I am raising funds to be able to successfully film and bring to the market, my puppy massage DVD.
I have been an Animal Physiotherapist for nearly 10 years. Before that I was a veterinary nurse for 4 years. In my time working with dogs and cats, I have seen how important a calm, loving approach is. I see what happens if they are not handled enough, or correctly, and also what happens with the owners when they lack confidence in touching their new little bundle of joy. This is really common. Even if you don't have a puppy, maybe you might remember holding your own baby for the first time (or someone else's). It can be pretty scary in amongst the feeling of pure joy and love.
People have enjoyed massage forever, and many people take their babies to baby massage class, for all the benefits that offers. I want to bring this same concept to the animal world. I want owners to be able to learn confident, safe massage on their puppies. They can then use this for the rest of their lives. So it's great for any age. Learning it in the comfort of their own home with a DVD means they can take their time learning, and create the ideal relaxing environment for puppy and owner. Puppies spend at least the first 2 months in a different home with their own mother, which is absolutely essential, but we miss this bonding time. This way we can make back the lost time.
The benefits of massage are well known. This DVD is good for the whole family to use and is designed to:
- Teach how to create a relaxing environment at home
- Show excellent relaxing massage techniques
- Increase circulation, which helps more valuable nutrition which is carried in the blood, get to all the areas its needed for a growing or healing body
- Get the puppy used to being handled all over its body which reduces stress during a veterinary examination so the vet will be highly impressed
- Increase a trusting and loving bond
- Help move any toxins after exercise
- Encourages the release of hormones that make you feel happy
As a fully qualified and registered animal physiotherapist and veterinary nurse I am well qualified to teach this lesson. During my career I have lectured to many veterinary professionals and owners. This includes for very high establishments such as the British Veterinary Nursing congress and Improve International, which is an education facility the provides post qualification education to veterinary professionals world wide.
I decided to film a DVD over writing a book as I feel strongly that it is easier to learn when you can see a whole action rather than just one picture and a written description. It makes this more accessible for more people. I am also well versed with working in front of a camera as I have now appeared on ITV daybreak, Alan Titchmarsh, and also Channel 4 Sunday brunch. I did an interview on BBC London radio. This all came through my work with the Pet Spa At Harrods in London. Here I worked entirely openly on display. This was, quite literally when I worked in the window display. There I delivered physiotherapy and luxury massage treatments.
The plan for the DVD is set. We plan to get a local puppy to show the massage on. Care will be taken over ensuring the puppy is totally happy for the whole of the filming period, so short filming sessions will be needed. We aim to do this in an outdoor location as this will be more tranquil. The film will then be edited by Adrian Hamilton, who also filmed and edited my company video that I used to apply for the Barclay's business awards, that we were short listed for the top ten of! I hope to have the film premier in a unique location and make this a dog friendly event.
I am pleased to say that T.V. Vet Paul Manktelow MRCVS, founder of Vital Pet Health is also supporting this project!

I have had a long career with animals and I now want to share some of my knowledge to the greater masses of dog owners. Please help me do it!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge is working with animals! As the old saying goes!
I am highly experienced in this area and so fully expect to need many methods to keep control and maintain a happy puppy.
Puppies grow so very quickly so we will have to get one close to filming time. We intend to do this via a newspaper advertorial and let people apply and see who wants to be a puppy super star, and which puppy is really happy and comfortable at being filmed and massaged.
We hope to film outside so UK weather is also an issue, but we will just have to adapt as we all do in the UK anyway.
I am running this alongside my current business, but this wont be an issue as we will keep filming to weekends. Its highly likely this will suit the puppy owners too.
I have many contacts so there is a large list of contingency options as needed, but its impossible to totally predict what may be difficult. But I have an open mind so I am ready for anything.
I am very excited about this project, as is the whole team. So we will get over any obstacles.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
