This particular project has become very dear to my heart. Somehow, it just seemed to evolve as I attended workshops provided by East End Arts for the last 6 months in preparation for this jumpstART public arts project in downtown Riverhead, NY.
You see, I tragically lost my oldest son in November 2013. How does one bare the sadness and despair of such a horrible thing? For me it was to turn to my artwork for personal expression and hopefully some sort of healing. The energy and thought I am putting into this mural is full of mixed emotions but also ones we all encounter in……..the cycle of life.
I am using flowers as a metaphor to life itself. A flower starts with a seed, develops roots and grows. It gets fuller and stronger, blossoms to the amazement, joy and pleasure for all to see. Some flowers last longer than others, but there comes a day when it may start to wither, a time, though sometimes unexpected, that it dies. I want to always remember the beauty and simple joys that a flower, a life, has brought to me. My "Language of Flowers" window mural is an expression of the feelings encountered through out the cycle of life.
In much the same way, I would also like to see downtown Riverhead blossom again. It is of particular interest for me to help in the beautification of our small, once thriving Long Island towns. I believe my murals can do just that; bring life to the streets of downtown Riverhead..
Risks and challenges
I have been painting window murals off and on as a freelance artist for many, many years. My biggest challenge is the weather. A rainy day is a total wash out. So, I am giving myself at least 2 weeks to complete the project. But if for any reason I have not completed painting to my expectations, I will continue until I am satisfied and know I have done my best. That's just the way I am.
