In a two player game, each player's heroes battle each other. In this mode, players take turns activating their heroes in an attempt to defeat each other's parties. When only one player has undefeated heroes, they win.
In addition to their printed abilities, heroes can move, rest to heal damage, block attacks, draw extra cards, perform feats, and charge far away enemies.
Because monsters gain the abilities of those that were defeated before them, fighting a dragon as the first monster of a game will be much easier than facing it as the fourth monster. Skull abilities were designed to stack in interesting ways that change how monsters act and which strategies work best against them. Fighting even the same four monsters in a different order will feel like a totally new game.
With 40 different monsters and eight monster kings, every game is interesting and challenging.
Want to see the game in action? I put together a video illustrating how the solo game works and explain the game concepts and mechanics as I play. I picked relatively straightforward heroes and enemies for this video. With 40 heroes and monsters (thanks to stretch goals), there's a huge variety of abilities in the game, allowing for game play that can be very dynamic.
After the video, try the game yourself. The print and play is available here.
These are the cards used in the video, shown here so you can read them more clearly.
The $30 pledge includes all of the above. In addition, I'll work with you to create a custom card. You can make a hero, monster, or monster king.
Tell me your idea and I'll design the abilities to make it a fun card that you'll be excited to play. I'll send four copies of your card along with the game.
Want more than one custom card? Additional cards are just $5 each. Simply add $5 for each additional card you want.
The $50 deluxe pledge also includes each other custom card made by the backers of that pledge.
***Several backers have emailed to ask me if they can make one of each type of hero. Absolutely. Just add $15 to either of the pledges that come with a card. You can also create monsters and monster kings. You can make your own custom battle with four heroes, four monsters, and a monster king!
A lot of time and care went into creating a fun game that you can play over and over again and enjoy, but the best parts of To the Death! will come from you. Backer-created cards are the things I'm most excited about for this project. Adding your ideas to the game will improve it in ways I can't yet imagine. I can't wait to get started designing and creating your cards.
The $20 pledge includes everything pictured above:
- 32 Heroes
- 32 Monster cards
- 8 Monster king cards
- 16 Hero damage trackers
- 4 Monster damage cards
- 32 Arsenal cards
- 2 Near/Far position cards
- 2 Ability reference cards
- 4 Ability reminder cards
- 4 Enemy damage cards

Last year I successfully funded a solitaire card game called Puzzle Dungeon. Within six months I created nearly 200 custom cards for the game and shipped it to backers on time. Since then, several reviews have been written or posted to YouTube, all overwhelmingly positive. You can view the Kickstarter page here and you can visit my Etsy store here if you're interested in purchasing Puzzle Dungeon.
These are just a few comments about the game. Links to each review follows.
M. S. Edwards said: "I freaking LOVE this game for its simplicity and cleverness!" Review
Green Akers Games said: " The insane replayability created due to so many heroes included in the game is one of the main selling points for me along with its small size which makes it an awesome traveling game. You will not play the same game with the almost endless combinations. " Review
Unfiltered Gamer said: "This is probably one of my favorite solo games that I've played in a long time." Review
You can find more reviews and comments on the Puzzle Dungeon board game geek page.
I've been creating games as a hobby since 2006. I've designed several dozen card games to play with friends. Kickstarter allows me to get my art and games directly to the people who are most interested in them. Through projects like this one, I've been able to connect with people who love the things that I make, which has been an amazing experience.
Risks and challenges
This is my 21st project. This game has the same components as my previous game and will be produced by the same companies. I've worked with them several times and know how to best get this game into your hands in the stated time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
