Atticus Drake has been an ongoing project of mine for the last few summers. It began when my interest in history crossed with my love of art, and more specifically, comics.
When studying history at the university level, I kept coming face to face with the question of who's side of history are we writing? How did the other actors in history experience events? How could the 'bad guys' in history think they were doing what was right? And even, how did the 'good guys' cope with the horrific nature of war? These questions were front and centre in my mind as I created this comic, and I hope as you read it, you too will think through some of these questions.
Atticus Drake is a two-issue story, both of which are 26 pages in length. Issue #1 is totally done, as I have already printed a small run to sell to family, friends, and a few local shows. Issue #2 is well under way, and I hope to be done in November.
I have various levels of rewards, each named after a different vehicle used by the allies during the D-Day invasions. These include digital copies, print copies, prints (one numbered to just 25!), original sketches, drawings, personalized art, and even appearances in issue #2! Ever wanted to be in a comic? Here is your chance! To sweeten the deal, everyone who purchases a physical comic will have their name printed on a special 'Thank you' page in issue #2!
I am so excited to be able to present Atticus Drake to you all, and I look forward to when issue #2 can be released! I have loved creating these books, and I feel that issue #2 is the perfect second half to what I believe to be a powerful story.
Risks and challenges
As far as risks go, I believe they are minimal. Having printed issue #1 in a small run already, I have a company lined up to print issue #2, and have learned from previous mistakes to make a more streamlined process.
Issue #1, as mentioned, is done - that means it will be ready to ship whenever issue #2 is done.
Issue #2 is currently about 40% done - at the point of writing this, I have 9 pages totally done, and the rest pencilled (except for cameos and thank you image). I do not anticipate too many delays in finishing the project, except for the inevitability of 'life' occasionally getting in the way and reducing the hours I am available to work on the comic. That being said, I will do my absolute best to get Atticus Drake #2 finished as soon as possible, and hopefully sent out to all of you in November.
