My name is Darcie Book and I was recently awarded a partial grant to attend a month-long artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont this coming spring. I have some big ideas for the next steps in my painting practice and the residency will provide me with the perfect opportunity to devote four consecutive weeks to making my ideas become reality.
I graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2004 and I currently live and work in Baltimore, MD. For more information about my work please visit my website, which includes my CV, artist statement, and more images of my artwork.
ABOUT THE VERMONT STUDIO CENTER
The Vermont Studio Center is the largest international artist residency program in the U.S., hosting around 50 artists and writers each month. It offers artists from around the world the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas. Studio space, room, and board are all included in the residency's tuition cost. This allows artists the chance to focus exclusively on studio work.
My time at the artist residency will impact my art practice for years to come and will give me the chance to establish long-lasting connections with other talented artists.
WHERE YOU COME IN
I am so excited about the possibility of attending the residency, but the financial commitment to make it happen is currently beyond my means. Though I received an artist's grant and a work exchange award from the Vermont Studio Center, the remaining tuition fees are $2,500 (considerably lower than the full tuition amount of $3,950). When I factor in additional expenses, I'll still need nearly $4,000 to make my trip to Vermont possible.
That's where you come in. In exchange for awesome rewards, you can help make this great opportunity a reality.
- $2,500 due for remaining residency fees after the grant and work exchange I was awarded from Vermont Studio Center
- $600 for round trip transportation between Vermont and Maryland
- $500 for many gallons of paint, painting surfaces, and other art supplies
- $100 shipping supplies and completed artwork to and from Vermont
$200 (approximation) for Amazon and Kickstarter fees
- TOTALING $3,900
You may have noticed that my Kickstarter goal doesn't cover the entirety of my costs. But if you help me reach my $2,200 goal, I'll just barely be able to save the remaining amount needed in time for the residency. It would, of course, greatly improve the quality of my life in the upcoming months if I exceed this goal and could cover all residency costs as a result of this Kickstarter project.
Each sponsor will be provided with a reward for helping me achieve my goal. Below is a listing of rewards that I am offering to those who will help my campaign. Please note that this is a unique opportunity to purchase original artwork from me at prices far below gallery retail.
Note that all rewards with a delivery date of December 2014 will be delivered in time for the holidays. If you live in Baltimore, original paintings can also be in your hands in time to give as holiday gifts. Just send me a message for details.
One last thing - If you help me to exceed my goal by $1,000 (totaling $3,200), I'll send every single person who backed my project an original daily drawing to be completed early next year. This bonus drawing will be yours no matter what amount you pledged, and I'll cover the shipping fees at no additional cost to you.
Every single dollar pledged gets me closer to my goal. You will forever have my gratitude for helping make this trip to the Vermont Studio Center possible.
I will send you a personalized, handmade postcard from the residency in Johnson, VT expressing my appreciation for your help.
A one-of-a kind drawing from my daily drawing project completed while I'm at the Vermont Studio Center. The daily drawing project is something I've been working on intermittently since I was 15 years old (for the past 17 years). I devote spans of time - sometimes several years or just a month - to creating one drawing each consecutive day. If you select this reward, you'll own a daily drawing marking my time spent at the artist residency. These drawings will be of especially high quality because I'll have the mental space and time to focus on creating them! Most of these drawings will be about 4" - 6" square.
If you want to purchase several drawings - a week's worth or a series of 3 to frame together - just edit your pledge amount during checkout. The images below provide examples of previously completed daily drawings. The drawing(s) you receive could be an abstract ink mini-painting, a figure study, plans for an upcoming project, or another fun surprise! To see additional examples and larger images, check out the daily drawings on my website.
