible epic film.
In the same way that the "Dark Knight" approached the world of Batman, we want to approach the world of Minecraft with reverence and respect for the fans of the game.
It only seems fitting that the game which showed the traditional industry that people aren't just interested in AAA games should be the one that inspires a feature film which changes the way video-game-based films are made for the audience and approached by filmmakers.
Hollywood usually waters down films based on video game franchises in order to appeal to mainstream audiences, which is why a lot of their video-game movies end up being a disappointment to both the mainstream audience and the avid fans.
We'll say it again: we want to see the movie done right.
This is a film made for us, the real Minecraft gamers. We don't expect non-players to get it.
Because we're not trying to recoup a hundred million dollar budget, we don't need the support of the masses. Or the studios.
We just need you.
The Minecraft feature film is in your hands. Collectively, you will help imagine, shape and create the first original Minecraft feature film!
What?! Have you been living under a rock for the last few years? Originally released in 2009, Minecraft has become one of the best-selling games of all time, selling over 33 million copies worldwide.
It's one of the most incredible and innovative games ever, and we forbid you to continue reading this page until you've downloaded the game and put in a good, few hours playing one of the best games ever created. So go and do that now, and we'll see you once you've caught up to the rest of us.
First and foremost, you'll get to see an incredible movie about one of our favorite games done right! It will be released for FREE on youtube.com/BrandonJLa!
Beyond that, we have tons of rewards for our backers, including the option to see your own Minecraft creations in the film, gain access to exclusive film-based merchandise and collectibles, and maybe even spend a semester with us while getting the best film education - real experience on a cutting-edge set!
We also have some epic stretch goals in mind, and - more importantly - as we hit them, each and every reward will increase in size!
This means that the more goals we hit, the more rewards you receive regardless of which level you join us!
You can show your support for the creation of this film for just $10, and every single cent we get will go into making not just a good movie... But an epic film!
So please read through the rewards and pick the one that you feel is the right fit for you.
Risks and challenges
With this movie, I intend to fully employ my take on how a movie should be made by utilizing current technology. This requires a reinvention of the filmmaking process. We've been demonstrating and refining this method of low-budget, high-impact filmmaking for years in the form of our YouTube shorts, but this will be the first time we've truly attempted it at this scale. The crew will be minimal, the camera and gear will be light and minimal, and the effects will be done on PC's, not super-computers. Everything will be the opposite of Hollywood, except for the resulting product.
This will surely be the greatest challenge that my team and I have ever faced, but it's what we've been preparing for ever since we decided that we want to make movies. I can't wait for you guys to share in this journey with us as we move forward in a communal effort to make this a reality.
