We grew up on bowls of cinnamon toast crunch, with a gaming console and CRT television in front of us. We still play my games like this and would love for others to enjoy this experience on more platforms. Mac, Linux, PS4, and Nintendo Switch are stretch goals we hope to reach as it takes time and resources to port them over correctly.
A few months before starting this game, I had been laid off from my industry gig. I moved out of my apartment into a room in an unfinished basement and I thought to myself "What do I do now"? I could get another gig, but why and what guarantee's my security there? It was that moment when God mentioned to me that I should develop a game with "purpose" that is edifying for the mind, body, and soul. A game that will inspire people like me to have hope when all odds are against them. My question to God was: How am I going to start a game company with only $200 to my name? My family is nowhere near wealthy, I have no type of inheritance, house I could sell or anything. God then advised me to start working on it and have faith that He would provide what was needed. So I did just that. I've been introduced to my teammates, granted with teaching gigs, and blessed with grant money up to about $10K to get the game to the point where it is now.
It took over 2 years to get the game to this point because I have been limited financially to finish it. I do not want to go to a publisher because I know a publisher will want us to release the game early on to rack in some profit from it. While getting profit is nice that is not why I am making this game. Money will do nothing for my spirit when I am dead. I believe our game has an impacting vision that I would love for you to experience. In order for this to happen I need to buy time and resources
We need your help in generating funds for this game to buy time for our team as we have already spent countless hours of free time working on this project. We have already made sacrifices while living on the bare minimum, but we do have living costs and can't starve while developing this game. We also need funds for operational costs as well as other important things needed to develop a video game. We believe in power in numbers and that this project can expand with no limitation through the gaming community itself.
Our studio is apart of The Maker Innovation Lab Lawrence which is a MakerSpace combining many disciplines for the ultimate collaboration. Developing our game within this community, we manage the game development/motion capture space in which The MILL is currently seeking equipment that will be available to businesses and anyone with a vision!
Risks and challenges
While developing the prototype of this game, three of my family members died within the course of less than three months. It was a tough time for me especially being the pallbearer at all three funerals. I didn't expect something like this to happen, but it did and I had no control over it.
On the journey to finishing this game we are sure that there will be plenty of unexpected punches in development and/or life that are going to hit really hard. You can't really plan for these type of punches, but when they did hit we've been able to get up every single time. I mean the game made it this far right?
That being said there are possibilities of delaying our release date. If we are baking a cake for you and the power shuts off ten minutes after putting it in the oven, we are not going to take out that undone cake, slap icing on it, and feed it to you.
Again we DO NOT want to go to a publisher for the capital to finish this game. If we reach the initial funding goal and nothing more, then we will have to resort to additional funding from a publisher or investor to finish. Our game is currently in the prototype phase and $40K would get our game to a fully fleshed out alpha to secure a publisher. If we reach our higher stretch goals, this would enable us to fully develop Cede without any shackles attached like publishers controlling our vision.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
