Welcome to the first large scale typewriter restoration project in decades (perhaps generations!)
We are excited to start this journey with you to bring more than 50 typewriters back to life. With your help, we can purchase the typewriters and supplies needed to bring these machines back to full functionality and allow them to be used for many more years.
The most wonderful thing about typewriters is that, although they are a finite resource, they were manufactured with high quality materials and acute precision allowing us, decades later, to restore machines back to their original glory.
With this project we hope to raise money to take our restoration to the next level. We have been successful on a smaller scale in repainting typewriters with long lasting, scratch and tarnish proof methods similar to their original manufacturing process. Now, we hope to continue that success on a much larger scale.
We source typewriters from around the county to find the best candidates and use our extensive backup stock parts to complete all mechanical repairs. Next, we disassemble the typewriter and repaint in historically accurate colors. Like this Royal Quiet DeLuxe, created in 1950 and restored to its vibrant glossy bubble gum pink:
We believe in restoring typewriters as close to their original condition as possible. But our typewriters are not for sitting and collecting dust! We believe that typewriters are best when they are used and enjoyed. Over the last several years millions of people have "rediscovered " typewriters as the ultimate writing tool. Thousands have used our typewriters to create art, poetry, and as inspiration for design.
Typewriters are our passion and inspiration. Each model is a representative of the style of their time. Ranging from the small, lightweight, and super portable Corona 3 used in the trenches of the Great War to the ultra modern 1969 Olivetti Valentine, typewriters were functional pieces of art in their own right.
With your help we hope to continue to Celebrate the art of typewriters. Rewards for supporters range from: a high gloss post card and a set of folding card featuring of our most popular typewriter photos, to newly restored typewriters.
Our final product will be a batch of newly painted typewriters with scratch/ tarnish proof finishes. Unlike other "refinished" typewriters available online, we do not spray paint or use acrylic based paints to recover our machines. We strip the paint entirely from the machine and apply a permanent new covering similar to the orginal manufacturing process.
We estimate the delivery time to be early December for these rewards, just in time for the holidays.
Thank you for joining us in this journey! We hope you'll share with us your own typewriter journey soon!
Risks and challenges
The best thing about typewriters and probably the most challening is that each one is unique. Conditions and functionaity varies greatly from machine to machine depending on the condition they were kept in since their last use (in most cases it has been decades since they were last used). The imact of this on our project means that some typewriters may take longer than others to restore. However, we have been lucky to have some great mentors who have been working with typewriters for 70+ years and are capable of fixing just about anything!
Secondly, while the repainted typewriters we have planned will have near factory conditions, the typewriters in the "Join our Journey" Reward bracket will not be repainted. This will mean some variation in the paint color, condition and wear. However, machines in our project will be selected for cosemetic condition and variation from machine to machine should be slight.
Luckily, we have years of experince eagerly approaching the new challenges each typewriter brings and are excited to get started! We look forward to having you with us!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
